Bill Cook What if you get a second hand 3DS that someone vomited on
I knew it was dead when they said "the switch isn't gonna replace the 3ds". That's their way of confirming the replacement.
The DS isn't a replacement for the Gameboy, it's a third pillar in the company.
Allow me to make an addition: "The Switch isn't gonna replace the Wii U"
@@sukus the switch was meant to replace the Wii U, that was the point. That’s why it released so soon. Nintendo never said it wasn’t going to replace the Wii U.
Although the switch was definitely made To replace the Wii u and 3ds, to be fair the 3ds did still receive support for a few years after switch launched, unlike the Wii u.
To be fair, Nintendo clearly saw that the 3DS still had a chance to perform well, in case the switch didn't do very well they could at least continue supporting the 3DS or at least have it as an entry system, then they saw the switch did well enough and with the low 3ds game sales they must've thought "well ok people clearly are over this system so let's just wrap it up"

Man, I'm gonna miss dual screens. It seemed like such a stupid gimmick at the time, but it was so amazing having a separate screen for extra information like maps and enemy info. Fire Emblem's ease of information access and system efficiency PEAKED with the 3DS games. All of the information you'd ever need about a unit kept on one simple screen for easy access. Meanwhile we have other FE games that feel the need to fill three to four goddamned pages with information. Such a shame.
Yeah, I'm gonna miss the dual screen too. That second screen was so helpful to play Monster Hunter. I wish Switch had something similar.
I loved those too! They created such a good effect with the games and menus
Yeah but it was time, I feel like most devs got everything they wanted out of the dual-screen concept. The 3DS had a good life so it feels like it's the right time to it to bed.
@@thegreygoblin5165 Nah, the best stuff the second screen was used for isn't something you can run out of ideas for. It was a huge convenience feature.

I miss the Streetpass. That was fun a it’s peak and when the Switch came out, I’ve not seen any passes since. Sad the Switch can’t have something similar.
Personally I've had my 2ds since christmas 2017 and even then I still got a ton of Street pass. Then in 2019 its like all the 3ds's just disappeared. The oldest Street pass I've gotten from a stranger was from like a year ago
I went to Japan in October 2019, and it was my big goodbye to Streetpass. I got 10 every day, especially in Akihabara. I sent Streetpass on my console out with a fucking bang, and I'm super happy I did. It's a great feature, and I knew that that would be my last chance to get a Streetpass ever again. I'm so happy I did it.
@@GlobinHD That may be because Nintendo had a feature called Streetpass Relay that they put in a lot of major places like stores. It would take information from the last person with a 3DS to pass by it and give that Streetpass to the next 3DS to pass it. They discontinued that in like late 2018 or early 2019.
Would be cool on switch, for stuff like miis and animal crossing designs... but it'll probably be a subscription if it comes back-

Arlo really just put Kid Icarus: Uprising onscreen while talking about 3DS games that the Switch probably can't emulate.

Yeah, I have it. I got one that provided a stand so that you're other hand can focus on the stylus controls. I understand why they needed that kind of control scheme but it would be a travesty if Kid Icarus doesn't get a Switch title. It fits there.
I mean doesn't the fact that that game comes with a stand pretty much confirm that the current control scheme is crap? Sakurai knew that but of course fixing that wasn't high on his priority list.
@@Tim-007 Once you get the stand, you're fine. And beyond the controls (this game really needed twin-stick), it's fantastic. It looks good for its system, the soundtrack rocks, gameplay is fast and fun, and the writing is that rare kind that you can take seriously yet isn't full of itself (unlike modern final fantasy, yeesh).
The controlls take some getting used to. But after 2 chapters they clicked and I love them since. I found the controlls are amazing. I never used the stand.

