@@mr.stuffdoer8483 That can be said about all of Lance's characters. Worry about the future of Destiny and Horizon without his voice talent's for those series as well. Though they are shown running here in the animation too; theres a difference between running through half a city that is activley being torn to pieces and running to the nearest tree to jump directly home. They were nearly taken out just by the poison gas at the castle, no way they'd have made it through acid rain and that fire bomb like is shown here.
One of the craziest parts of this is during the session, the dragons weren't really making rolls, it just happened. The whole thing was Matt gleefully destroying the rich complicated setting he'd been building up for years, like a kid stomping down an exquisite sandcastle they made. You're horrified, you want to yell "stop!" but it's their sandcastle, so you can't really do anything about it.
Yep, and to add to why; you don't roll for things that would almost certainly succeed. Meaning, there was literally nothing they could do to prevent this. Watching this unfold on Twitch was fuckin wild, one of my favourite memories of the stream (and there are tons of those)

Yeah it's always great when this happens with a reaction series. Having someone who can explain any in-jokes that go over others heads or clear up confusion so they don't spend ages talking about something unimportant/inconsequential really helps. Hell just being able to give them all the names of important characters is massive. Wish this happened more often honestly.
For those wondering, as of this post here are the campaign lengths for Critical Role. Campaign 1 (of which Legend of Vox Machina is the adaptation of) is sitting at just over 459 hours long, counting the 115 episodes of the main campaign as well as the 3 epilogue bonus episodes that came out afterwards. Campaign 2 (which the recently announced Mighty Nein animated series will adapt) is at a hefty 566 hours spread across the 141 episodes and 2 bonus reunion episodes that came out afterwards. A third reunion is planned in the coming months. Campaign 3, the current campaign, is sitting at 275 hours so far as of the 70 episodes we've gotten to date, but this will grow each week with new episodes dropping each Thursday. For comparison, watching the entirety of the anime One Piece, including movies, would sit you around 450 hours. Watching all of the Simpsons is a mere 275 hours. Watching all of Dragonball, Z, and Super will set you at about 230 hours. Remember, these other shows tend to be 20-25 minutes long. Critical Role episodes average between 3-5 hours *each.* The Chroma Conclave, these dragons, are easily the best examples of the terrifying power of dragons I have ever seen. I fear them more than I do Smaug or any of the Game of Thrones dragons. There are 5 members in total. Brimscythe the Iron Storm, a blue dragon with lightning breath was defeated last season. The remaining 4 are Vorugal the Frigid Doom (white dragon with ice breath), Umbrasyl the Hope Devourer (black dragon with acid breath), Raishan the Diseased Deceiver (green dragon with poison breath, also the only female in the group) and Thorak the Cinder King (red dragon with fire breath). Dragons in D&D grow more powerful as they age. Brimscythe was a young adult, at around 100 years old or so. These other 4 are *ancient* at each of them around 800-1000 years old. They are vastly more powerful than Brimscythe was. Each of the four ancients could be the main villain of an entire campaign in and of itself, but this show threw four of them in.
I love your accurate recount of LOVM/Critical Role. The sheer amount of content is mind blowing. I remember the days of getting bullied for being the "XXX nerd" who actually played the red and blue, and green and black boxes. The power level of ancient dragons (in that game...) is often focused on high level player moments- the implications of what they can do is beautifully explored here.
Out of curiosity, are those hours the total lengths of each episode as presented on youtube, or is it counting just playtime? I feel like at least half an hour of each episode is dedicated to pre-game messages and the mid-game break. EIther way, it's still a massive amount of content, and campaign 2 alone would still be longer than each of the other pieces of media you talked about.
Is it weird of me, that I hope that Vox Machina and Mighty Nein will then fill the void that One Piece will leave behind in a couple of years, hoping their adaptions will reach quite the length as well?
The Chroma Conclave are the most destructive and ruthless dragons I’ve seen in almost a decade. Thordak alone is like a nightmare fusion of Smaug and King Ghidorah! Rest In Peace Lance Reddick!
I think it was the watch party where Matt estimated 800,000 dead in that first attack alone. The cast said he looked almost shell shocked after that game, he said he'd just destroyed something he build.
Yup, it had been *years* of world building at the time. Nearly a year of the stream plus an additional few years of the private home game. Matt had built up Emon as well as the other cities the dragons are affecting this entire time, so Matt destroying it in such a catastrophic event was huge for everyone but especially Matt himself. He spent so much time designing and building this world and in one session destroyed it all.
