My worst experience in fountain pens for 2022 - was the lack of honesty, or worse the number of 'influencers' that simply follow the herd. I was shocked to find so many that do not even mention the writing functionality, of a pen? Or how many who collect, and rarely use their pens.
Also my best experience was to find that there are plenty in the hobby that are not driven by hype, but love the use and functionality. The place for form and function to meet.
Status quo is where we are, not where we should be or could be. Always better than the previous version is the only honourable endeavour.

I waited for this video with almost as much anticipation as your best of 2022. In a mentally twisted way, I felt just as "vindicated" by owning 1 kanwrite on that list as I am proud to own several Rangas. Your rebuttal was spot on 👍🏼. Thanks for all you did in 2022, happy Holidays. 🎆

There was a time when I wanted to buy a Kanwrite Heritage, then I have postponed it, good to know I do not need to consider them. I have four Ranga pens - though with nibs from other manufacturers - and I like them a lot. I will probably buy another one or two, this chestnut acrylic is something precisely in my taste.

So I guess you could say the Kanwrite... Kan'twrite. 😅 All jokes aside, thanks for this video! Your breakdown of the 'battle of the brands' between moonman, kaweco etc. At the beginning of the video was really useful for me as I'm new to the community and out of the loop. And I definitely need that 'no' button so that next time my boss asks me to do something, I can turn to her and press it. Gotta establish dominance. 🤣 (I'm on thin ice, huh?) 😩

What's really sad about the Jinhao 65 (the last one you mentionned) is that I really like inking some of my art pieces with it. The thin body makes it comfortable for me for my cross hatching and it did serve me well for a while... However the pen's construction is total crap. In my opinion, a lot of missed potential there. Great video as always!

I'm new to fountain pens and bought my first ever (Kaweco) pen a couple of days before finding this list. After this, I don't think I'll be buying anything else from Kaweco anytime soon. Unfortunately during my Journey To Find A Pen, I made the now horrifying discovery that apparently Kaweco is one of only two affordable fountain pen brands available in my area??? and the only one that sells converters and such. Tis a cruel penless world I live in /j. Thank goodness for international shipping!

9:11 Kanwrite also makes Noodlers pens which bursts that whole bubble of Nathan marketing them as made in the USA. And the veneer that he’s crafting them himself and hand setting the feeds etc. And that the reason they don’t write well out of the box is by design because they’re made to be tinkered with, not that they’re just crappy pens. Sorry if that was a bit ranty lol, the Noodlers mythologizing is one of my pen pet peeves lol.

Hmm, I'll have to dig out your earlier review of FPR. I have mixed feelings about 'em and can see why you panned 'em. I bought a Himalaya a while back and had trouble with some ink leakage for awhile but now I've come to really like how it writes. I went for a Jaipur V2 (ultraflex) and also received a poor sample (piston knob wouldn't) but customer service was great, so #2 V2 was (and is) wonderful. Finally, they partnered with Ranga (or Ranga with them) in the Madras, replete with architect nib. That one's been good right out of the box.

I hate how people get their forks and torches out when a Chinese company gets inspired / copies some western fountain pens. 1st Most well known fountain pens designs were copied by every other big player a long time ago (the cigar shape, hooded nib etc) 2nd Most big companies, as you said, haven't done anything to innovate their products in decades and are still living off their once obtained fame. Other than a few knockoff pens that I had low expectations for anyways, the Majohn pens I got from JetPens (I should have listened to the reviews) were the only ones I was really disappointed in. The TWSBI Go and Kaweco Perkeo did give me issues that make me reluctant to purchase them again (they're the only pens I've messed up the nib when capping it; love the nib but when it's bent out of alignment all the joy is lost).

Kanwrite seems to make at least some of FPR pens, and nibs. My FPR experience has been subpar, not as bad as yours, but certainly no more for me after that anyway. The one Kanwrite I have I am relatively happy with, as it writes well, and the feed nib does the flexy park better than the Noodler's flex pens do. The build quality is abominable, but I paid less than $20 on sale, so I am willing to tolerate it. Even the FPR ebonite pen now serves, although I had to put in a German nib and feed, and the cap seal isn't great. If it wasn't ebonite I might have not bothered.

I've acquired the following Jinhao models: 159, 250, 450, 750, 997, 51A, 86, 100. The only one that works all the time is the 100. All the others are hard to start or leak. So I'm going to throw them all out except for maybe the nibs if they fit the 100. (My cheapest Waterman - Allure and Cross - Bailey light wrote right away and every time I pick them up and they are not that much more than Jinhao's. The important thing for me in a lower cost pen is that function properly. Most Jinhao's do not and are not worth buying at all.
I have a few FPR pens and have problems with those too. They seem to need a wet ink to work, I'm keeping them for now because I want to try them with FOR's own ink. I tried Edelstein Moonstone in the FPR with both flex nibs and had nothing but problems.

Nancy, my first ever Chinese pen was a Orange Jinhao 159, and is still in working order. But I've also had two duds. Hongdian whilst not as cheap as Jinhao, aren't too expensive, and their Forest range of pens are reliable, but Wing Sung vacuum fillers, even at the lower price point like the 3013, are worth a punt. The 3013 uses a No 5 nib, of which there are many replacements if the original doesn't grab you. I myself am a fan of the Wing Sung/Yong Sheng 601A, because it has a wraparound nib, reminiscent of Sheaffer's mid 20th century models, is a proper vacuum filler available in silver or gold metal work - different shades of plastic, and writes like a champ. Yes, it's slightly more expensive than entry level, but it's still cheap for a pen that is good looking, a vacuum filler, and writes well. Aesthetically, it's my bag. However, if you want a really cheap EDC fountain pen, you might consider the Dollar brand fountain pens on eBay. They are piston-filler fountain pens, designed with steel Fine to Medium nibs. They are not sexy to look at in solid red, blue, or black plastic. And the branding will rub off the barrel. But, if you buy the demonstrator model, you will find that you get a cheap, durable EDC fountain pen, with a large ink capacity, and a serviceable nib that writes well, and whose mechanism works at a not to be sniffed at price. I'm using them with Koh-i-noor Document Ink, on Clairefontaine paper, and the lady two I bought have smooth nibs with only a little feedback, that are handling the dry document ink very well. Also, the hard starts you might be getting might be down to the fact that Jinhao cartridge converter pens need to be stored on their side or nib down. If the cartridge converter is part empty when you last write, you might find an air lock develops, which if stored nib up, will cause a hard start until the ink gets back to the feed.

