Hey Man, this was a very Good Down To Earth Video for the "simple guy". I only play as a recreational player. I'm 71 YO, retired, who resurrected playing Drums after 50 Years [1969]. I've learned lots on the WEB - all about Drum Heads & Tuning, stuff I knew nothing about way back When. This video shows how much Micing the drums affects the delivered Sound. The Miced up Snare sounds is good to me. I like that POP with just a little overtone. From watching this I see now How Much the Mic affects the sound. I've been using a HD Dry Batter head on my Brass and Maple Snares. I have them both Cranked up high on both sides. That gets me close to what I like to hear. I will tell you a "weird" thing I experienced. I placed my DW Design Series Brass 14 X 6.5 Snare on my 16 inch Floor tom to get it out of the way. I played the Maple snare during a playing session, and during a Fill, I hit the DW snare on top of the Tom. Bingo - that delivered the sound I was looking for!! Ludwig Supraphonic like - Jon Bonham sound. When I took the Snare off the tom, it was not the same. The same result when putting it in the Snare stand. One poster on a drum forum said that I was actually playing 2 Drums at the same time (I have G2 coated heads on the Toms). Another poster said that I may have Invented a New Style Snare Stand. Any idea of what's going on ? BTW, no matter how tune the Snare, I cannot get to that same sound compared to be on the Floor Tom?
Oooo that's an interesting finding bro 🤔 Have you given muffling a go for that snare? (putting a wallet on top, or duct tape, or moongels). With metal snares, which tend to have lots of ringing overtones, a thicker head like you've put on can help a lot, but sometimes creating the right amount of muffling can work wonders too 👍
I've never watched a more concise and easy to follow snare tuning video. I've been watching drum tuning videos for the last 10 years and finally someone did it right. Very, very well done. Thank you!
If you want to see the best way to tune your snare, toms, kick drum well watch Bob Brown. THE easiest way and the fastest way and it works great ! ruclips.net/video/F8grz4cVELw/видео.html
Great video instruction for tuning the snare. Easy to follow and understand. Methodical, yet simple. Going for your toms tuning next, them kick. I want to get that nice tone on my toms that you have. Thanks for sharing.
Came for the tips, slowed the vid down for the small licks. Definitely appreciate the contrast between raw mic audio and mixed audio! I know what vid to watch next B)
Loving the content! Could you possibly do a video on how you mix and master your recordings and how you position your drum mics for the best possible sound. Thanks again!
I am dead shocked that you use one of my fav snare heads… and yet you don’t crank the living 💩 out of it lol. For me, I like a lot more crack and more sensitivity/response. So I love the p77 CRANKED for a dry focused and responsive crack. But that’s just me 🤷🏽♂️
I now you tune your snares by ear/feel, but generally would you say (for medium and high tunings on the batter ) that your bottom snare usually ends up being lower than the top head?
Great vid J Rod!! I play at a church w/o a mic system for drums and I wanted to ask you, what batter and reso head combo works best for you to get that nice snare crack sound but without being mic’d up?
Your narration seemed to go out of sync slightly before 20:20, while you were discussing the throw-tension but tuning the batter-head lugs instead. Huh?
So Where do you have the screw and throw off switch when you’re putting the snares back on? Do you have that screw tight, loose, somewhere midway? is the switch up or down? or does that really even matter in your opinion when it comes to trying to get the best sound out of your snare?
This was awesome. I had no idea that the throw off switch could be used to get a desired sound. I thought it was just used to hold the snare gate to the head. So what do you recommend if one of the toms vibrates when the snare is struck because of similar frequencies?
I suggest leaving the drums as they are if you have them tuned how you want. If it is noticeable in the mix, I’ll just add a gate to that particular tom.
I'm just looking for the guy in the comments that's gonna give a short story on how they have been a sound engineer for 20 years and few drummers do yada yada yada. I enjoy those comments 😂
Hello Sir J Rod, is it advisable to dis-tune after a gig or when packing in up in the bag ?? Sometimes I just leave my snare drum tuned and packed in the bag to be moved anywhere. Guys, which is the preferred one please 🙏
The jazz in the background makes this video all the better.
that high pitch sound you did is definitely my preferred sound when it comes to having the snare pop!!
I was about to spend 450$ on a masters maple snare, but your video helped get my decade maple to sound great. It's all about tuning. Much love brother
Great job - this is the one I've been waiting for! Now it's time to show us how you mix your drums on your DAW
Yesss!!
Yhhhh
Fr😩
The mixing video is live! 😎
@@JRODSULLIVAN thank you so much! Keep up the great work

That accidental hi-hat hit with the hoop at 4:04 was right with music in the background too.