800,000 makes more sense than 80,000. This is the capital of the entire continent, also Raishan probably killed entire blocks with her poison breath, with Umbrasyl dojng the same but less so. And then Thordak wipes out the core of the Emon garrison in that Godzilla blast. Also it'd have to be so many people dying for Vax to actually see the Matron of Ravens. EDIT: And when I say the Matrons of Ravens appearing, I interpret that less as her grooming him to be her champion, more that all of these people dying so suddenly weakened the barrier between worlds.
It’s more than just designing the characters and playing them in the traditional sense as an actor, they wrote those characters themselves. Their improvisation made all of the moment to moment choices which shaped this story. It’s theirs and only theirs.
Almost 80,000 and 1. He revealed in the wrap up that Gilmore was basically one less than stellar role from death. And i think he was actually planned for death though i might be wrong there
@@tycol322 Basically, afaik, they had the choice to loot his shop or look for him first. If they chose to loot first, he dies. If they choose to find him and don't roll a good DC, he dies anyway. They rolled successfully.
Very glad you have Jake there as someone who's part of the Critter community. Season 2 is gonna be very intense. If Season 1 was like the first Star Wars movie, this season is gonna be like the Empire Strikes Back. I recommend checking out Campaign 2 at the very least because that particular campaign has really good pacing with very clear arcs and I love all the characters.
While you aren't wrong, it probably won't happen on the channel (though if they did it on their own, that would be good too). It's a lot of content and their schedule is already pretty packed as it is, not to mention the Mighty Nein show has already gotten greenlit by Amazon. That said, I would love to see them tackle EXU Calamity. Its short enough to be its own weekly slot for a single month, and it requires minimal prior knowledge save for the context given by season 2 of Vox Machina. Only other additional information that could be helpful would be the Exandria Intimate History video, which is only 10 minutes long
We actually started recording our own DnD podcast, with a season arc entitled Hoard of the Cinder King, a mere two weeks after the passing of Lance Reddick, and so we dedicated the season to him, and hopefully we can honour his memory and legacy as a performer. Rest in power, Lance.
So happy to see you continue this! ❤️ And really cool with the addition of having someone who know the show, glad he mentioned the "19 doesn't hit" Travis' reaction to that really showed the realization of how bad their odds were
On the topic of not being able to keep up with the full campaigns. I 100% feel that. I'd suggest watching highlight videos of the episodes instead. You'll still experience the major moments of the campaigns, and its far less time-consuming. I'm watching "marisharaygun"'s campaign 3 highlights at the moment. They did the latter parts of campaign 2 as well. Its a totally valid way of enjoying the show if you don't have the time to watch the hundreds of hours of content :)
I feel this so hard. Before season 1 came out I decided I needed to catch up with the series, but I was only at about episode 80 of campaign one. I spent a month, *a month* watching an episode a day to to finish the series, then immediately went on to campaign 2... which I then burnt out on after another month and ended at about episode 40. I REALLY need to get back into campaign 2, but it's such a chunk of time, and once I get there campaign 3 is gona be looming over me as well!
Agreed. I've only managed to get completely through campaign 2 myself, not including some of the shorter specials. As much as I enjoy CR, I do have a hard time recommending it to people because it's such a time commitment. The notable exception is EXU Calamity. Not only is it short, but it's some of the best D&D I've ever seen played.
I would do this but I'm already too far in to start watching highlights. I watched the ENTIRE campaign 1 including extra episodes, and am in episode 110 of campaign 2. It has been a really long process. I think I've been watching nearly 2 years if not more lol. I know it would be amazing to be able to catch up and have the hype of waiting every thursday for new episodes, but at this point I'm so committed I need to watch this the old fashioned way. If that means campaign 3 finishes before I do then so be it.
I have the utmost respect for any GM who puts so much time and effort into building a living, breathing world with a unique culture and characters, and then absolutely crater it in a couple of hours
DEFINITELY watch the videos out here that show the moments in the actual campaign that inspired the scenes in the show. Very cool and interesting to see both the differences along with the style choices they went with to make it more visually interesting for the show
I actually have an answer for your run times discussion! I was really bored one day and entered all the episode times into Excel. Campaign 1 is a total of 450:33:57. Campaign 2 is 565:34:52. And Campaign 3, as of episode 68, is at 279:53. The total for all three campaigns (not including Exandria Unlimited or other one-shots) is 1295:28:42. There you go 🤓
31:00 That shot of the fire breath focusing down into a laser is straight out of Shin Godzilla, like almost exactly from what I remember. It works exceedingly well as a way to show how bad things are, and then stepping that up to an even higher level of "OH FUCK". Side note, please watch Shin Godzilla, it was great.
