  • Armed forces around the world are being called upon to make greater contributions to humanitarian operations, as wars in Europe and the Middle East have recently demonstrated. Climate change will continue to exacerbate growing demands on the existing humanitarian response infrastructure. Yet, the effective and efficient coordination of humanitarian operations between defence establishments can be a challenge: armed forces must also tend to core missions at home, and recipients sometimes struggle to rationalise offers of assistance. This session will consider how the international community can meet its obligations to populations in need, as armed forces balance these increased demands with traditional defence responsibilities.
