- Here's my bare bones, backup, wilderness survival kit, small enough to carry daily on my keys! "Perfect" but bulky kits left at home are worthless if you don't have them ON you when disaster strikes, so it's best to EDC your kit. This kit is "5C Lite", plus more!
BUG OUT version: • MINI Bug Out Bag/Survi...
Ur first spy/survival kit years ago was the most amazing video ive ever seen. When i was little, i wanted to be a spy so bad. And i watched ur video RELIGIOUSLY and omg. I tried to make it too. I just wanted to say thank u for making and keeping that video
"WHEN you were little. . . "? I guess I'm still little. ha-ha! ruclips.net/video/u9MeRbk8rPw/видео.html
Great video! I think it’s fantastic for you to think outside the tiny box 📦 we hope it ever never comes to SHTF but better to be ready and have a plan 🤔 than leave it at home when you need it in the field 👍
What a fantastic micro kit.. thanks for the tip about the water bag from the vegetable section of the supermarket.. they are free and they hold water.. with one twist tie you can store water.. put the purification tablet in it and close it up with the twist tie what a fantastic idea thanks
Careful though, they happen to be watertight but I don't think they were meant to hold heavy loads so they can pop unexpectedly like a water balloon.
We are not worthy! Incredible work again!!
Thanks
Glad to see you again! Great video as always! I have never been a fan nor saw the point of mini kits or Altoids kits. However, after discovering your channel, I see them as totally viable stealth option or back-up to ones main kit. You got me collecting all sorts of small containers to try my hand at making some kits to fit my needs! Keep up the great work!
Stunning. Your creations are real artisanal masterpieces, impressively well thought to the tiniest detail. Way above every premade (and even military issued) survival kit. YOU should be in charge of assembling those kit, to give the guys a real chance if SHTF. Keep up the good work, it’s always inspiring to watch your videos
Thanks
When you said you had the 5C's in a much smaller TicTac container I thought to myself, "I've seen his videos, I know he's creative, but there's no way he got all those 5 things in there."
Well, shit. You proved me wrong. All hail the Zillch!
While I've never made any out and out survival kits using your tins, I have adopted the philosophy other ways- colds and flus tend to hit me hard and fast, and almost always when I'm at work or otherwise out. If you'v ever tried to move a mattress or a computer tower in the middle of a scorching hot day when you've got a fever, a raging sore throat and a throbbing headache, you'll know it's not fun. So I threw together a little EDC medtin with enough medicine, strepsils and multivitamins to keep me as happy as possible until I can get home to a bed. While the kit's probably not terribly helpful for corona, it's definitely saved the day from less nasty bugs a few times already.
Kit design should be done personally because we all have different needs/wants so only the individual using the kit knows what works for them. Thanks for your post.
I'm impressed! If you think about it you actually got 8 of the 10 Cs in there if you count the needle(canvass needle), duct tape(cargo tape) and mini glow stick (candal device). Good job!
King of Compact does it again!
Many many thanks!!! Dave Canterbury also has an extended 10C which includes: #6 Cloth, #7 Cloth Needle, #8 Candling Device, #9 Compass, #10 Cargo Tape. I think that your kit is 10C! Thanks again for your incredible channel. Best wishes from Ukraine.
Thanks. During my experimentation phase I tried tightly wrapping a bandana around the exterior but decided it looked funny. Ultimately I decided the bandana and even actually the paracord should travel separately. They can be tethered all together to make it all "one" thing you stuff in your pocket or bag, but putting all the layers on the exterior makes it hard to get to the interior quickly and easily and a survival kit should not be that way. A survival kit may be needed in an emergency situation which is dark, wet, cold, and one of your hands may be broken from the, say, plane/car crash you just experienced hence the need for the kit. The contents should ideally be easily accessible even under such adverse conditions.
Love u man, it may seem odd but Ur videos have gotten me through a tough few months, thank u
His videos are well made, and he has a nice, smooth voice. He helped me get through Covid lock down, too.
Finally!!!!!!!! Thank you master, this is like a gift for my quarantine in italy!
Just discovered your channel and binge watched about 8 of your videos so far. Outstanding work. Well done.