So excited that you're finally reacting to this! Not sure how far you guys are into the series at this point but it would've been nice to get y'alls reaction to Scanlan's season 1 recap
I was the Jake to my own friend group watching LOVM together! As the only one who had watched all of campaign 1, they all excitedly turned to me afterwards and asked questions. I was happy to add context, clarity, and fun facts. happy that the crew has Jake on their side for this season!
I shouldn't be surprised at this point but the range of voices Matt and Liam always amazes me. I mean Liams cutesy high pitched "cuddlefish!" To the calmer more average Vax to the deep gutteral meanace of Vorugal. And Matt pulling off the brooding devotion of Sylas, the phlegmy vileness of Umbrasyl and the eccentricity of Victor (who was made up on the spot). And that's just a small sample of what we've heard and will hear
Matt had great set pieces in all the campaigns but there was nothing like the Chroma Conclave showing up out of absolutely NOWHERE. People who watched the stream didn't even really get the backstory of killing the first dragon since it happened pre-stream. It went from the obligatory "quest giver announces the hook for the next plot" to "the king is dead and the apocalypse has started, run"
With Jake here, I really hope he has y’all watch and react to THAT moment of the campaign after episode 3. Laura’s real reaction to that organic moment is unbelievable
Yes! So glad you guys are doing season 2 now. It picks it up in every way. I agree with others, its cool having Jake there to give them some critter insight. And we're getting The Mighty Nein soon (hopefully) as well!
Ooooooh! This might be what gets me to join the Patreon for a month once all the reactions have been released for the Raw Rider tier. This season is so much better than season 1 in my opinion, and season 1 was already really good!
I swear you guys reacted to this back when it came out. I'm so confused could I have falsely remembered watching your reactions to an entire season...😂
Having Jake here is AWESOME! He just is saying exactly the things that cross my mind that I wish you guys knew about. The moment where Grog rolled like a 21 and it missed was so instrumental in how things progress that I was SO happy that he brought it up afterwards. So excited to have him going forward in this series!
Law and Order, with its 456 episodes at roughly 45 minutes each, lasts about 319 hours. The second campaign of Critical Role, with its 141 episodes at roughly 4 hours each, lasts over 556 hours total, with almost 484 hours of pure game time. The Mighty Nein is indeed longer than Law and Order, and it was worth every second.
Omg I just finished s2 like a week ago and now watching Campaign 1 and here you're uploading this! (btw never thought I'd enjoy watching people play DnD but it's actually so fun)
Been waiting for you guys to watch this since it came out. Also really glad you have someone who knows a lot about the world to help guide you through this amazing show.
Jake is a nice addition to the crew. I like how he is able to add things based on what they watched this episode (and last season), but more importantly is able to not say anything that is explained later in the season so the other three can still get raw reactions. :3
FINALLY!! This season is so good and I definatley reccommens watching some videos comparing animated series to campaign moments becuase they are so good and they really give people perspective and its really cool to see how they adapted those moments. Also, to note to you all, these came out in three episode batches and these first three premiered on my birthday...for those who know...know...
Months, months! As some sports reddits call it when free agency is hot and everyone ia refreshing the news for hours, it was "f5" season all night! So excited for the path ahead of you guys. Lots of shows say the first season was the weakest, and like Black Sails this one is only technically part of that trope! I think the every episode so far of season 2, and hopefully every other one to come; the snowball will get bigger and better just like the best D&D campaigns. A big win for western animation. Hope this show makes it to "live reaction" status one day, and I'm betting you'll emd up loving this season :) Here's to binhing the first 5 episodes now!
Interesting that they thought it was Keith David when it was Lance. Bungie just announced that Keith was taking over for Lance doing the voice of Zavala. RIP Commander

There you go 🤓
I just finished the intro, watching the reaction now and I'M SO FREAKING EXCITED! MONTHS WAITING!!! LOVE YOU! THANKS!
Man, this was such a strong start to season 2, and it just keeps going strong from here
Been looking forward to seeing this series return for a reaction. You guys are going to love this season. Jake is a great addition too.
Glad to be here.
So excited that you're finally reacting to this! Not sure how far you guys are into the series at this point but it would've been nice to get y'alls reaction to Scanlan's season 1 recap
I feel bad that you guys have such a busy schedule now, but thank you so much for watching season 2.
