  • She's skinless! Not boneless, at least not yet. Another week working on the rebuild of my 1961 Aljo vintage camper photo booth and the skins are all off. In this video I'm sharing some tips and tools that I use to remove the skins of vintage campers. My biggest tip if you're thinking of rebuilding a camper? 📣 YOU CAN DO IT! TAKE OFF THE SKINS 📣

    Wow. I have never seen such beautiful bones on such an old camper. Later. OK I see. The bones are beautiful because this is the one you rebuilt a while back.

      Yeah, that's only a five year old rebuild, but you can already see some water infiltration due to a few easy mistakes that I made putting it together. We're gonna try to correct all that this time.

    I believe you said in an earlier video that if you were to do this again you would do it in a shop under cover. My biggest concern is leaving the framing exposed to the elements. I bought a big silver tarp to cover mine, even with the skins on, as I have some leaks. It is just too rainy in Tennessee to even think of doing this outdoors. My garage doors are too low to get my trailer into. Thus, I procrastinate to get necessary repairs done.

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  Год назад

      Oh, I think I've said that many times, but here we are, lol! It doesn't take much rain to ruin your paneling so coverage is a must. Harbor Freight sells an inexpensive car canopy that can be raised a bit with conduit to provide some coverage, but I still throw a tarp over it when it rains.

      @@TrailerTrashtoTreasure I always put a sheet of 6 mil plastic under my tarps. The weave on tarps can start to wear and then they open up. The plastic insures you have an extra barrier against the elements. The tarp protects the plastic from the sun.
      For getting a trailer into a garage, depending on the height of the trailer, one can remove the wheels and roll it into the garage on the hubs. It can buy you about 5 inches. Also, remove the roof vent or don't forget it's up there when you measure.

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  8 месяцев назад

      I've been meaning to start buying some heavier duty tarps that'll hopefully last a bit longer than the cheap ones they sell at the hardware store, but my little canopy has been doing a pretty good job for the last year.
      My garage is over 100 years old, so the only way I could fit a camper in there would be if I took the suspension off and slid it in on furniture movers, lol!

    I’m also in the middle of restoring my 12 foot 1957 Calcraft trailer. My goal is to restore it back as original as possible. If you have any cabinet hardware you are not using I would like to talk with you to see if you would be willing to part with anything.
    I enjoy your channel and have been following you since you started working on your Claymore.

      Hey thanks for following along! I'm probably not wanting to turn loose of anything until I'm finished with it just in case I decide to go a different direction, but at that point I'd consider it; although, that might be a while at the rate I'm going!

      Thank you so much. Please let’s keep in touch, I’ve got a long way to go on my restriction , what started out to be a fix up on a few side panels has turned into a frame up restoration. This is way over my skill level. Thank goodness for family.

      Ah, if you've got the skills to fix a few side panels, you've got the skills to do a frame up.

    When you cut the wires to the tail lights, it seemed like you cut them kind of short. I can't be sure. I saw you pull them out and then cut them. For a newbie watching this and they need to remove a tail light, I caution in cutting the wire short. If that's done, then there isn't much wire to work with and sometimes that wire coming out of the tail light hole is already really short. This becomes an issue if you aren't removing the skins. Make sure you leave enough to work with.

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  11 месяцев назад +1

      That's a good point. I completely rewired these old lights so I wasn't concerned, but yeah it's always a good idea to leave more than you think you need.

    I've been looking for a vintage camper, all the decent looking ones in my area are 7k plus. One day i will find one that's less than 5k, what I can gut and rebuild.

      @@TrailerTrashtoTreasure The only cheap one I've found is a Scotty with the side aluminum ripped away from the roof at the top with a lot of water damage. No Aljo, Play Mor, or Calcrafts in my area, everyone has a Shasta for sale for 7k or more.

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  Год назад

      Yeah, I've probably seen more Shastas for sale around here than any other single brand of camper. I almost bought one recently, but it was about an hour drive home, and the guy had torn the back end out so it would've had to have been trailered. It was a bigger project than I was looking for, and honestly I don't really like Shastas.
      Keep looking, you'll find one eventually!

    Question on all the exterior screws on the wall skins like the vertical line you talked about. How are those sealed for water where the screw penetrates the skin, like a neoprene washer like you see in roofing? Or is there butyl in-between where the skins meet?

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  Год назад +1

      There's butyl between the two pieces of skin. I was actually a little surprised to see how well it sealed, 'cause I remember when I was originally sealing it up there I thought it wouldn't be enough, but there was zero water penetration at that point.

      That gunk is what reseals things. It's called butyl tape and putty tape, and you can get it at most RV shops.

    Hey Conan, I do have a question I am in the middle of rebuilding a 1965 Santa Fe cub and I noticed you said you want to put the weight toward the front and I was thinking to put mine towards the back so I can use the countertops in the front. They were existing to place the printer and the camera . What are your thoughts?

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  Год назад

      Weight balance is important for towing, not so much once you're set up. If you're not changing your overall layout you probably don't have much to worry about, but take a look at this regarding weight distribution:

      HA HA HA, best comment!
      So I suppose the answer is that you'd HAVE to be stupid to do this, lol!
      Truthfully, it's more a question of whether you're detail oriented and how good you are at taking measurements and notes. There are some things though that you learn with experience, but you don't gotta be smart to be experienced.
