Standing Outdoor Crucifix - Construction & Installation

Heritage Restoration and Design Studio was contracted to manufacture a custom outdoor crucifix for a local church. The cross beams were composed of rough cedar boards, which were cut to the appropriate size using an old world carving technique known as dadoing.
After the beams were fitted together, the cross was treated and finished to withstand the outdoor environment. A fifty inch resin corpus was given seven layers of Heritage’s outdoor statuary copper coating.
Once the components completed their drying time, the cross and corpus were shipped to the client’s church. A special thanks to Wilson Lawn Service, who dug the hole at the installation site, and provided landscaping to the surrounding area. The cross was inserted into the hole and cemented in place.
The corpus was attached to the cross along with a custom carved INRI sign that contained the traditional biblical inscription in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
The crucifix was now fully installed. It stands outside its church to remind viewers of the sanctity of the site for years to come.

It is so beautiful to see a proper Crucifix of our Lord and Savior, these days! To see a visual display of Jesus on the cross is a REMINDER that he selflessly died for our Sins so we would have Eternal Life!!!

What's the size of the lumber for the beams?

The lumber for this cross was 6"x4" timbers cut to the lengths of 14' for the vertical beam and 5 ' for the horizontal beam. Part of the vertical shaft was submerged into the ground and fastened with concrete and bolts to keep the cross steady.
