1st jig is "Seanamach Tubestation" written by John Carthy - great version on Cathal Hayden's solo album Not sure of the 2nd 3rd is "Feed the Ducks" written by Cork banjo player Kieran Leahy - on Liz Doherty's album Last Orders
I keep asking people to identify the instrument by sound. no one has gotten it yet. It's amazing what the style of music will do to the sound of the instrument.
Tenor banjo and Mandolin tuning are the same in Irish music though some like to tune up their G string to A. here hes just tuned all the strings a semitone sharper...
Cillian, could you please tell me what tuning you are using here? I have just got a tenor banjo and tuned it to mandolin tuning but your tenor sounds like it is higher in tone. Are you using Tenor banjo tuning or mandolin tuning? Thanks in advance.
Great playing cillian and to all the haters you don't win an all Ireland for nothing. And for the crap banjo sound comment Tom cussen banjo his is playing are the best banjos in the world fact
that is the right way to hold the plac. my sister has the same technique and it was his technique that helped him win aswell being a brill player!!!. . .which he obvioulsly is.
I can guarantee u cillian didn’t play like this a few years ago, too busy lad, go back to when u played it sweet please, blunders everywhere lad, too much going on, 😔♥️👍☘️☘️🇮🇪🇮🇪
i think he plays too fast but with no feeling; great player, but needs to play from the heart; just trying to go at wharp speed - listen to Gerry O'Connor or Sully
I dunno bout you but this gets my feet stompin, the second song made me wish I was at a carnival/festival just so I could learn how to dance to it. He can play very good for a minor imo
when you have an all ireland medal then u can talk,, Cillian is a gent of a lad who wouldn't stoop so low as to slander another player, i thought music was all about enjoyment?? obviously not!? haters gonna hate ,
Ye very capable cillian is , but way overplayed ,,too much ornamentations, it’s falling to pieces, like we hear all these banjo players playing mad fast,, even comes across too rushed , and loads of blunders in there too, , anyway, that’s what I feel about it, we all defer to what’s sweet to our ears, but it’s not for me, ,,😔
It's a banjo full stop. Unless they change the name to something else I will call it a banjo. Best of luck to you tryin to change it. I will be keepin eye out on your progress. And no I don't understand logic
Cillian - you will bring JOY to thousands for the rest of your days. Live long and prosper.
That audible 'thunk' you might've heard was the sound of my jaw hitting the floor. All due respect and admiration to Banjo Master Doheny.
your triplets are awesome!!
Unbelievable! Accurate as f****. Such unconventional right hand technique, but still outstanding!!!
Brilliant playing, wow!
You're so good, keep up the great playing, we love you!!!

Tenor banjo and Mandolin tuning are the same in Irish music though some like to tune up their G string to A. here hes just tuned all the strings a semitone sharper...

@@RyanSavage_Banjo He's tuned up about a semitone - and the low string is tuned up to A. So essentially Bb-Eb-Bb-F
County Limericks finest! 🪕
I love the way he rakes the pick across the strings!
Is the last tune a variation of Moving Clouds ??
Nice playing.
legend
Aren't they the same...an octave apart? GDAE
I suppose he plays in the splendid shop of Clareen Banjos !
Unreal 😎

Good for the soul.

What's the tune from 3:10 onwards

Great stuff, what make of Banjo is it?
What make of instrument is it please? Looks very large in the head? Sounds great.
Clareen
Have you got your banjo tuned CDGA for this set?
wish someone could name the tunes on these type of posts.
anyone know the name of the third jig???
Great playing cillian and to all the haters you don't win an all Ireland for nothing. And for the crap banjo sound comment Tom cussen banjo his is playing are the best banjos in the world fact
Any name for the second tune
real great, that is playing banjo
:D I love this :P
outstanding!!!
Can you tell us what banjo that is you are playing? Is it vastly expensive ?
Costs about €100
@@cormac2515 no. Add a 0 onto that number
cool!
There's subliminal message advertising in this... must buy a shed and a hanging basket... (4:20)
How long has the tenor banjo been incorporated into Irish music?
I think you can thank (or blame) Barney McKenna from the Dubliners in the 60s for intruducing it to Irish music
@@Umiale that's when the bouzouki became part of Irish music too.
It was popularised in the 60s but it's been used in Irish sessions since the 20s
@@ricemango7502 if you say so
Whoo those triplets
Is that a Clareen Pearl or Oyster?
+Victor oyster
What are the' tunes) Is Lad playin'
Excellent. Lovin those tight triplets ^.^
That's how easy it is to play the banjo,... I've been sayin it for years😱

a boy cillian said jack
Look at that joe foley mandolin on the wall. I'd be lying if i said i wasn't on a bone looking at it.
The head on that
+Peter Browne Back in the day when I had a touch of ''mouth-open" syndrome during performance.
Feed the ducks.
I can guarantee u cillian didn’t play like this a few years ago, too busy lad, go back to when u played it sweet please, blunders everywhere lad, too much going on, 😔♥️👍☘️☘️🇮🇪🇮🇪
too sharp weres the feeling ?
Iontach maith, maith thú.
Too much like bluegrass for my taste.
i think he plays too fast but with no feeling; great player, but needs to play from the heart; just trying to go at wharp speed - listen to Gerry O'Connor or Sully

Sorry Andrew S, but what you are saying is complete and utter rubbish. The guy's a master and that's that!
That's an unfair comment - he's only a youngster, and absolutely brilliant - my instinct goes with Dessie Kelliher's comment.
Andrew S Troll

keep that poxy f**kin negativity down yer jocks, don’t be spunking on us casual youtube comments ‘a passers-by please :)
🤣🤣🤣
crap tone on that banjo
Most outrageous statement on this video. Would love to know what brands you think have a nice tone
Great playing; I don't really like the tune though
Irish banjo is the worst. A banjo has 5 strings. You wouldn't call an ukulele a Hawaiian guitar, would you?
That's why it's called tenor banjo dumbo
thewren01 Doesn't make it a banjo, anymore than an ukulele is a guitar. Do you understand logic?
It's a banjo full stop. Unless they change the name to something else I will call it a banjo. Best of luck to you tryin to change it. I will be keepin eye out on your progress. And no I don't understand logic
thewren01 enjoy being a moron :)
No. I will enjoy my BANJO