This one really hurts to see, and I know I’m a bit late. This was easily their console with the most character in my opinion. It had all these different apps, a camera, home menu music, it was generally a playful console. And what does the switch have? None of that. It’s bland, and has no character, it’s like an Uncarved slate Nintendo never bothered to put any effort into. That’s what makes Nintendo consoles great, is their character and ability to make nostalgic memories. And now that the last Nintendo console that had all of those things is gone, will we ever get a console of that high of tier again? I don’t think so. Nintendo isn’t how it used to be, they’ve became a greedy money making machine. This is just my take on it, but the 3ds will always hold a very special place in my heart, something the switch won’t be able to hold a candle up to. (EDIT: For anyone wondering about this works, because it's really cool: the lower layer is just a normal screen, while the upper layer has pixels that can switch beween black and transparent. When 3D is turned off, all these pixels are completly transparent and you just see the normal screen beneath. When 3D is on, the normal screen shows the left and right images interlaced, and the layer above displays a grating in such a way that the elements of the left image can't be seen from the right and vice versa.)

The death of the 3DS means the death of Nintendo's Dual Screen gaming. That is, until they decide to revive it with a future console, which may be a whole generation away.
Nintendo DS, DSi, 3DS, New 3DS and Wii U games all rely on two screens, one of them being a touchscreen, in order to be played in original form. Many Wii U games have been ported to the Switch, but none without modifications to the core game design that takes the second screen out of the equation.
A straight Virtual Console style port of any DS, DSi, 3DS, New 3DS or Wii U games will be impossible until future hardware applies a second screen and makes it possible once more.
That's what I think about it, how I feel about it, even owning a Switch, the 3DS is still my all-time favorite Nintendo console.
The sheer amount of features it comes with, the cameras, the microphone, the gyro sensors on top of the 3D screen are what outdo the Switch for me. And then the Software it comes bundled with! Miiverse Nintendo Video and Nintendozone when they were still supported, RUclips, Hulu, 3DS Camera, 3DS Sound, Face Raiders, AR Games, Street Pass Mii Plaza! So much to do even if you didn't even Buy a game! And these are games that by design, were only possible on the 3DS hardware because the Switch decidedly didn't bring back any of these features, not even a customizable menu. We're Lucky it still has a Mii Maker. Switch games don't even Use Miis outside of legacy ideas like the Mii Fighters.
In addition to a proper handheld Virtual Console, the 3DS' Library is one that should go down in history as one to strive for.
Every major Nintendo IP had at least one iteration on the console, the ones that had no new games still had the Virtual Console on the New3DS to compensate! For some like Animal Crossing and Kid Icarus, they were the best entries in the franchise thus far, while for others like Paper Mario, Yoshi's Island and Pikmin, their most infamous entries. First Super Smash Bros. on a handheld, that alone earns it major favoritism points for me. And even games that started on Wii U were ported to the 3DS to make up for lost revenue.
The Switch is the Present for all the good and the bad that entails, but if you want a time capsule of the best Nintendo's 6th Generation, it's all found on the 3DS.
The 3DS is the console the Switch needs to beat to become my favorite of all time, but for the reasons I just gave, the odds are stacked against it.

I too have the OG Aqua blue 3ds. I still remember I got it for Christmas when it first came out back when I was 12. I've stopped playing it as the Switch came out but I really got some good memories from that system. I had a group of friends that I would hang with and just chill and have Pokemon battles. After seeing this video I'm surprised such a little console had such a big impact on me growing up. Those were some really good times. I might get a 3ds xl too and keep the little guy going :)
The 3DS and DS systems hold a very special place in my heart. I grew up with these systems. Probably sunk in 1000s of hours into my 3DS and DS. The discontinuation of the 3DS system also lines up with me entering into this big confusing scary adult word. I usually don't get emotional like at all, but this is one of the times that I did.
My eyes needed the break.
Love the games hate how bad the screen was.
I'd buy a bunch of the games though. More collections need to happen
bad in 2020? yeah. Bad in 2006? hell no, thing was fucking amazing and the games are so good it's worth putting up with the screen even now
@@stevecosmolove1045 ...The 3DS came out in 2011 though and used a different resolution than the original DS, that's why there's a pixel perfect mode for DS games by holding down select at start up and otherwise, they're blown up to the 3DS resolution.
...Uh, but nowadays, mod the 3DS, dump your games and use Citra on PC to play in a better resolution.