Thanks. Have fun.
I have always looked at duct tape as a cordage solution, not the best cordage solution but it fills that role a lot in a kit if you need it to. A very nice compact kit though, I might have to try something like this for a EDC car kit.
thank you Mike! Your videos are always received well!
When you said that was a 5c kit, I thought are you KIDDING me? Then when I saw you pull out an emergency blanket out of that tic-tac box, I was like what's that, a miniature space blanket? Noooo, it's real! lol You've got a subscriber for life. Thanks for your creativeness. I saw you turned the comments off of one of your videos, I think it was the one-handed modified mini-bic. Screw the trolls, they don't realize they're nothing. ,-)
Wow, great! You make EDCs out of everday things. Very budget friendly. Thank you
Nice video👍
Thanks for posting.
Best regards
Joe
I once made a survival kit in a 35 mm film canister
rewatched again. I really love this video and concept. BTW the glow stick gives you another C -- Candling - if I am not mistaken. and my prior comment about duct tape. I think it is one of the next 5 C's in canterbury system. So this kit is at list a 7 C kit. ... but you actually have another C also ... when you magnitize the needle you have Compass. So we are at 8 C's. Another see is Cloth Sail Needle. You do have a needle, bu it is small ... but the kit is lite. sooo I would give you another of C. so now we have 9 C. So can we get to 10 ... we can if you carry a cloth bandana on your person. So I think this is actually a 10 C Kit.
You should do an updated video and call it 10C lite.
Thanks for your suggestion on the water bags.. I actually use another type of water purification tablet that's much smaller.. I also remove the scales on my victorinox SD classic... You lose the toothpick in tweezers but still it can fit in a mini Altoids tin from my kit
Really Impressive. I didn't think you could do it but you managed to for a space blanket in there. Wow.
Clever. I adapted your produce bag for water, thank you. For shelter in my EDC I chose a good wire saw.
Thanks. Although slightly bulkier, I now prefer Oven Roaster Turkey Bags used to cook turkeys. They can accept boiling water temperatures whereas produce bags I assume would melt.
Careful with those wire saws. They get finger burning hot in use. Also they can bind, especially when used wrapped around a branch being sawed, so instead it is best to keep them taut in a straight line in use. Building a bow saw from one using a small sapling with deep notched sawed into the ends is often recommend to keep the wire in the desirably straight line; it is mentioned in several survival manuals I've read.
@@MeZillch I use them too, not always enough room for them, Wazoo Survival got me thinking about that application. Soon I will be uploading my own video of my Altoids Smalls EDC survival kit. It is extremely capable and can be carried, as it is right now, every day. Thanks for sharing, your videos are educational and entertaining.
Thanks for all the comments everyone.
Hey, umm, don't show pictures of your house or car keys on the Internet, people can easily copy them.
Absolutely love your videos, thank you !
@@edwardfletcher7790 Theoretically, perhaps, but my understanding is that of the hundreds of thousands of break-ins that occurred last year the grand total of ones done via "He left a detailed photo of his key on the internet and it got duplicated" is zero.
@@MeZillch I'm on some Lock review & Hacker channels. It's kind of a big deal in that community, so I thought you would want to know.
Just in case you drive a collector's item NSX or S2000 instead of the Civic I suspect you have ;-)
@@edwardfletcher7790 I don't even have that car anymore but even if I did, just knowing the key pin pattern doesn't tell you the internal RFID chip code it holds for the starter/ignition lock/immobilizer so at best it would only be useful to break in and steal my cheap factory radio. Plus wouldn't you need to know things like my name, address, what color Civic I drive, and what street I'm parked on? This theft technology, called "key teleduplication", is essentially an internet paranoid myth based on fictional TV show episodes. It is not that the technology doesn't exist; its that not a single incident of an actual car break-in using key teleduplication has ever occurred. Slim jims, tennis ball popping VW locks, door bending, coat hangers, smashing the window with ninja rocks, etc. works right in any crook's own backyard and they don't have to buy an airliner ticket for hundreds of dollars to travel across country to where I live, not that they even know my name/address/car color in the first place.

@@MeZillch You're welcome!