My best experience is this year tho, and that's getting a titanium nib for my current pen, which ironically is Kanwrite Heritage. It cost what it cost but given where I live 40 usd with free shipping is fine for me. I guess I could have gotten a cheaper pen from China that has better quality, but it wouldn't have the option of ebonite feed that goes well together with the Kanwrite flexy titanium nib. Ranga does have good quality pens but the ones available to me were simply out of my budget when coupled with the nib. I'm not picky when it comes to fountain pens tho, so while I do feel like I had to pay a little too much on the pen body I am overall satisfied with it and my overall experience is positive.

There isn’t much in the way of ‘shades of grey’ with these baddies. They’re just bad because of their cheap and nasty build quality. I was hoping for some pens that although well built, just don’t work well.

One of my worst experiences was also one of my better experiences. The Good one was my black on black Jinhao 80 and my red and gold Jinhao 80, the bad was the blue and gold Jinhao 80. While the black and red can go 24+ hours without drying out, the blue one on the other hand can be dried out if it sits unused for even an hour, mainly because the cap is a lot looser than the others.
The very worst fountain pen experience I had this year has been the Staples General Supply fountain pen, after less than a day of sitting unused it refuses to start up, although, it does work again after cleaning and re-inking, but still has the same problem. It also tends to dry out after an hour and then is hard to get going again. It's so bad, I almost forgot about it when writing this.

Personally, as I buy from St Pen PPS their old Wing Sung wraparound nib pens, like the Wing Sung 601A I have had no problems, because they are old stock Chinese pens made for the Chinese Market, and reflect their own idiosyncrasies, which means they don't look much like anything I can afford to buy in the West. Consequently, I've had only 1 dud with a dodgy nib, which became my 1st foray into regrinding a damaged nib into a stub, and which was successful. I don't buy the expensive fakes, as they aren't the real thing in quality. I don't mind what one call "homage" pens like the one you Jinhao 159 and the X159, that are quirky and serviceable pens in their own right, at prices that won't break the bank. And Wing Sung pens can be of decent quality, but you have to pick the right models, and not be greedy. And that goes for all the Chinese makers except Pen BBS who have the formula right for Western collectors, and possibly Hongdian, the latter who has been delivering pens of decent quality recently, although for me aesthetically unexciting. The last dud I bought was a Jinhao sadly. It was a Parker 100 lookalike, with poor acrylic, and a poor nib unit. I never got it to write, and it's in landfill, because it wasn't even worth scavenging for parts. So, even the formerly reliable Jinhao delivers duds, and has done so for me twice. I do better when I stay away from the pretty acrylic, and stick to more classic designs and materials.

I really wish I would’ve known about FPR earlier than I did. I bought a 14k gold nib pen only to find out that the pen bodies were rubbish, and the 14K nib tip, about a fourth of an inch of it, which includes the gold, is dark with idk what very badly. I emailed the owner and then returned it to him to check it out to make sure it was a real gold never. he said it was fine and it was real gold. He then questioned me and asked me saying, “ What have you done with this nib? What have you put in it? I said this pen was used once. I cleaned it, filled the converter with Waterman’s Serenity blue, I let my sister write with her new pen. Since then it has rested safely in leather, three pen holder, and the next time we pulled out the pen a week later or so, it was tarnished on the clip with pock marks, the section was cracked, and the tip of the nib is brown and black. He said I just buffed it out and it’s fine. I don’t know what you did to the nib and pen. And sent it back to me. Which pissed me off because he said if I was unhappy with it, I could get a refund or a new pen and nib. But before I even hit the reply button and hit send with what I wanted to do with it or about it, he said, sorry I already sent it back to you yesterday. I will never buy from them again. I cringe every time I think about it all.
The worst part for me was that it was a present for my sister. I thought I was buying a good product. I knew very little about pens at the time. Then to add insult to injury I also bought myself one. Mine never tarnished or anything like that. But with strange is even though we both have 14 karat gold nibs in our pens, hers is nice and flexible which it’s supposed to be because it’s a 14 K flex nib, but mine is hard as a nail. it is physically thicker and has a different color to the gold and won’t move 1 mm. After I went through that whole debacle with FPR I didn’t have the heart to deal with anymore. I should have, but at this point, I call it lessons learned. Never again. Cheers

Bummer about your rotten experiences with FPR’s pens. I’ve accrued a weirdly large number of them recently and I think there’s only one I really don’t like. The other have all been fantastic. I think my FPR count is 3 Jaipurs (all V1 w/ the EF UF nibs), 3 Himalayas, one Indus I don’t really care for (shameless Pelikan ripoff but it works well), and 3 Darjeelings.
I *really* love FPR’s ultraflex nibs. Both sizes have worked great.
All those Indian pens need a good scrub when you get them though. I’ve seen some pretty reckless amounts of machining oil left in there.
And I agree that Kanwrite most likely makes the FPR pens. But Kevin has gotten pretty damn good at his nib grinding. I’ve been running three of his architect nibs for a few months and they’ve been flawless.
