I was about 13 when I saw this on t.v. as soon as the Komodo Dragon started going out of the car I began laughing my ass off, because I knew all hell was about to break loose, I laughed so hard when I first saw this.

I think that's actually an Asian Water Monitor and now a Komodo. Usually Komodos have solid Grey, Brown, or Orange Scales, along with a more Spade Shaped Snout. Asian Waters on other hand would have mostly Brown with White Stripe Scales while their Snout is somewhat Pointer. And they more than likely don't grow any bigger than that, while Komodos could eventually get over Twice That Size on average! Criticisms aside, this is still an absolutely funny scene. Cinema definitely needs to be more Monitor Lizard Representation in my opinion.
You are correct. I saw something where they explained that they couldn’t use an actual komodo dragon. I believe from memory that it has something to do with their dangerous claws, etc. being unworkable for safety reasons.
I is said that the Backside of most Monitor Claws always grow faster than the Underside, which insures that their claws are Almost Always Sharp@@strictnonconformist7369. They would've needed Lizard Nail Clippers on the scene. But I don't think they would've been that common at the time, and I'm sure that they realize if they Clipped em, I audience would've seen them which would look Less Intimidating. And lastly, we all know how Much More Common Asians are compared to their Komodo Counterparts. So I'm pretty darn sure that it would've been for Budget reasons as well.

As a native South Jerseyan, I was more disappointed that the Komodo Dragon scene was supposed to be in Cherry Hill, NJ and they filmed it in Canada.
And that Cherry Hill is depicted as the middle of nowhere, which even in 1990 wouldn't be close to true.
This was my favorite scene in the movie.