Look who's back :). How are you?
Kari Kovacs good THANKS FOR ASKING lolllll
I'm fine. Hope all is well for you and all my other YouTuve buddies. Stay safe.
@@MeZillch Stay safe, all the best to you.
Nice tic tac kit. In a next video could you show us how you folded the space blanket?
Excellent work well done. You actually have more in you kit then you think. I see the mirror as another cutting tool or shaving wood for more tinder, the water bag as a fire starter, it can also catch rain and collect from tree leavs . Great idea with the dental foss, good ridge line, very goos value video, well done
An absolutely incredible and well thought out kit! Definitely will be pinching some of these ideas for my daily carry! Thanks for sharing
Great kit as usual. Very ingenious. THanks for sharing them all.
Wow!! Impressive. Nice work. Just found your channel a day or so ago and just wanted to let you know I love it. Keep up the great work!!!
You should probably mark the amount the water tab disinfects on your water bag to take some of the guess work out of treating the water.
That could be done by filling a second water bag with the amount of water the tablet is intended for and making a mark at that level, then straighten that bag out again and lay a fresh one over it so you can transfer the fill line through.
Also, I´d imagine you´d massively buff your fire lighting capabilities with adding some sort of flame extender to the kit.
A birthday candle would already be a convenient source of light and warmth in itself, but for fire lighting something like a piece of waxed toilet paper roll/cotton canvas would be more usable, as they both can be fluffed up and ignited with just a ferro rod.
Some signalling items beyond the mirror and the ability to light fire might be useful as well.
TOPS and some other brands make very flat multi-tone whistles (more difficult to overhear between background noises like wind/ rain/ running water) that you could store on the outside of the kit under the paracord wrap, with the business end uncovered so that they´re usable without having to open the kit.
Another possibility would be a white LED (with intact long legs!) and two CR 2032 batteries. You can store them as components to save space, and when you need light you can assemble them into a light source with a strip of tape: either all around with both batteries between the legs of the LED so it shines constantly, or leave a space to bend one leg up so that it can act as a momentary switch.
Reflecting that lamp off your unfolded space blanket will increase its visibilty as a signal, but you can also reflect it from the folded up space blanket if you want to see better with it, e.g. by stuffing it back into the container in front of the space blanket.
You could also put the lamp assembly inside the container with some kind of opalescent material (the water bag or some tissue paper) around it to get more of a lantern that will also be seen better from all directions. If you tie that to the end of a string you should get a "buzz saw" that´s more visible than one you´d make with even a full size glow stick, and it adds movement to make it just that more visible.
Try a band of bicycle tube instead of the tape, you can tuck a few matches under it, and it burns well.
Love to see you back!
Quite creative and well explained. Just found your channel, will be watching more of your videos. 👍
Just found your channel. You have some of the best EDC ideas I've seen.
Correction: cargo tape is one of the 10c’s...duct tape/ gorilla tape is what Dave carries. Also you have a candling because of the glow stick and a down and dirty compass, (needle and magnet) so that makes of the 8 out of 10 which makes the kit even better. And if you changed the needle to a canvas sail needle you would have 9...the only thing you’re missing is the cotton bandanna...lol. Nice in a tic tac container! Are you making any more videos...I’ve watched all of them...they’re top shelf my friend and thank you! God bless. 🙏🇺🇸🦅🗽
Thanks. I still make videos but not often.
@@MeZillch oh good! 👍
Hey Zillch, it's geniunely heartening to see you upload again in these dark times. I've always wondered - have you got a background in engineering? Because a lot of this stuff is clever and ingenius enough that i wouldn't be surprised if you do.
Thanks. Not really. I have no official background in engineering but I do like tinkering with stuff, true.
