Wow. For some reason I was looking at google maps and saw that 39 ran all the way from ACH (2) down to Azusa. I thought, maybe they finally rebuilt this great road. I used to live in South Pasadena 34 years ago plus. I remember riding my motorbike up Azusa canyon to ACH and then ACH down to La Canada Flintridge. Off ACH, I also used to hike Switzer Falls with my dog, Strawberry Canyon. etc. Newcomb's Ranch for lunch. What memories and so much natural beauty. I miss San Gabriel Mountains a lot. I now live in mid west Great Lakes area which is also beautiful. Thank you for this wonderful video. What great memories it brought back for me. I remember riding my motorbike all the way from Azusa on 39 to ACH 2. But this would have been in the early to mid 80's. I don't remember the road barriers being there until the mid to late 80's. We were able to get past. Maybe they were open. I don't remember having to go off road. I do remember having to watch for rocks in the road when coming around corners. Was 39 passable all the way to 2 at some time in the 80's? Am I not remembering correctly? I also remember there used to be an off road place for motorized vehicles on the Azusa end.
My next trip out to LA I will make time to go hiking again in the San Gabriel Mountains, like you say, on a cool nice day. With no cars, the peacefulness and serenity you capture in your video is very appealing to me. Thank you for filming this and for sharing it. Truly beautiful.
Is the road to Wilson off ACH Still open? I remember it was tight and twisty and not a full two lanes wide. On a clear day, one could see all the way to Catalina Island if I remember right.
Im so glad you’ve enjoyed my video, the road to Mt Wilson has been reopened since 4 months ago however ACH has been closed from red box to Islip for over a year or so due to the huge mudslides and storms of last year. I was a kid who grew up in the 1950s in Whittier, Ca. Hwy. 39 was the magic highway. When we'd get in the car to 39 it meant if we went left we were going to the mountains and if we went right we were going to Huntington Beach. When I got a little older is was always fun to ride bikes to the beach and back. It was an all day adventure and we'd always stop at Knott's and get an ear of corn on a stick dipped in butter for 25 cents.

I hike this closed section at least once a month and it is extremely surreal how lonely it gets. You would assume it would be a very popular "hiking" trail but there is nobody except you for 4 miles at any given time. I've encountered only one person in the past 3 month, but I've seen boot footprints on the snow (probably from earlier in the day or the day before). I guess the constant rock slides are why people don't come. I'm glad your hike was safe, rock slides are extremely common on this stretch of freeway.

This road remains "temporarily closed". If it is permanently abandoned, Caltrans must restore the area to its natural state, which would likely cost more than repairing the road. However they do minimal maintenance so it can be used by some emergency vehicles.

Weekdays are good for going up there, my preferred time, stay clear of East fork in Summer time (especially Hot).

I remember hiking that a long time ago, maybe 1985. At the time, huge boulders were blocking the road near the northern end, at Highway 2. My understanding is that they cleared out the rocks to allow firefighters to get at the 2020 Bobcat fire. Before that, you couldn't get a motorized vehicle down it. Now it is barely drivable but it isn't up to standard for civilian traffic. I suppose it would be a good bicycle trip.

This is one of my favorite areas of SoCal. Before I escaped Commiefornia for good, I camped in several places in the San Gabriels during my visits to SC, and Crystal Lake became my favorite spot. One day, I took my bike to the closed section of 39, hoping to ride all the way to the ACH. My legs were out of shape, I think I went only 1 mile. Great scenery!
It's going to be difficult to rebuild this road. To design it so that rockslides don't harm road or people, so the bighorn sheep aren't affected, and find the money to pay for it, is nearly too much. CA can take care of the money problem by shutting down the high speed rail project that everyone is against, and reallocate those funds to fixing the northernmost 4.4 miles of Hwy 39.

I lived at the 39 and PCH in HB and I would drive from there all the way up to the top, usually to go fishing and camping at Crystal Lake. Of course the East and West fork was great for fishing and camping. Great place to relax and get away. Hope to get back soon.
