Gary and I were school friends growing up in Christchurch. I showed him his first bass rift on my Hofner violin bass....... Peter Gunn Theme. We were still in primary school....RIP buddy.
I was born in 1960, Uriah Heep was one of my favourite bands, but I can only now appreciate their real greatness. also thanks to youtube and postings like this one.
I intend to agree, he was a remarkable bass player, he played rather complicated bass lines, which shows that he was there as one of the absolute top bass players.
I am 5 years late on your comment....but there has never been a more brutally honest statement. Dude was incredible. What sucks is you never hear the bass community talking about him. Is is such a legend. He just...had the look😆 and massive chops.
In 1973 I was 11 and Uriah Heep was "my" band. I bought "Sweet Freedom" on Cassette! Til today Gary remains to me as one of the ultimate Rock-Bassplayers. His style was so melodical!
I can't for the life of me explain why Gary never ever gets mentioned in any bass or guitarist magazines.... Is it because Uriah Heep were never press 'darlings'??... Gary Thain's playing is just sublime... As frustrated by his lack of acknowledgment from the press as I am.. Its comforting to read on RUclips that I'm not the only one that can hear his talent.
URIAH HEEP IS A TYPICAL " UNLUCKY " ROCK BAND...THEY BLOSSOMED IN AN AGE OF ROCK GIANTS LIKE CREAM, BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE, LED ZEPPELIN, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, PINK FLOYD AND SO ON...POOR MEDIA SUPPORT & MULTIPLE STANDARDS OF THE PRESS DIMMED THEIR STAR A LOT...
The press was tough on Heep. They dismissed them as banal, derivative, generic, etc. I never understood that, even if they were those adjectives from time to time. Definitely rock legends, and I love Gary's voice here, so Earthy and human.
This is my favourite bass player. R.I.P He played amazing in Uriah Heep. Part of bass in "July Morning" has been incredible... creeps... Gary and his music forever in my mind !
I guess you know that when the original track July Morning was put to the Look At Yourself album he was not the bass player. It was Paul Newton. Gary joined Uriah Heep later. But the way he played July Morning could be heard on the Live 1973 album
Gary Thain and Trevor Bolder among the best rock bass player ever...so underrated...does Gary recorded an entire album or just this song? peculiar vocals...
Weird vocals but it all works very well! Pretty good bass player throughout all his works. This song was done by the "Keef Hartley Band", the band Gary was in shortly before Uriah Heep picked him up. KH was a loose group of comings and going musicians sharing instruments and vocals throughout their catalogue. Members of KH were free to join other musical endeavours while in the band, though Gary left them for good after joining UH. Bloody shame he wrecked himself. Yet another member of the "27" club (primarily notable musicians dying at the age of 27).
This is my favourite bass player ! He was awesome, He played amazing. This is true Gary is one of the best bass player in the history of rock, in the world, in my opinion maybe is the best. . . Greetings from POLAND !
If Gary were to live and also Deep Purple guitarist ( Bolin? ) who overdosed in '75 - if they got together that would have been the start of a great Band..
Gary Thain RIP Such a beautiful, earthy vocalist. This affirms why a band that used vocal harmonies more than most rock bands of 70s would see something in an extremely talented bassist with competent singing ability.
To me, the best bass player ever....feel like I know him now....and yes we will all continue to listen...and as long as the internet holds on, watching Gary do what he loved doing with his friends...what a beautiful guy... and talent...He is so missed.....

Its no secret that Gary was by far the most musically talented of ANY member of Uriah Heep. Much respect to all attempted shoe fillers afterward, as well as any former or current band members...but it was what it was, and it is what it is.
You got a point, Gary Thain is absolutely there as one of the greatest, ever played in Uriah Heep, but I don´t think John Wetton, replacing Thain was a "shoe filler".
no kidding...umbelievable bass player not enough credits..Why? because He was not never the front man...but in my heart..HE kicked some very serious ass...listen to his tracks..R.I.P.
Always makes me ponder why the greatest musical talents almost always are the weakest, too, and why they're so easy to lead astray .. Hell with the drug dealers.

Not only a sublime bass player but also being able to sing with so much emotion.. amazing talent!

Me too. Only at the moment I realize the greatness of UH. I think they are the best.

In the world of the best, greatest, Mr. Thain stood strong.
Sold your eyes they're red with fires above your head,
You feel to fall against the wall you've been lead,
No now you ain't got no heart time to change or the strength to rearrange the words you said,
Your growing old you're feeling cold your hands are dead,
I see you hold your thoughts so bold beside the bed,
And no no no you ain't got no heart time to change nor to rearrange the words you said.
You say your together now------ 3 times
Stand behind the one ya left what's going wrong,
What's going wrong now Lord,
You can't go wrong no,
You can't go wrong no I know.
Say your together now --------- 3 times
And reach out in towards the sun you just begun,
To understand what your father found above the ground,
And no no no you ain't got no heart to change nor rearrange the words you said.
You say your together now ----------- 3 times
Stand behind the one you left what's going wrong,
What's going wrong now Lord