3ds after nintendo announced discontinuation: "well switch, you have to take up the mantle now.. I know you will make me and your ancestors proud.. especially where wiiu failed us."
Switch: "I will do my best 3ds."
Then a ghostly image of the gameboy shows up and a stairway to Nintendo system heaven appears. Gameboy: "come my child, it is time" both the 3ds and the gameboy leave and all that's left is the switch.

Man, I really wish I was able to get a 3DS again. I thought how much I missed my 3DS would subside a little once I got my Switch, but if anything it makes me miss it more. Switch has good games, but the console itself feels so... soulless, compared to the 3DS. I miss my menu music, the catchy eShop tunes, the activity log, Face Raiders, the camera and sound applications. I miss 'em.
Exactly, the 3DS had such a strong identity. And its form factor really sets it apart as the ultimate portable console. Switch Lite and PS Vita are too big and their control sticks will just snag in your pocket. Nintendo is abandoning this space for which there is no replacement. Wouldn't it be great and hilarious if SEGA swooped in and made a SEGA DS? It would be a perfect home to revive several of their beloved retro franchises to.
@@metaldiceman I think Nintendo would sue SEGA if they made they're own DS...
@@SabirTheHuman Obviously they would call it something else, and design it differently. I just mean a purely portable system, if SEGA did that they would have the corner on the market since Nintendo has backed out. And with that they'd be in a position to bring back their status as a hardware and game company in a big way.
Those are exactly my thoughts.
@@metaldiceman Nintendo make a case that covers the sticks to make it easied to slife things in and out
this is so sad. I had so much fun with the 3ds, it’s has so many good games and the fact it was able to absolutely destroy the psvita in sales, which was stronger and had better features than the 3ds, I had so many great memories with this console, rest easy 3ds, you did good.

The ps vita was the Wii u for Sony the ps4 just helped them make it through that kinda like the 3ds did for wii u

So basically I recommend both Tomodachi Life and Miitopia, for the people who are a fan of the mii game series. I don’t know if we’ll ever get ports of those games on the switch, so you should play them on the 3D or 2ds if you can.
Also the streetpass games were pretty fun, back when people carried around their 3ds anyways...
Leo Lanteigne I always carry my 3ds with me just in case
I'd love to see a Tomodachi Life port on the Switch, I loved that game so much

I predict that the switch pro will be called: "switch new" just because that's how nintendo seem to do things
tms meister realistically it would be called the switch xl
Ima head out tf..
New made it stand out in Japan, but just made it confusing everywhere else.
Much like the Switch Lite being unable to switch...
The Switch XL will be a home console ONLY with no handheld functionality.

Arlo: “The 3DS ran so the Switch could run super a lot super duper just a lot really fast. Also very fast.”