When I have seen the foldable iron cups keyrings I have directly think about you making a micro kit with that container ;-)
A few thoughts: spectra 100 lb test fishing line superior to dental floss - superior strength/low weight/size. Water purification tablets not requiring boiling water. Chemical heaters - Thermacare has a 16 hr heater you can cut-up for numerous body locations to provide warmth. Triple antibiotic stored in 1" cosmetic container. Why no flashlight? Alcohol and bug spray stored in small cylindrical spray containers. I fold a PET 20 oz container w/cap for water. A plastic bag is easily punctured but useful if of sufficient size for numerous purposes. A real compass is far better than spending time magnetizing a needle, putting it on a leaf, placing it on a body of water and hoping to know where north/south are located. I have a few wrist band types that I mod. to achieve an even smaller device. What your tins do not support is a water resistant/proof breathable heat reflective bivy and tarp. Using your space blanket for a tarp is insufficient for practical coverage to prevent wind, cold wind, rain, snow and land/air critter penetration. If you hike in pine or spruce tree terrain, set it up under the tree. In a forested section no wind, minor snow and rain penetrates. It is also absolutely silent and the best place to camp. Otherwise, depending on the temperature you may need a hefty fire to keep you warm in cool/cold climates. But you won't get much sleep due to the need to tend the fire through the night. Unfortunately, those tins do not support a sufficient number of items and of size needed for survival. No disrespect however as you did a your best at the challenge.
Thanks, MeZillch. Your stuff amazes me! I'm going to try making one of those kits myself. And now I know what to do with that cheap dental floss that keeps shredding between my teeth.
Maybe a small whistle - they make 'em around the size of that glow light, maybe they can be stacked lengthwise to fit both. Essential for when your voice can't carry.
Yes, agreed, any good survival kit should have a whistle, but I usually have one on my EDC keys already. It is a small, aluminum cylindrical one I wrap with glow-in-the-dark tape so it doubles as my key's glowfob.
Your voice is so calming
I like the belt idea;you rap the paracord around the kit,and then slide your belt through it...
Thank you for all your videos! You have helpful, clever ideas.
Nice to see new stuff of you, This pack is special, it's a lifesaver thats work in the case it#s needed.
I feel as someone who uses a lot of small modified plastic containers and things, a 3D printer is something you would really benefit off! Feel free to message me if you need anything designing/printing!
Thanks but I feel like 3D printing is "cheating", ha-ha. The fun of this hobby is figuring out how to re-purpose existing goods rather than just buying or printing what you need. Once again, thanks though.
@@MeZillch Ay just an idea! Long time sub of the channel BTW. Have made many of your ideas in the past and still carry my parafob. Keep it up!
If anyone is interested, Tic Tacs now come in a slightly longer box option marked "65% more product, 100 mints", 1.7 oz. vs 1.0 oz, Maybe it will fit the longer space blankets? I suspect yes, with minor surgery on the lid with a razor knife [might I recommend my Mac 2 Razor Knife design for that, heh heh].
As always, lovely. Thank you for sharing.
Finally you're back!
The "squash tape" is a good idea. The plastic Tic Tac cases can be fragile and I've had them crack under modest pressure.
When stuffed with the space blanket they are nearly impossible to compress and pretty crack resistant in my use. They switched plastics at one point and are now PP (no. 5). A test drop from 7ft onto my tile floor caused not a scratch.
Dam bro. Still going? Nice. The bracelet wrap is premium
I have been waiting so long for a new video!
Amazing! You make such an incredible kits...
Do you sell those type of kits??
Thanks. No I don't sell my kits. My videos are meant to inspire people to build their own.
the little fish shaped bottles with cap containing soy sauce u get when you buy sushi are amazing for liquids or pastes or gels. screw cap lid u can shut that does not leak, they are clear so u can see how much u have left...fill using a 5ml medicine Syringe. also breath fresh its best to just get some listermint dry strips.
The small Light Stick you get for fisching .
Epic! Glad to be back after some time off.
Thanks for your video. About $280 for a personal locator beacon so you don't have to crawl for 8 hours with a broken ankle/leg? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Also, the older I get, the more inclined I am to reduce my kit to the absolute minimum. So, I only carry the bare essentials ("bare" is highly subjective, of course): contractor garbage bag, ziplocks with water purification tabs, full Scripto lighter, a couple KIND bars, and my current pocket knife and Surefire Sidekick pocketlight. Less than a pound and fits in a pants pocket. A few really solid 100% reliable and useful items in a ziplock bag that will get me through almost any emergency and are easy to deploy. Oh, and a PLB. ;-) And finally, I'm assuming you already discovered that cheaper mylar reflectorized "survival" blankets are almost worthless in a breeze because they shred very quickly. Everyone considering using one to save their lives should thoroughly test them first.
