This video was as informative as it was fun! Love that mom got to try a dog & your cane! (Mom wasn't too hot with the cane!) It was cool to see the Try Guys try your cane, too. I watched their video first with them trying guide dogs. I like how the trainor talked about the school's program, and you talked about differences between schools. As a sighted person, I would never think about the work you would have to do to learn new commands and rules for a different school! 💘

My brother is going blind, and for now glasses (special and very expensive glasses) are working for him, but one day they wont. Over the summer he told me that for the first time he really felt disabled and that he was scared about the future, and the only thing that cheered him up was that he would be able to get a guide dog. He talked about how alone he can feel sometimes, because he can be left out of things, but having a buddy would help, and it really hit me how much they’re also inherently emotional support companions too. Seeing you get emotional about missing your Ben reminded me of that, and I am just so glad you’ve now found your new companion.

Any kind of drastic change such as vision loss is always rough and scary. This is why it is important that we have conversations about disabilities such as blindness, because, although they are scary, they are part of the human experience. Part of the fear comes from so many misrepresentations of disabilities over the years, and a lot of that is because of media.
When your brother needs it, there is a huge community of very supportive people to help him. Also, it is great that he wants a guide dog in the future. I would encourage him to begin learning, non-visual techniques, now if he hasn't already. While this will not necessarily illuminate the grief and loss, it will better aid him as the approaching vision loss happens. He will need to learn how to travel non-visually using a white cane and develop good orientation and mobility skills.
It is actually really interesting that so many guide dog handler's do rely on their dogs for emotional support. I am not one of them, not with my current dog. He is a wonderful worker, and does his job very well, but not the dog I would ever choose to have strictly as a pet, and not the dog, I would turn to for any kind of emotional support. Each relationship is very different… When he retires, it is highly unlikely that I will get another guide. But wherever your brother ends up getting his dog from, I wish him all the best. I remember when I got my first guide dog 23 years ago… It was a very memorable and incredible experience.

I don't know if this is possible, but if I were in his situation, I would probably try out a guide dog just like the Try Guys did in this video, BEFORE going blind. And I would definitely try to learn accessible technology before going blind as well. I've tried out voice over myself and it's just SO much easier to learn as a sighted person than as a blind person. I'm not actively going blind myself, but my grandmother gradually went blind in her sixties and seventies and so did her mother, grandmother, and five of her aunts and uncles, so my family's always been fairly conscious of the fact that it's quite possible for any of us to go blind even if we grew up and go our entire careers sighted (with correction).

I am a former puppy raiser at GDA, so amazing to see just some of the developments and changes they have made it that time. Being a puppy raiser was hard but it was also one of the greatest joys of my life. Having that experience is one of the reasons I have been such a fan of Molly, I love how vocal she is about the impact a guide dog can have on one's life. Such a great collab too

I love that not only did Zach and Kieth try out a guide dog, but so did Mama B! Also I love that Molly also got to try one out and got to see the similarities and differences between a GDA dog and a MIRA dog. That and Zach and Mama B tried the cane too! This is such a cool behind the scenes video.

It is so amazing to see how you can adapt with a lack of a sense. Watching Molly navigate so easily behind her mother was so fascinating because her mom was so out of her element, and even with Molly and her cane which she doesn’t prefer seemed to navigate with so much more ease.

When I was a kid, I went to an open house at GDA and I got to see a bunch of puppies at different stages going through testing. There was also an activity where I was chosen out of the people watching to be blindfolded and guided around obstacles by one of their trained unmatched guide dogs. It was a very short course, nothing like this, but over ten years later I still remember the feeling of putting all of my trust in a dog to keep me safe. I'm glad your mom and the try guys got to see what that feels like!

I know that on their video, a few of us were answering their fans' questions about you (how you don't "look blind", you make visual contact with people, the spectrum of blindness, how you feel colors, etc), so a new video could be a great source of info for them

One of my disabilities is mobility. I started with a walker, and got my own manual wheelchair for occasional use. When I got a cane I was slower but could get into more spaces. I went to Rocky Horror dressed as Dr Scott and loved it! I put my chair in the alcove but used my cane to sit with my friends in the regular seats.
