    It took me 4 years until my lovebird let me pet him. I respected him and thought he wasn't a petting type but he became a completely different bird after those years. All he needed was trust me and see pets are actually feeling very good!

    • @QuasiiiNominall
      @QuasiiiNominall 2 месяца назад +231

      Was he from a pet store? A lot of those birds are very traumatized by numerous things. Rather it’s dogs (predators) eyeing them down, constantly being forced to sleep under bright lights, and seeing your mate suddenly be ripped away from you by a giant net. You’re very social but a lot of your family suddenly gets taken from you and for the most part never get seen again.
      Not to mention the inbreeding and illness that’s so common in those places. I can’t fault a single one for having aggression or fear of anyone, let alone having years of depression and fear holding them back from fully trusting or craving new relationships.

      Thats the Point! Most people take pet for granted, thats wrong. They have a mind on their on, let them be, let them come, never force anything. If you respect their personal space, they'll understand and you get a flying best friend until their end! ❤

      @@ninetythree93they take a lot of time and energy, and they're LOUD. Their lifespans are much longer than you think, and you also have to make a ton of lifestyle changes: no nonstick in your home, no perfumes, no aerosol sprays or strong chemical cleaners, no painting your house with them still inside, no wall outlet scent things ect bc they're extremely sensitive to fumes and will die from them. Always making sure they're closed in before any outside doors get opened or while cooking to keep them safe - if they get sick or injured, avian vets are Rare. They WILL wake you with the sunrise, and screech. When you get a moment, check out the decibel levels for different parrots. I love my tiel, but they're very much not just cute moments.

      @@theyoftheravensThis must come from the new book where you forget they are wild animals as well ijs🤷. My grandmother had a parrot and never had its wings clipped and never needed to be locked up because he loved her and knew where his home was. He would come and go as he pleased and he always returned home. She cleaned her home as normal, air fresheners and all. She was a smoker and the parrot would just chill around her while she did manors of all things. I'm not saying don't take precautions but you make it sound like you need a degree to care for these animals when in reality as with most animals all you need is love, some time and food.

    Same with cats! Respecting an animal's wishes goes such a long way in reinforcing trust, my rescue kitty Apollo's pretty clear about whether he wants pets or no, or to be carried or not, and respecting that made him trust and warm up to me super quickly, not only that but it teaches you how to understand the animal better

      Oh yeah, my cat makes it very clear when he is okay with being handled and when he isn't. I can't always let him not be handled. So, on the petting thing... When I was a kid we had a cockatiel who was fine with being held but would draw blood if you got close to touching anything but his feet. My 9y/o self decided to wrap him in a towel (chicken burrito!) and pet the top of his head... and he LOVED IT. If his cage was open and I got a towel he would immediately fly to me. After taking him out of the towel he'd request head scratches by trying to touch the top of his head to you fingers. But by the next day he'd be back to biting unless he got towel time first. Weird bird.

    Understanding an animal’s body language can help SO MUCH in getting them to trust you. While I was away at school my mom adopted two cats, sisters. I didn’t get to meet them until weeks later during spring break. Ive only ever had dogs before but I knew some dogs need to warm up to you if they’ve never met you before. So I let them sniff me and pet them just a bit before backing off. When I came to pick them up sometimes they’d be happy but sometimes they’d push away and I’d immediately put them back down. I never forced cuddles, or uppies, or petting if I could tell they weren’t interested. I tried to read their body language as much as possible and act accordingly.
    I think because of this, they both imprinted on me HARD. More so than my mother for one of them, which is crazy because she’s known them for longer than I have. It’s been 2 years now and they’ve only grown more obsessed and clingy lmao. My grandma, who is SUPER old fashioned and was raised on a farm can’t understand why they I treat them like “people”, even when I tell her that they also talk to us, just in their own way. You just need to learn how to listen

    I am so happy you shared this video! My family bought a conure about 20 yrs ago, and my family were all so excited - but none of us had any experience with parrots and we didn't know anyone who did. It was really rough for a while, and very frustrating for both the bird and my family because we didn't know what we were doing. Sometimes things were good, but at other times it felt like our parrot had become possessed by a rabid, biting, loud, territorial monster. It took a lot of trial and error to figure out what the problems were and to learn bird behavioral ques. Now we have a happy older parrot who gets asked if he wants to come out of his cage, or if he wants a bath. He is in a cage that he really likes, he has a hammock he can sleep in so he no longer falls off his perch in the night, and he gets to spend his afternoons on our porch enjoying the fresh air. He spends a lot of time with me (his favorite person) and he sleeps in my room in the winter with the heating turned up (which he loves). All told, he is so much happier now that his boundaries are understood and respected, and his needs (emotionally, mentally, and physically) are properly met. Birds are quite different from cats and dogs in their disposition and reactions to things, and I am grateful that there are now content creators online who show what bird ownership is like, and what to look out for so that bird owners can actually understand and support their pets properly (hopefully without the rough learning curve that we had).

    Thank you for reminding people to respect birds’ boundaries and ask for consent. They are sentient creatures with their own wants, needs, and preferences. When you respect their boundaries, they trust you. This is how all animals should be treated.

    This is so important for every animal. We have earnt our shy rabbit's trust, by showing him that he has a choice and that we are safe. Your birds are so sweet ❤.

    I like your calm and gentle approach. Letting the birb make the decision is always the best way, which is a more positive route to gaining trust.

    I've also found that it's helpful to put an animal down as soon as they give any sign they want to be put down.
    Sometimes it's tempting to keep petting or holding an animal after they've started to show they're done, but always letting it be their choice builds so much more trust.. which results in wayyyy more interaction and affection :)