The mid range sound is my favorite.
Oh hell ya! Been waiting on this one! Thanks so much!
Super eq for snare. Can you show eq setings for that sound? Thx...
J.Rod, great stuff! I have a very similar tuning process for my snare. Would love to know more about your mixing! Hope you post a video on that soon!
Good Vibezzzzzz 👍🏾 thanks for sharing 💪🏿✊🏾
so good!
Thankyou, this takes patients☺
Can you do a video on your what you use studio wise. Mics? Plug ins? Cables? Please and thank you!
It’s live!
Very good I've been waiting for this one.

Perfect
Appreciate the content 👌🏾 dope 🔥 🔥🔥
Dawg you incredible
Thank you
Nice tones on the snare I was wondering can you do it the same on a metal snare
YEEESSSSIIIIRRRRR
That mid range was nice
Good stuff!
Awesome my brother!! ❤️🔥🔥🔥

Downloaded and saved to watch again and again. Much appreciation 🙏🙏
NOTE: THE most important thing when placing a new head is to MAKE SURE the SEAM IS CENTERED BETWEEN 2 LUGS!
Finally ❤️❤️❤️

Thank🔥‼️‼️finally!!!!🔥🙏🏼😭
Thank you bro this was so helpful ❤
Sometimes you hear tones from the cymbals too...not just the Toms
That's why I don't like to tune my snare around a kit
I now you tune your snares by ear/feel, but generally would you say (for medium and high tunings on the batter ) that your bottom snare usually ends up being lower than the top head?
So which drumheads are the really good ones
Great vid J Rod!! I play at a church w/o a mic system for drums and I wanted to ask you, what batter and reso head combo works best for you to get that nice snare crack sound but without being mic’d up?
Thanks! I like the coated controlled sound reverse dot by remo as the batter head. Clear ambassador as the reso 👍🏽
Please, do you have a course on how to play drums?
Lesssgoooo
Hi Rod what was the Kick Side Skin was It a Remo Cs black Dot Many thanks Peter
Mics make a big difference
Your narration seemed to go out of sync slightly before 20:20, while you were discussing the throw-tension but tuning the batter-head lugs instead. Huh?
Not out of sync. It’s just additional information.

Well the throw off should be off, idk how J-Rod does it but for me I have the throw off screw about halfway, a little more on the looser side though
This was awesome. I had no idea that the throw off switch could be used to get a desired sound. I thought it was just used to hold the snare gate to the head. So what do you recommend if one of the toms vibrates when the snare is struck because of similar frequencies?

you don’t tension too much bottom head, do you?
I actually do. I like for the resonant head to be tight.
@@JRODSULLIVAN thanks 🖖
What was the new batter head you put on? My go to batter head is hard to find now so I need a replacement.
Remo Coated P77
What high hats do you use
I'm just looking for the guy in the comments that's gonna give a short story on how they have been a sound engineer for 20 years and few drummers do yada yada yada. I enjoy those comments 😂
This sound like Dirty Loops Style
Why does the drum sound better going through the microphone?
Never heard a loose snare that I liked. But too cranked gets it sound like the st anger snare. Ugh.
Hello Sir J Rod, is it advisable to dis-tune after a gig or when packing in up in the bag ?? Sometimes I just leave my snare drum tuned and packed in the bag to be moved anywhere. Guys, which is the preferred one please 🙏
I always leave my drums tuned. I never detune unless I’m planning on changing the heads or the tones of my drums.
@@JRODSULLIVAN thank you very much for that, appreciated 🙏🙏
Ft
What snares would u recommend for a more high pitch sound?? I really like a lotta bite when I hit my snare
The Pearl Reference is my go to 👍🏽 and the Pearl Brass Free Floater.
@@JRODSULLIVAN Thanks 💯 keep up the good content my brotha !
