Depeche Mode are a really fun band! As other comments mention, their discography is filled with bangers, and even some of their deeper cuts are also pretty cool, catchy and memorable. They know how to write riffs, motifs and choruses for sure. Violator is probably one of their biggest albums carried by the massive singles Personal Jesus and Enjoy the Silence. I've always enjoyed the bluesiness of their sound, and this one is an album that definitely sits in the middle of their dark take on synthpop from the mid-to-late 80s and the more alternative rock (and even grungy) sound from the albums that followed Violator. Great insight as always, Byran, and it's always great to see you enjoy the music as much as you did here!
Secrecy is such a good way to describe this song (and album by extension). It gives me noir vibes but less sci-fi and more renaissance style. Similar to the Madonna video "Vogue" with all those weird shadows and shit.
There was treated feedback in the mix for quite some time, I think the guitar hit was there to almost let you know the guitar was on the song. I remember getting this album right when it came out, I even bought the Personal Jesus single when it came out in late 89, so technically this album rode the edge of the 80s and ushered in the 90s. I saw them on the World Violation tour, too. It was such a wonderful experience that I have never wanted to even try to top it. This entire album is perfection front to back, even the B-sides are great. Dangerous would have been on most bands' albums. The band is fairly interesting as far as electronic bands go, until the next album, they used to construct all of their synth sounds to ensure they were different from other bands, and they would also sample things to use on songs, like one song has the sound of a rock tumbling down a metal gutter, stuff like that.
Great stuff. This song is a banger, but not the most interesting one of the album. I much prefer the opener "The World in My Eyes" and the atmospheric masterpiece "Waiting for the Night". But this band has a ridiculous amount of bangers. Black Celebration, Stripped, Never Let Me Down Again, Strangelove, In Your Room (album version), Rush, Precious, etc etc etc. I hope to see you react to some of those one day
That's a very good list of recommendations! My order (specially for reactions) would be »Never let me down again«, »World in my eyes«, »Stripped«, »Black Celebration«, »Strangelove« - and I would add »I feel you« to the mix.
@@marcfinch8915 I Feel You, Little 15, Walking in My Shoes, Barrel of a Gun, It's No Good, John the Revelator, Flies on the Windscreen....way too many classics to choose from :D and I'm not even mentioning the somewhat overplayed hits like Personal Jesus and Enjoy the Silence, everybody knows them already

Ich habe mir mal die Mühe gemacht, eine persönliche Top Ten zu erstellen und POT ist mein Platz 10! Übrigens der einzige Song aus Violator. Ist so unglaublich schwer die Masse an Meisterwerken zu beurteilen.
@@eboethrasher MFTM is a great album, but there are several tracks that many would say are just filler and experimental. And then you have the remixes as part of the album too, which is not normal. I agree with you, it's a great album, but it requires an open mindset to really enjoy some of the tracks, namely Pimpf, Agent Orange, Pleasure Little Treasure, and to some extent I Want You Now. The casual listener will skip those tracks mid-song and probably not have an interest to hear them again. It's only the people who are devoted a listener that can see the genius the album has in its entirety who will appreciate these tracks.
Everyone knows Synthpop attained perfection in 1990 with Violator and Behaviour by Pet Shop Boys. It did say in the description for the Patreon poll that "classic" was "Any song from the 70s, 80s, or 90s." There was A LOT of music made before the 70's 😁
Hey I saw how much you liked the normal album by will wood so just wanted to recommend either Everything is a lot or In case I make it as they are both great albums and show different points in WW life ❤️
Depeche Mode was one of those intro bands, as I moved from a tween just listening to top 40s radio, to an angsty teen who wore a lot of black (goth/industrial-adjacent geek). They seemed dark and a bit dangerous without being embarassingly transgressive or . Between all of that and the homoerotic subtext, S&M references and atheism, what was not to love? Still, by 16 or so, I was pa st it and have never really looked back. Plenty of jams and fond memories, but so much of it now seems as cringe as the rest of my teenage taste. At least I didn't join the cult that formed around the band in Poland. That's some whacky stuff.
I always thought the song was more ironic than I think you're suggesting. We all know assholes who claim to just be honest, or just to always 'tell it like it is.' My assumption here isn't that the narator is claiming truth-telling is bad idea, but that the subject of their song is either using it as an excuse or exercising some mindless policy without thinking about the consequences. Ironincally calling out some virtue-signalling jerk is how I guess I might summarise it.

Love this. Used to blast it out of the stereo when I got my first car in summer of 89.
Maybe the best band in the last 30 years
Best song off of their best album imho
This was my favorite band back in the 80s!😍🎸

Agreed❤
Why does everyone skip over Music for the Masses? Such a great album, better than Ultra by a mile.

If you watch the music video for this song, it'll make a lot more sense. 😉

It's a good bluesy guitar riff at the beginning. Why is it played on a keyboard...😮
