Yes I tried to think it through as much as possible; but there are always changes along the way.

I love it! when you said "I nearly went with that.... but it didn't fill up the Shed!" Pretty much says it all about how we modelers think :) good looking track plan. I see this is an older video so I will be searching for the others :) Working on my third layout version of the Panther Valley Railroad now and it seems as though the ideas and changes just keep coming as we go :)

Yes, there's always changes. I've made a few 'improvements' to that plan with extra sidings etc. but will stay with the basic idea of it.

That's going to make a nice layout. Ah, some of my favorite track plans are in 101 Track Plans. :) There at the 1:13 point, Plan 10, were I to begin an HO layout again, that would suit my purposes with it split at the 1 foot line inboard of the yard and rearranged in to an L shape for a corner. Works well with yard diagram flipped upside down to put Freight House against wall. A couple years ago I built it in Trainz Railroad simulator and added a run around track at Midvale.

Yes thanks Scott. If I live for another fifty or so years I should be able to do something spectacular with it. ( LOL ) But seriously, that and the other two plans books are a bit of a go to for layout ideas. I actually changed my mind a dozen times before I settled on the one I went with as there were several that fitted most of my parameters. So with a few alterations on the go it's slowly but surely coming together. Cheers

@@jimstrainsandstuff9539 The fragment of a layout I have at home is from 101, I'm using a slightly modified Plan 55, Belfast and Moosehead Lake. So far only the Belfast end exists: and it is located somewhat further south than the real RR in Maine the plan based on, south enough to have palm trees! My health is a bit of a mess and I've been (until recently) putting what energy was available in to a several modules for layout for a local club which started about a decade ago.

I have worn out my copies of Track Planning for Realistic Operation and 101 Track Plans. My current layout, under construction (15x33') I designed using 11x17' graph paper following John Armstrong's book to have minimum 32" radius and single track mainline with two 21' long passing sidings and an 11 track staging yard with 34" radius helix.

Wow, that sounds very impressive. Certainly big enough to keep you occupied for quite a while. Happy modelling!

Hi Jim, so from approximately 4:25 to 4:40 as you go through the layout, I was curious what size spacing of a board is needed to complete that layout? I like the fact it's not a large space overly huge layout. Unless I'm wrong that is the kind of layout that could go onto a rectangle board is isn't going to take up a huge amount of space. I'm often puzzled with a lot of modellers who have small space yet instead of running rectangle size boards to build on, try to take out the middle of cut the boards into various shapes and size and don't maximize the table layout. From this layout i think you can add a drop down shelf for controls and wiring and then once the layout is in place just go under the table and drill/cut out holes as needed.

( I had to go back and view the part you were referring to!!! LOL ) That's the plan I adapted ( adopted ) for my layout and it worked out to be about 8 feet by 17 feet. All bar one of the modules are rectangular. I see your point about cutting holes afterwards for middle access; in hindsight it would have been a very sensible thing to do. i just crawl under a couple of parts for operating pit access. And the control panel IS due for a rebuild into a smaller format. Thanks for the comments.

      Also; the modules are mostly 4 x 3 ft ( 1200 x 900mm )

Very cool track plan! So how much of it did you change?

As you would know, on paper never seems to quite fit in practice, but I made it into a double main and altered the yard leads to suit. Since then I've changed a few things as I went along to make for more interesting running.

Well, silverfish and baby garden snails nibble away at certain types of paper over time and the books end up like that.

How can you tell a model railway enthusiast? It isn’t the shed full of model railway paraphernalia, it isn’t the shelves full of model railway technical book, it isn’t even the fully kitted out model railway setup.
It’s the odd model railway track used as a book mark.
