As a once wooden boat owner I am fascinated by the worlds different ethnic peoples on how they crafted their ships so many years ago and even today. Many similarities between various ethnic groups. Amazing engineering and skill that is necessary to build these magnificent ships! I'm honored to see this!
Back in the 1950s a Viking Ship rebuild came up the river Themes, U. K. The crew in old Viking dress, They said they had come too invaid Britain, So a groop ove University students set out in a rowboat with dust bin lids for shields and floor mopes for weapons, And threw tomatoes at them, Or to them, There was a stand off, And the Vikings said they would come back. There were offers from France to assist the Vikings. It was more fun than the football finals.
@Fran Ra You don't know the damndest thing of what my ancestors did. All you get your information from is deluded Christian monks from an age long gone. They are to be revered for their courage in battle, their amazing boat-building and much, much more.

Its fascinating how these peoples were seen at many points in history as brutal raiders, not so long ago.. and now are they the one of the most respected, peaceful and civilized neighbors a nation could wish.
I love these ships, so elegant and efficient. We have been to Roskilde/Denmark last year on our bicycle tour to visit the ship museum and the museum harbour, where new viking ships are recreated.
thank you for posting this Brilliant video i never realized till now the amount of skill time n the enormous cost it takes to build a beautiful replica of a Viking ship Great to know these rare skills still exist and are kept alive
You could use many words for hoisting the sail, but easy or easily does not spring immediately to mind. But then again I didn’t take into account the fact that your vikings .Beautifully made boat, how they made such things in the day is mind blowing.
FYI: Viking ships spent a whole lot of time in rivers so each was built accordingly. A deeper draft for deeper rivers and a bit shallower draft for shallower rivers.
Some did. In the Roskilde Ship Museum we have a large "Knar", which was used for trade and transport, also sailing to Iceland and Greenland. We also have several types of warships and maybe ferries?
Just reading "The age of theVikings" par prof. Anders Winroth and watching this is just the perfect side dish. The book is as much interesting as this ship is well built.
jjajajajajajajajaaa ..now they are 31 dislikes english , they were customers of the Vikings ... they must miss the sound of the horn , and their friendly visits .. jajajajajajaaaa
They didnt built it using old methods. They used powertools and other modern tools. If you want to see true replicas, you have to go to Roskilde, where they have build an even longer ships, entirely by old norse methods.
The Dane is correct, but Roskilde is not the only longship in Scandinavia built using old methods. There’s three or four in total. One of them is docked in Tønsberg in Norway, an original-tool replica of the Oseberg ship. I know because they tried to hire me back when I worked next city over.
If you lot hadn't come up the river Slaney on regular raiding excursions I would not be here. We even kept the locals name for us when we decided to stay. Excellent and beautiful looking boat. I hope you get good use from her.
Wonderful! I have been able to trace my ancestry back to the Highlands of Scotlands, the Lord of the Isles (Somerled), and through him to Norse Jarls & kings of Mann, Northumbria, & Norway; including Harald Fairhair (my 31st great-grandfather). I would love to sail on it! Thank you for sharing this.
How about all the Mayan and Inca invasions of other empires. They were much more brutal to. Why should whites feel bad over our ancestors, double standards thats why. Yous are jealous of our great success and want to destroy it and justify it anyway yous can, but its comes out of jealousy.

The ancient ancestors would be proud of this re creation long ship build and I suspect Odin Thor Frey freyja would be too , hail the gods , it just goes to show the hard work and skill needed to create a large fleet of these ships to sail to new lands , and for one to go down in a storm must of been heartbreaking for the builders when you see the work carried out to build just one .
Is it based on a original ship ? Like the Seastallion Of Glendalough (Roskilde, Skuldelev 2). Just asking, because the danish ship, similar in size is based on one of those they found in Roskilde Fjord.
Ingemar Oskar true . i am always amazed by the shape it is so wonderful . it is so ahead of its time . these ships must have scared the hell out of anybody they raided . no one would have seen anything that advanced .

I've read accounts of masts being lowered when the longships went inland because of trees hanging over some portions of river. How the hell would they do that with such a ship as the Dragon Harald?
mead from lindisfarne . a great idea considering the connection. they tested the DNA of people who have a history of living in the north east coast of England. 95% of them have viking DNA . it proves Vikings where way more than a smash and grab raiding party . they had way more to offer the world than just that . very advanced and intelligent people . takes way more than a raider to build a ship like that . navigation alone sets them miles ahead .
Does anyone know when the ship is coming to Liverpool. I've been waiting for years now, and I don't want to miss it. It was planned for 2013 but was delayed so they could test it.