I don’t know what you mean by the Mylar blankets are bad?
Thanks😊
Y'know, the space blanket thing makes wonder, how much fabric one could squeeze into an Altoids tin :) . 'Could come in handy, for emergency clothing repair/manufacture
Edit: assuming the same dimensions as the blanket, I mean.
For Tic Tac storage a "Z" fold works best but for the slightly thicker Altoids tin, held clamped shut with a duct tape "squash clamp" at least, I use a "W" fold held tightly together with a taped band of paper like a cloth napkin ring, although it's a tight fit and won't stay shut without the outer squash clamp. I may make a vid about it some day. Even ignoring their heat reflective properties mylar sheets are great for tent building and rain water collection purposes; so they're great for survival kits. They cost less than a dollar each: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GCRWCG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
@@MeZillch Thanks. A video on this would be cool, when/if you find the time.
Squash Clamps, great idea!
This is pretty close to a Lite 10C kit, not to mention a 5C:
1. Cutting: Mack the Knife
2. Combustion: Ferro Rod (with knife striker), jute twine and cotton tinder
3. Cover: Space Blanket
4. Container: Plastic Bag, tic tac box
5. Cordage: Paracord, dental floss
6. Cotton: could use another small sheet somehow, but does have the tinder (usually doesn't count, but this is "Lite")
7. Cargo Tape: Squash Clamp of duct tape
8. Compass: Needle and Magnet (again, "Lite")
9. Canvas Needle: has a needle, though smaller than usually advised
10. Candling Device: Glowstick, albeit tiny
Thanks. Good points.
Duct tape is considered cordage, and it is also combustible.
That was nothing short of impressive.
I have made a micro survival kit in a snus/snuff box, you should try it out
It would also be nice to here cost on the content like knife and blanket so on. Thanks
I got my mini glow stick from lolipop(as the stick of course). They are very cheap and come with a whole box. Not sure if it's still avliable.
Thanks. Yes they seem to still exist: SNAP N' Glow Stick Lollipops on Amazon
Amazing video

great video, as always!
I have a small sling pack. I don’t carry it on me everywhere I go but it’s in my car. If I need it I can go to the car and get it. If you need to bug out you will have your vehicle right? I know this tin is supplemental but no sense in having something so small that it loses function in a real word situation.
This is not a bug out kit. This is a supplemental "hiking in the woods and you trip over a root, your backpack irretrievably tumbles down a cliff, and you break your ankle miles away from help or cellphone reception, kit". There was a survival kit designer who died this way having left his state of the art kit in his car because he didn't want to bother lugging it on his hike.
Personally I would never worry about putting a cutting tool in my survival kit because I'm never without at least one on me, and whatever is on me is going to be more useful than whatever you're going to fit in a kit this small.
If you can fit one without too much trouble then go for it, but if you have to buy something or get creative without taking up much space you could better use then just forget it.
If I fart in a Altoids container and seal it up really fast, when I open it back up will it still smell. Its first aid to wake someone up who is passed out.
I find the use of camouflage tape on a survival tin questionable. Seems like a good way to lose your kit if you drop it. Other than that I learned quite a bit from you and really appreciate your videos.
Generally I agree, however if you are "on the lamb", evading bad guys, or there's pirates that may raid your base camp and steal your belongings while you are away, camo has uses.
@@MeZillch That is a good point, and I agree with that. However I find that scenario more unlikely than just being lost in the woods, but you impressed me further with the dual sided nature of some of your duct tape "clamps". I like how you gave that option. You also did mention the difference between fluorescent colors and dark/camo colors, so I respect you for that. By the way, you so far have been the only person I have ever seen include a desiccant packet in a survival tin. That is such a simple but brilliant addition. You've been a true inspiration for me and it's sad that others doing these kits don't pay attention to you or at least take a page out of your book if they do.
@@Eidolon1andOnly Thanks!