typo "ran"
I really hope that someday Nintendo makes a system far in the future that can play games from all four of their handheld systems. It wouldn't even be that difficult, since you would basically just need a 3DS and a gba in one system.
I’ve had an XL for ages and it’s still going strong - 10/10 recommend
This feels like such the end of an era.
I remember getting my original 3DS so I could play Ocarina of Time 3D (a very good budget title on selects), thinking the 3D was a bit janky back then and not using it much, then getting more and more games. I since upgraded twice, getting a 3DSXL when the special edition came out for Pokemon X&Y, and then again when Xenoblade Chronicles was ported to the New 3DS, which I still have today.
The amount of hours I packed onto those three consoles combined over a 9 year period is just about astronomical to me. From not just the games mentioned above but Pokemon X, Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, Super Smash Bros., Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask 3D, Animal Crossing New Leaf, Legend of Zelda A Link Between Worlds, Kingdom Hearts 3D, and what I consider to be my favorite on the 3DS, Pokemon Moon. Just really shows off the incredible games in the library and that's just a small slice!
The 3DS was a truly great console and I'll miss a lot of the innovation that came with it's games and cherish the memories of the games I played on it
Reggie has moved on too new horizons :(
I'm glad I decided to softmod my 3DS right before they announced the discontinuation. It made it more personal for me knowing I'll likely still be using mine for years to come.
Alex Scheidly I’m in the exact same situation. I got an old 3ds and modded it about two weeks ago.
Im not sure if I should buy Kid Icarus: Uprising or just save my money and finish the playthrough that i was almost done watching.
It's a great game and worth a try 😁The only downside are the forced uncomfortable controls that you need to hold for the most part.
Buy it!!
@@FutureRetroRoots Thats good, but having already seen most of the game isnt going to ruin it for me? Oh and sorry if my comment was confusing, I meant a playthrough like a series of videos.
@SNES Nes Nice, thanks for the reply
Another vote to go for it. The controls aren't actually that bad. I just don't reccommend playing for more than an hour or two at a time. It's super fun, the music is excellent, and there's a lot of replay value in all the secrets that are scattered about. Do it, play it for yourself.
I have a 3ds xl but since the 3ds was one of my favorite consoles of all time I want to get the "new" 3ds xl since the 3ds is getting discontinued and so I can have an extra. I want to buy a "new" 3ds xl but I am apprehensive about buying a used one because I don't like used handhelds since they can really be beat up over time. I'm trying to find a brand new one for retail but I can't find it all since they are so scarce now and people are charging ridiculous prices for them. Do u guys have any recommendations on how to get a the 3ds line for retail now that it's discontinued?
So long, old friend. Thanks for the memories.
I guess the Mario and Luigi series will be coming to switch now; assuming Nintendo hires a new company to make them.
Last time I was this early, the 3ds was still being manufactured.
Doesn’t the 3DS actually technically have 3 screens? One lower one, then two in the upper portion to create the 3D effect with the slider?
Its one screen on top with a parallax filter
Predictable Enigma Exactly. The 3DS and n3DS have a top screen of 800x240 pixels, while the 2DS and n2DS have a 400x240 screen instead.
As someone who has dabbled a little in developing Homebrew for the 3DS, internally it has 3 screens. The 3D effect is just the top screen the 2 top screens in such a way that one image goes to one eye, and the other screen to another eye.
The 2DS technically has this as well, there is memory reserved for the 3 screens in the video ram. The 3rd screen is just never displayed, as the 3D is not available
sukus I imagine the memory is reserved in the 2DS for compatibility reasons only. It’s easier to make it work exactly the same as a 3DS, but the physical screen would still be 400x240.
Edit: to answer @sukus a little clearer, I consider screens to be physical and images conceptual. So yes, the top screen creates two images. It still doesn’t fix the peculiar name. Does 3DS mean “3-dimensional screen”? What happened to the “dual” part? I’m okay with accepting that it’s a portmanteau of both: it’s 3D, and it’s a Dual Screen,” and 3DS just happens to sound better than 3DDS.
I'm very sad to see the 3DS go. It was very much the console that I played the most until the Switch came along. This makes me want to revisit my old Animal Crossing New Leaf village even though I've been neglecting my current one in New Horizons due to lack of funds and lack of space. Also, one of the things I'm going to miss with the 3DS that I wished they would impliment into the Switch: wallpapers! I will admit I was kind of irked to have to pay money to have a pretty cosmetic that's going to be blocked by icons anyway. But there's just something satisfying to being greeted by the Eeveeloutions or celebrating christmas with a mario-theme ugly sweater pattern as opposed to just a blank black screen of dark mode. Easier on the eyes, yes. But loses it's appeal really fast.
Also, for late-time newbies looking into game recommendations: Kid Icarus Uprising was hands down my all time favorite 3DS game outside of Pokemon. Also, even though The World Ends With You has a switch port now, I've heard from my boyfriend who owns the switch port and borrowed my DS copy at one point that the DS version is so much better with the touch controls compared to using it in Switch's Handheld mode, and it was a little jarring for him to try to use both joycons to control a character, especially with how finicky the point-sensor was. An OG DS game, Kirby Superstar Ultra will always be near and dear to my heart even if I only used it to play Gormet Race 99% of the time. And of course thanks to the 3DS eShop I was able to get Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold and Silver as digital downloads so I could relive my nostalgia before Pokemon got too greedy... Also, at the risk of being laughed at, I enjoyed the Nintendo Badge Arcade. It was a very cheezy concept and the bunny was grating at times (not to mention the micro transactions to play longer) but I found the crane games oddly satisfying. And I would actually get fustrated when I see a badge I want but is in a tricky spot I can't get to (looking at you Cresselia badge you elusive creature). The fact you can put it on your home screen to further decrorate and customize how your screen looked was an added bonus. On my home page I actually had my games, then further to the right I had a scene laid out with Mario jumping over some obstacles and characters. I just wish they implemented that interactivity with the Switch, especially if it's made to be both a handheld and a docked console. It would help boost the sales even more given how high the demand is from the google searching I've done.
Overall, it's a sad day for us DS Family members but we will carry on the bittersweet memories gone by.
A console is never truly dead until it stops working completely the ds and 3ds will live on with gamers
It’s only just sunk in to me that the thing is technically dead now, as dead as the Gameboy is. I loved this little system (although I currently have a New 3DS XL, so I guess it wasn’t that small), and have logged hundreds of hours into it on just Pokémon alone, not to mention all of my ALBW and Mario 3D Land playthroughs. This is actually really sad, now that I think about it.

