Kurdistan: Erbil Deaf School

Joel visits a Deaf school in Erbil, Kurdistan, Iraq. He is impressed with the school having Deaf teaching aides working with hearing teachers. There are Deaf adults are making handicrafts, items of clothing, and painting professional artworks. (captioned)

The Greek historian Xenophon in his Anabasis book talks about the Kurds “Kardouchoi” in 401 BCE[1]. They had formed their own societal system.
- It means Kurdish are on this area thousands years before Turkish!!!

Are they using ASL?

All of them are using Iraqi (Arabic) sign language. one lady knows ASL since she was in the U.S. for two years. Hope it helps.

@@JoelWestBarish Great video. Why aren't they using Kurdish sign language (ZHK)? I live in Sulaymaniyah, a couple hours away from Erbil, I'm starting working with the deaf here, so I'm curious.

Us Kurds like Americans. You can eff off with that American hating bs. Americans helped us get rid of that tyrant genocidal Saddam who used to go around killing Kurds and torturing us. You want to talk about Iraq being broken? It was broken the moment it was created because the British purposely drew it's boarders randomly over many ethnic groups.
