I have spent the last week explaining Gorillaz storyline in a facebook group about animation. Everyone is getting mindfucked, specially the people that didn't even know about the band before.
Actually, that text messaging to Murdoc system actually reveals that Murdoc was a part of The Gangrene Gang. He got to know Ace and they became pals so when Murdoc was being arrested he notified Ace to take his place as bassist while he was locked up.
Cynthia Niccals I just checked myself, Murdoc says that Ace "Used to be a big player in the Gangrene Gang." And that he and Ace go "way back, but that's another story…" So while they have a history, there's no confirmation Murdoc ran in the same gang Maybe they have a force-bond, like Rey and Kylo Ren :P
For you people who had no further interest in Gorillaz and didn't conduct any further research new info had been released that Murdoc's in jail and Ace is his replacement.

You didn't mention the amazing fan animated video for Rhinestone Eyes. Like seriously. It's amazing! They guy spent 6 years animating it and following the animatic to a T. It might as well be the official video for it. Good job on the thorough explanation though.
As an avid fan of Gorillaz, this is a surprisingly very accurate video! I like that you just completely ignored DoYaThang since it's generally taken as non-canon. Though, I do have a few quick notes. One, Russel only punched Murdoc once during the whole Paula thing. Two, you kinda skipped over the fact that 2D's hair is blue because he fell out of a tree as a kid, it's another weird factoid. Three, I believe it's confirmed that Boogeyman died during Plastic Beach at the hands of someone named the Evangelist, it's another thing that we lost when Phase 3 ended early. Maybe. Phase 3 is really murky waters, no pun intended. I really like the way y'all did this video, now onto the rest of Phase 5, it's probably about get really weird again.

Even though I'm a hard core Gorillaz fan, it was nice to refresh myself on the story because it is confusing and I do need help remembe ring bits of it at times. Also, Superfast Jellyfish and Plastic Beach are the best. Not sure I have to say my favorite member.
I have a theory why the new album is how it is with Ace. I've been a huge fan of the Gorillaz for a long time and I came to the conclusion that Murdoc always has his turn on the albums for a more "heavy" song (as in Murdoc is God or White Light). In those songs there's always a lot of Guitar and just some tunes made for headbanging. But in the album The Now Now there is no song like this. It's all funky and spacey, not aggressive at all. You can listen to it and just relax throughout the album. Maybe it's because Murdoc isn't there. Also The Fall doesn't have too aggressive tunes (besides the Joplin Spider) and maybe that's also because 2D kinda worked alone on the album..? So my conclusion is that without Murdoc as a band member, 2D gets more to decide how the new songs will sound like because he doesn't have Murdoc as an abusive boss. Maybe Ace also likes these funky sounds and that's why the album is so much more chill without Murdoc.
yes i can confirm, ive heard other people say that without murdoc around to bully and manipulate 2d, his mood changes and he has more independence, explaining his now white 8 ball fractures. also this is hinted in the lyrics of humility, and you can see his "mood change" when his eyes go from white back to black after being tripped by russ in the music video.
Favorite song is a toss between Dare and Tranz. Favorite member early on was Noodle, but I've grown to love Stew's quirkier moments. I don't mind Ace, but I'd love to see Murdoc come back and tear him a new one; or at least smack 2-D around for the band replacing him even though it was probably Russel's decision. I hope the show continues from present, maybe with a recap episode at the pilot, covering everything up to this point.
Got the album, playing cards and t-shirt on pre-order. I am so pumped to get it all tomorrow! I admit to being a huge superfan who considered getting the deluxe vinyl set just for the extra swag, as I don't own a vinyl record player but soooo want the notebook, art cards, and badges.

watching this in 2021 so here's some updates on the lore!! - the now now was released, ace being the bassist for it, and now there is a new album called "song machine" which seems to be a series - murdoc has been out of jail for a couple years now and the new videos and other content seems to hint that he's trying to patch up his relationships with the band. - cyborg noodle is alive and at the bottom of the ocean near plastic beach, this information is found in the "the lost chord" music video from song machine, which also shows plastic beach get destroyed and addresses a lot of the trauma that plastic beach caused. - 2D might be under hypnosis??? his eyes are white now and there are hints in videos and other content of him that he is, in fact, being controlled somehow there might be more but this is what i think goes with this video!

Thanks for making this explanation video. I'm naturally terrible at interpreting songs (even when I can tell what's being said the first time), and Gorillaz has a strange story I wanted to know about. Of course, I'm late, but I'm gonna try and get a list of these songs in order to listen to.
It makes me sad that everyone gives credit to Damon Albarn for the music on gorillaz but no one realizes he collaborated with many other producers and beatmakers for all of the albums. Most notably dan the automator, dj kid khoala, and del the funky homosapien (Deltron 3030) for the first gorillaz album and danger mouse for demon dayz

I remember that I found out about them because of a magazine article that talked about their story (Just phase 1 because that was all that had happened back then). I was in elementary school.

Thanks for making this explanation video. I'm naturally terrible at interpreting songs (even when I can tell what's being said the first time), and Gorillaz has a strange story I wanted to know about. Of course, I'm late, but I'm gonna try and get a list of these songs in order to listen to.
It makes me sad that everyone gives credit to Damon Albarn for the music on gorillaz but no one realizes he collaborated with many other producers and beatmakers for all of the albums. Most notably dan the automator, dj kid khoala, and del the funky homosapien (Deltron 3030) for the first gorillaz album and danger mouse for demon dayz