@@MeZillch No, thank you. You really inspired and taught me a lot.
Hey! New vid!
So I’m seeing:
1. Cordage (Paracord, Dental Floss)
2. Cargo Tape (Orange/Camo Tape)
3. Container (Water Bag)
4. Cutting Tool (Razor Blade)
5. Combustion Device (Ferro Rod, TinderQuik, Twine)
6. Canvas Needle (Sewing Needle)
7. Communications (Signal Mirror)
(Also whistle on the keychain)
8. Compass (Needle+Magnet)
9. Candling Device (Glowstick)
10. Cotton (…your clothes?) Lol.
I only claimed it was "5C Lite+" but it does sort of come close to "10C", I guess. Thanks for pointing that out.

Like a treasure hunt!
survivalkraft channel has a way to make a “true flashlight” (actually seven of them). amazing solution to an often unavailable item in a micro kit such as this one. check his channel out
In an emergency situation you want to HAVE a knife, HAVE a flashlight, and HAVE a lighter/matches. Although knowing the means to fabricate this stuff is nice as a backup I personally don't think real survival kits should be based on relying on raw materials to fabricate these key devices because you have to assume your conditions are bad: car accident, broken hand, cold, windy, dark, etc.. Thanks for your post though. I'll check it out.
Nice fire!
I was homeless for 5 years strait, but I did it camping by the river in the woods (close enough to the city tho to survive), even then, im here to tell you, an altoid can full "survival" items, aint gonna get you very far if your lost for days in the wild, or simply camping like me....it may Give ya something to do while you wait to die I suppose..if your going out in the woods, take a backpack, .thats just my opinion, dont take it personally... 7:22
Wow, in addition to carrying a backpack you'd suggest additionally strapping to it a secondary backpack as your backup? I'd think that would be too heavy for me personally. As I state in the opening sentence of the notes: "Here's my bare bones, backup. . . " I never claimed this kit alone contains everything one needs to survive, indefinitely, but if you are of the mind the best approach for a backup is a second backpack, so be it.
Nicely done sir! One of my fav things that you do in these videos is the demonstrations I think it really ups ur game ahead of others. Keep up the good work, these mini kits are my new addiction lol. @MeZillch

MeZillch Or we could go back to Jane Austen’s time and curtesy and bow. 😃
well nice, but would you mind use it in the forest?
If all goes well I hope to NEVER use it much like I hope to never use my car's airbags. Having to open and use it means I'm in an emergency situation like I broke my ankle while hiking.
What size emergency blanket was in the kit, BTW? Thanks.
I looked through my Amazon buying history [a nice feature which comes in handy for times like this and why I often use Amazon] and it says the ones I bought in 2013 when I made this kit are 54 inches x 84 inches, so that's probably the correct answer but I can't be 100% sure. Unlike what I said verbally in the video the CORRECTED size in the on screen text mentions 4.25 X 3 inches is the folded size as they are packed by the manufacturer. I then folded that into a Z shape to stuff in the kit.
Where can I find that mini ferro rod ?
You may need to cut down the length with a hack saw. I bought my "mouse firesteel" at Going Gear: goinggear.com/products/mouse-firesteel-misch-metal-ferro-rod-blank-1-8-x-2?variant=27151259795556

As a suggestion you could write the addresses/phone number and any important numbers (encoded of course) because most of us use cell phones and if they break (mine got wet and I needed numbers of people, credit cards, driver's licence etc. and didn't know them) in sharpie on any surface in case you need them.
Yes, backup info that does not rely on electricity nor internet access is a good idea.
Duct tape is cordage.
Any updates, bud?

May i know the dimensions of the tic tac box? Thank you
A Tic Tac box is slightly tapered towards the base. Using a sealed one rather than the extended version necessary to accommodate a space blanket, the top cap outer dimensions are about 17mm x 46mm and it stands 72.8mm tall.
@@MeZillch im asking because in my country,i live in Europe btw the tic tacs box is 6cm tall ,1.4 x 3,6 if u could do a survival kit in that box it would be really cool. All the best, stay safe
This box is the smallest possible to carry a space blanket and ever then I had to make the lid stick out a bit.