These episodes are as exciting as a *_FALLING GOLDFISH._*
If you know, you know
I mean when you a God whats the point.
If I don't see that moment animated, I will be devastated 😂
FINALLY. I'm so happy that you finally got to reacting to this, it's gonna be an absolute trip!
I'm so glad you got a critter to help on references for this season!! That's gonna be so cool. IS IT THURSDAY YET
With Jake here, I really hope he has y’all watch and react to THAT moment of the campaign after episode 3. Laura’s real reaction to that organic moment is unbelievable
Heck yes! I've been looking forward this reaction from y'all :D This season is a whole different vibe, you're going to have a great time!
The reaction I've been waiting for!🎉
Yay Finally! Glad to have a fellow critter alongside the crew. S1 was good, but S2 is so much better. RIP Lance Reddick. Excited for more!
Love this season! So glad to see you guys reacting to it
Jake is a Critter?! HELL YEAH
God, the lighting and colors are so good in this season.
YYYEEEEEEESSSSSSS! Season 2 goes off!
Edit: 22:07 Castle Gayskrull lol
It's Thursday night!
There is magic and mystery, who knows what will happen?
That’s not Jake the dog, that’s Jake, the dawg
😂❤
Oooo we have a Critter at the table! This should be an interesting watch!
YES, Finally! I have been waiting forever for your reactions to this season! This is going to be fun.
Campaign 2 is the best and I’m looking forward to the M9 animation!
I'm especially hyped for the shenanigans with molly
@@TTHBLOX_ shenanigans indeed! Taliesin really handed Matt a golden ticket on that one
Very happy to see this, even happier to see this on Thursday
finally season 2 lets gooooo!
Good to have a resident critter for this!
Im happy we're here. Cant wait for the rest of the series😊
As devastating and sad as it was seeing Emon fall, I was still shaking from the hype of Thordak’s huge blast. That was just unbelievably badass!
This season is so good. I would rank it in my top 5 shows I've seen this year.
This was an unexpected but delightful surprise! can't wait to see the rest of s2
Omg I just finished s2 like a week ago and now watching Campaign 1 and here you're uploading this! (btw never thought I'd enjoy watching people play DnD but it's actually so fun)
Yes, I was waiting for this!
Absolutely cannot wait for them to see the rest of this season. This show is so good, I loved it both as a fan of CR and as a show itself
Been waiting for you guys to watch this since it came out. Also really glad you have someone who knows a lot about the world to help guide you through this amazing show.
I'm gonna do my best.
"19 to hit."
"19 *misses.*"
Finally!! Glad your back on this guys!!!❤
i’ve been waiting for this for months!!!!!
Woo! Bring on S2. Welcome Jake!
Jake is a nice addition to the crew.
I like how he is able to add things based on what they watched this episode (and last season), but more importantly is able to not say anything that is explained later in the season so the other three can still get raw reactions. :3
I tried really hard to find the right balance so thank you.
@@JustJake91 You are welcome and don't worry, you are doing a great job! :)
Ah yes Blindwave, now it’s your turn to roll!!!! Enjoy 😊
so glad you guys are watching season 2
the red dragon is so badass
Sam Riegel's actual kids played the two who spy at the group around a door
Larkin Watch!
Perfect timing, i just got home from my d&d game to watch blind wave continue with vox 😀
FINALLY, IVE WAITED SO LONG
I'm so happy y'all are reacting to this!
It's about time!
Oh fuck yeah
IT'S FINALLY HERE!!!!!
It's going to be awesome having Jake here to give insights and explain some things for them.
I'm glad to be here as well.
Been absolutely dying for y’all to start this season. Absolutely peak television, an upgrade over the (also spectacular) first season in every way
Nice i just got done with your season 1 reactions!
Goddamn I was waiting for this one, glad we have it. I just want Owl House eventually and I'm good.
"Whose voice is that? It's amazing."
Me: "Oh no."
Rest in peace, Lance.
Interesting that they thought it was Keith David when it was Lance. Bungie just announced that Keith was taking over for Lance doing the voice of Zavala. RIP Commander
22:08: "Yeah, it's castle Gayscroll." - Top tier mispronunciation.
Lol the nerves of being in a reaction hit
As someone who has no experience with Critical Role (I watched season one of LoVM with my friend who is into DnD) I really appreciate Jake's knowledge
Glad I can bring something new to the table.
