    Cody, i put colored zip ties on my hydraulic hoses for quick reference on which side to hook them up to. Then i take a paint marker and put a small mark on hydraulic block on tractor so yellow hooks to yellow, white hooks to white. So on and so forth. Been farming for 40 years and that makes it fast and simple for me.

    Food Forest! I love these, Lawton, Perkins and a few others have me and the wife convinced this is something we are interested in if possible where we settle. My mother is a long time Horticulturist. When I showed her his work a few years back, we have been on a mission to get the family moved to some land and begin land management to do similar processes to help abandoned pasture land. For years I planned to buy wooded land. But since seeing his work on erosion and good land management has us realizing we can get old pastureland and reshape it to hold water and build food forests. My mother is chewing at the bit to break out her landscaping table on this project. So wonderful you guys are going to bring your land back to life with good forestry, land and water management. Design the Utopia that will last generations and repair what our forefathers ignorance has done. As usual you guys are an inspiration!

    Hello Codi, I am a silent viewer of your work and this subject about watershed management is very close to my heart.
    I very impressed that you too have now started to work on water shed management on your homestead.
    Presume, you would have already researched it, but if not look at building Loose Boulder Structures. Contour bunds and Gabion structures all which work in concert, to slow the flow of water and trap valuable silt.
    If you have beavers on your homestead, they would additional help to build these structures.
    All the best to you and your family

    You should seed that waterway with birdsfoot trefoil. Our ditches kept washing out/away. This grass is the same thing the DOT seeds on the various embankments for highways they repair/construct. It really holds the soil firmly and stops erosion.

  • @bjwillis43
    @bjwillis43 7 лет назад

    Nicely done. One little trick that I do to slow erosion in a freshly made gully, much like the one you just made, is to place a couple unopened bales of hay or straw across the gully every 50 to 100 feet (depending on steepness of the slope). This creates a natural dam that slows the water flow and allows sediment to fill in behind the bales. By the time the bales decompose there should be enough fill that you won't need to add new bales.
    Over the past couple years I have enjoyed watching you convert from construction worker to farmer. We all have room for improvement but, I'm enjoying the ride (so to speak).

    I love land rehab jobs, well done!!! One thing we do on the road jobs is track the excavators up the batters, the tracks create pockets for the seed to get caught in so they don't get washed off in the rain. Might be a bit different with the rubber as opposed to tracks, but could be something to consider. Anyway, keep going - loving the videos (as always)

    Suggestion, with the quick disconnect ends of each hose pair, one should male, and the other female. This does 3 things.
    --First motion is always the same, i.e.: pulling back on the lever will always be spin left...
    --Second no hose caps to loose, to protect the connectors from contamination, dirt and damage just plug the pairs together
    --Third when you wanted to offset, just connect the pair and push the arm over manually and then disconnect to lock.
    Keep up the great work.

    So, I had a chance to meet Cody and Mrs Wranglerstar at the Mother Earth News Fair in Burlington, Vermont. I live in Ottawa, Canada and this is the closest they have ever come to me, so I had to drive down. I enjoyed Cody's presentation on traditional tools and got a chance to speak with Mrs. W and Cody after the presentation. I was so impressed with both of them. They are exactly the same in person as on video. I think that is why I enjoy their RUclips channel so much and why I have basically given up on TV. They are genuine, real people. What you see is what you get! The people on TV are fake. I think more and more people are waking up to the fact that most of what we see today on the TV is made up, acted, scripted, and manipulative. The Wranglerstar channel is REAL reality programming. I would have loved to sat down and had a couple of hours to talk to them. Unfortunately, there were a lot of other people waiting in line to talk to them too. I did manage to get my pencil and it will have a prominent place in my workshop. As I mentioned to them, 1) Keep the comments open and ignore the haters. I love the interaction on the channel. 2) Keep doing the explanation videos. I really liked the one where Cody showed Mrs W what a PTO was and how to attach implements. I am sure I am not the only guy who didn't know that and was too embarassed to ask. So many questions, so little time. I hope to meet you again soon. Thanks for the special autograph Mrs W! - Kerry

    I recall stories of farmers in California trying to dam up their fields so that snow melt and rain fall would stay there long enough to be absrobed into the ground to replenish their ground water. A long term solution that will work for them rather than trying to just dump the water somewhere else. I've also read that If california had been thinking ahead they'd be in a much better position w/ regard to water.

    Just an FYI what you made is not a swale. A swale is on contour and is designed to fill with water before it overflows into another swale down grade and so on.
    the work you did was great but it is basically a stream bed, to improve its performance put some rows of stone across the ditch every 20 feet or so. The rocks will slow the water and prevent erosion.

      Steven Holmes That isn't what a contour swale is in the permaculture buisiness, it holds water and lets it sink in...not built for water removal, but built to hold the water...wish ol' wranglerstar would take a course on permaculture or just buy the book by Mollison;-)

    @dpower02 7 лет назад

    Yes the straight blade is a good tool but once those levelling tasks are done the bush hog will be the tool used the most, most likely well besides the tiller, good job on the swale one thing you may want to check is the bush cutter to see if the main cutter is going to scalp the crest of the swale may want to grade it to suit the cutter, you may be ok with the side aux cutter ability to drop down. The most work I have done with the straight blade is road trail grading, it takes awhile to grade a road to crest the center, but after a few years you can have all your roads and trails 2 straight blades wide one going one coming crested in the middle and the water runs to the side, you don't really need a ditch most water will soak in sooner or later and its easier access with bush cutter to keep clear if no ditch. A good trail/ road construction guide is to have your roads 2 straight blades wide and clear ditch with one width of cutter clear on each side, if you can do all of that around your woodlot you won't get the F250 stuck anymore. You could of done that swale with the box scraper as well I think you forgot that the box scraper stays level as the wheels so if your wheels are one in swale and one on the crest the box scraper will do the same job and most box scrapers have the drop down rippers that assist in getting material to level. There is another sweet tool that is a gem that you should try is a front mounted blower, see if Yanmar have a mid mount pto kit and will supply the front mount blower, ask for a Provost or Econor made in Quebec, made to handle snow.Every kid should be able to have a 50 hp farm tractor and implements to play with...

    Look into Keyline plowing, my preference though is for ditching and directing water to pond sites, especially locations where the water can gravity feed the gardens and livestock. I think that perhaps a better more descriptive word would be swales (more sophisticated than ditching). Hate to tell you that the permanent solution to water retention (preventing runoff) is livestock (management intensive grazing) and planting (as you mentioned) riparian areas. See Darren Doherty Regrarians.

    2 things1 I'm jealous of the black dirt! Looks awesome! We grow rocks in Missouri!2 Could you use a set of hydraulics off the front end loader if your not using the bucket for anything? Might have to have a set of hoses made?
