I have a first year silver Calcutta 200, and it was hardly ever used, but I feel the same way. Loosened the tension on the tension knob and it still doesn't roll off smooth. I might be getting some boca bearings for it. I already have a black gomexus handle on it.
Before you did anything to that reel it is comparable to “modern day technology”. Calcuttas are super smooth and bullet proof. These reals last for decades/lifetime. The “new technology” plastic wonder reels will never make it that long.
Great Video Ryan!!! I own 2 of these exact reels and have been using them since the mid 90's. I use them for large swimbaits like 8" Magdrafts and 5-6" Glidebaits. Quick tip if you have not done so yet. On the back side of the spool are the 6 breaks. I started with 3 on 3 off. I currently use 2 on 4 off and rarely backlash. but I also use 50 braid to 20 floro.
This handle fell off on me after catching a 7lb striper lol It sucks how it doesn’t have the screw and lock and only has the cap to secure it. I’m curious did you leave the stock friction washer on the reel or take it off for the new handle? Also did you use any of the washers it came with…?
Those reels need better drags. Carbon fiber drag would be a huge upgrade to the stock drag. I upgraded all my 50 series with carbon fiber drag washers.
I would assume that clicking noise was just some grease/oil lacking. Also I got reels older than that Calcutta casting farther than that my main is a Abu Garcia S3600 c about same age and then a older Shimano curado banta. But neat
I have 2 TE 200GTs and 1 TE 100GT. How can I order the correct Gomexus Power handles for all three? (I upgraded the bearings to Boca Ceramic bearings already).
You didn't even get the side plate back on flush. That's why it sounds like rotten ass. Smooth as butter though- lol. So...30 years from now that Calcutta will still be performing (if you assemble it correctly), and that Tranx will have already been in a landfill for 20 years. There's a reason why you can buy two Tranx's for the price of a Calcutta. You should just buy an Okuma- they're designed for bank fisherman that just flop fish on the concrete...
Should of removes the rubber shields. They will swell and decrease performance of the bearings. Vibrate the bearings in acetone, let them dry then add a drop of Zpi bearing oil or TSI 321.
These are beautiful reels. Works of art. Great for bass. Just not strong enuff for big river stripers in strong current. The line capacity isnt enuff and the drags are quite weak.

Does it matter which pattern you engage/disengage the weights??

Carbon fiber drag would be a huge upgrade to the stock drag.
I upgraded all my 50 series with carbon fiber drag washers.
The e series Shimano handles fit these reels. Also some of the straight power handle from Shimano. Doesn't interfere with the star drag.
I have the 200 update version in my honest opinion not bad at all with the price even I also get it for a deal on offer up as well

10:42 faster bearings will shoot line out quicker and you have to really keep on it...