@@ZamasuYT19 Howso?
Am i the only person who loved the 3d effect? I seriously dont get it, everyone seems to dislike it, but it was my favorite thing about the system. I literally cranked it up on every game i could, and was always annoyed when games didnt take advantage of it like Pokemon.
I can't agree more, playing the Monster Hunter series alongside Kid Icarus Uprising with full 3d effect was such an unique experience
I wish that they would do repairs for the 3DS when it breaks, I believe that there are some people who use it as a vital tool.
I use mine as a drawing tablet.
I loved the idea but it was still a peoduct of Iwatas foolish design. The 2 screens served little to no purpose for 3rd party games, the clamshell section was fragile & if it broke there goes the whole system, and the 3D was useless. The switch Joy con drift design flaw & the Wii-U i also blame him for. People praise him after he died but alot of his design decisions like friend codes, and no Voice chat i feel almost ruined nintendo. Even on the switch the voice chat app decision was stupid when on every other console its built in.

Chill out Arlo, my ds has lasted for 15 years and still works fine
While I didn't wouldn't say the 3DS is my favourite system, looking back it did have some great games on it. Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Golf World Tour, the Streetpass minigames, Tomodachi Life, Kirby Triple Deluxe and Super Smash Bros 3DS (aka the better of the two Smash 4s). There is so many games I missed out on tho, from Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon to Kirby Planet Robobot, DKC Returns 3D to Kid Icarus Uprising. It's definitely a system I can respect when I look back at it, and while there were some games that are iffy (PM Sticker Star, all the 3DS Pokémon games imo), it's fair to say the library was stacked.
I remember when the 1-2-punch of the 3DS & Wii U having bad sales in their respective initial months led to EVERYONE speculating that Nintendo would drop consoles & go third-party. While I'm glad they didn't, Nintendo really dropped the ball HARD in the early-mid 2010's. At least the 3DS finally started making money, 1 out of 2 comeback stories ain't so bad.
Well... They made the same mistake on both of them. The Wii U should have been called a Super Wii. Same for the New 3DS.
