Your lesson: 1.snap off scapes to improve quality of edible plant. 2. Grocery store bulbs are not always the best source for seed. They are often treated with sprout retardant to store for marketing. Also most garlic require planting in previous fall for a prolonged cold wintering over if you want good bulb formation and harvest the following june-july (from clove plantings). In milder winter climates or if you plant in the spring they usually take longer or don't develop at all the first year. If you plant the bulbials they will always require a 2 yr cycle to form bulbs as they are a seedlet ( actually they are cormes) great harvest!
The scapes are edible and taste really good. Keep the smaller garlic plant in the soil. They overwinter pretty well outdoor. Whatever you don't harvest will grow back, juts like sunchoke.
There are some fairly mild French softneck varieties. I grew thermidrome this year and they have not cured yet but I can easily eat 4 fresh cloves in a pasta sauce to myself. They will get stronger when dried but I can tell they are never going to be strong.
Thank you :) The elephant garlic in this video grows very easily. I do not fertilize them. Surprisingly, they grow in my native clay soil just happily. It seems that they like full sun. I have my ground on automatic irrigation. To answer your watering question, I would treat them like many plants-- moist soil but not water logged. Elephant garlic is special and unlike true garlic, I found that they require less care. With garlic, I am finding that they need a lot of nutrients. It helps a lot to feed them. I would experiment with a liquid fertilizer. In fact, this year, I am planting a lot of garlic and have amended the soil with lots of compost. I plant to feed them once more in the spring with an additional topping of compost and will also experiment with fish fertilizer.
I know a retired farmer who sale crops on a you pick up at the farm deal. He has a lot of poeple who want it green. The "seeds" will grow or you can pickle them.
haha. With the climate and elephant garlic, it is pretty much around all year round either in plant form, bulb form, or somewhere in between. It practically grows itself and great for sharing with friends and folks nearby.
How well does elephant garlic do in reduced sunlight? I want to plant vegetables/edibles, wife wants flowers. The flower beds are mostly on the north side of the house (SW Wisconsin). So I am a seeking a happy medium:). Thanks for any advice and a thumbs up and thanks for the video :)
Ah, edibles vs ornamentals...a universal struggle, lol. I happen to be a hybrid of that struggle (dad grew edibles.) As a result, I grow both ;D I am not entirely sure it'll make big bulbs in part shade. It would be a nice experiment. If growing in shade, I would make sure that the soil is nice and rich. Maybe I'd top it off with compost once a month. It will be great to know your results. Maybe also the Mrs. is ok with planting a clove or two in the flower bed. The elephant garlic plant can add some interesting ornamental appeal :) You're welcome and I am glad that you came across this video. :)
Nice harvest! Elephant garlic are great -- so eager to grow and so easy to store! Do you find that you get volunteers that come up from where you thought you harvested everything? I get them from the bulbils that break off during harvest and from seeds that get scattered about.
HChrisH200 - Haphazard Homestead Thanks! Indeed! They are super easy to grow and stores well. With limited time, I pulled these out pretty quickly and did not spend too much time searching for stray bulbils. As a result, I am sure to find some extra volunteers come next year.
Hi, Prakriti. In southern California and many parts of the country, October is generally a good time to start planting garlic. These garlic (while not scientifically classified as garlic) grow pretty big, yeah. There many considerations when planting garlic. I sort of explain garlic basics in the following video ruclips.net/video/9k-VgeIIS14/видео.html . I probably can do a better job in that video so please let me know if anything needs further clarification.
okay! actly I am from India, here temperature in October is quiet high almost 85 degree F.. so I m bit concerned about the temperature? can I plant garlic in 85 degree F?...I really appreciate ur reply.. thanks for d link as well!!!... :))
To answer your question first: 85 F is generally too warm for garlic. Maybe through this conversation, I will learn more about your climate. I wonder if our seasons differ. October is the tail end of summer. I would then say, plant garlic one month prior to the start of the fall season. If you're growing softneck garlic, there is an additional window at the beginning of spring.
okay ... here winters start from November starting so I guess that would be the right time... in nov starting temperature is approximately 54-55 °F.... thanks a lot for d reply,,,,,
It sounds like we may have very similar climates. In that case, here's a quick recap: Hardneck garlic: plant in October ruclips.net/video/nt8QST0Yyyk/видео.html Hardneck garlic: plant in October and/or March You're welcome. Best to you and garlic planting.
Can u do some landscape ideas? I have hoa and I also live in SoCal. Desperately need some idea to grow in my north facing front yard. I can’t do well with the grass.
That is a topic that I want to cover in depth in the future. One way to grow food in the front yard without drawing attention is to interplant them with landscape plants or plant them as landscape plants. Here is a quick example. ruclips.net/video/oxt7wsa8tRw/видео.html
In case you need some motivation to grow that elephant garlic! Here is the definitive elephant garlic sauce recipe-traditional in Tuscany and usually served over pici (a type of handmade pasta): ruclips.net/video/thrkszTLgIQ/видео.html
I live in 10b. In this zone we do not get frost. I do not have a planting video. Elephant garlic are very easy plants to grow. I normally stick the in the ground and just cover the tip with dirt or soil.
hi I noticed you replied to every body so is it okay if caterpillars munch on the leaves because it's a problem I can't fix my dad tried spraying the bugs but they keep coming back
Hello, carter spider. I am glad that I am able to reply to comments. Sounds like the caterpillars are hungry. In my experience, I havent had trouble with caterpilars *knock on wood* Generally, caterpillars are bad. If they munch up too many of the leaves, the plant will have less of an ability to harvest the sun's energy. With spraying not working, I would try planting a trap crop. Plant something fast growing like kale and let the caterpillars eat that instead. Also, I would try to look up what caterpillar it is and see if there are other means to rid them.
Never Enough Dirt I did apparently they are horn worms and I found a big orb Weaver and gave it a feast because I didn't want them eating my pineapple plant or my cabbage so heh
This is going to be my first year growing elephant garlic, and there is a grower from South America, whom says ,that the best way to grow big heads, is by removing the flowers
That is correct. It is best to remove the scape (as the flower stalks are called) to allow for larger heads. These are fun to grow; great that you are growing them this year.
Hello. sorry, I am currently not selling elephant garlic. They are getting popular. If you find some at the market, try growing from those. Otherwise look for seed garlic. Garlic growing has become super popular and you should be able to locate some online.
Elephant Garlic are big but no taste like original garlic and they need lots of sun as you see the one you have in full sun are biger then others.im fan of regular garlic taste better.
That's very true. They have very very mild garlic flavor when cooked. Best to use them for their crunchy texture. Used fresh, they are great as garlic aioli. I as well enjoy garlic that retains garlic flavor when cooked. My favorite one to grow is the 'Chesnok Red' hardneck garlic.

Thank you. I know I say those things a lot in my earlier videos. It takes practice to be a better presenter. For me it was very unfamiliar to speak to a camera.
That's rough. I had an issue with a plant that is being grown as a hedge. Using a two to three foot long log, one was installed as a post near the plant to draw the dogs' interest. That seemed to work.
Hi. This is the time of the year when elephant garlic are being harvested. You should see them in the market soon. I imagine stores like Sprouts, Whole Foods, or Trader Joe's would carry them. Hopefully you live near one of those.

About the corms… that’s exactly what I’ve heard about growing here in SC!
Fantastic video, the best on the subject throughout all of RUclips. God bless and stay safe
Thanks! Stay safe.
The front yard looks beautiful 😻 you must have extra rich soil those garlic bulbs are massive!
Thank you. Surprisingly, those garlic bulbs grew from our native California clay. My guess is that it is the all sun that grew those.
Never Enough Dirt cut the flowers 🌺 as soon as possible for the garlic growing more 👍🏻
Helpful video. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Wow that is awesome... I would try this type in Arab Gulf area. I don't know if it will grow here or not but I have to try and see
Nice job, i grow garlic myself, you use well the space you had, excellent integration
Thank you, Andre.
The scapes are edible and taste really good. Keep the smaller garlic plant in the soil. They overwinter pretty well outdoor. Whatever you don't harvest will grow back, juts like sunchoke.
Thanks for the tips!
Wow ! Beautiful harvest ! I'm excited to harvest my garlic when it's time.
+Amma Ebi Thanks. I hope you have lots of fun getting them out of the ground. Just a few months away!
Those little hard shelled "bulbs" are called corms. Cheers! Nice looking elephant garlic!
Cheers, Tom! :D
I like your yard and the steps inspired me to do some too.
Thanks, Butler. I really dig the flow/movement from staggering.
So if you let the scape grow into a floret, will they produce seeds that can then be replanted?
Yes. However, from seed to large cloves can take 3 years.
If u cut the scapses. 30% larger bulbs
The flowers are edible and very flavorful on most any garlic. Ganish tartars....
There are some fairly mild French softneck varieties. I grew thermidrome this year and they have not cured yet but I can easily eat 4 fresh cloves in a pasta sauce to myself. They will get stronger when dried but I can tell they are never going to be strong.
Very good video ...how often did you water your garlic and did you use a liquid fertilizer
I planted my garlic August 23 this year and I'm tempted to use the liquid fertilizer for experimental basis

They are a sight to see and one of the easiest "garlic" to grow. :)

Booo, horn worms. Last year I discovered how helpful spiders are. I bet the orb weaver had a nice meal.
So, I know that elephant garlic was in the leek family but I had no idea that the flower looked like chives!
hello its from everest n I want elephant garlic to grow n its not available in nepal. how can I got it.

are those florets (sp?) edible?

Do garlic love water?
Elephant garlic is a very tolerant plant. Garlic, however, must have moist, well draining soil, and lots of nutrients in a very sunny location.
