From all accounts this trip to the North Pole is the most challenging and dangerous trip I think you've ever taken. I was actually in fear for your survival. You did a fantastic job of getting as much info as you could as well as share your personal experiences. I thought after the book tour you would take it easy in some tropical destination but you literally did the exact opposite. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that you do surprising things. I hope you've thawed out and you're safe back in Paris sitting at a cozy cafe sneering at the tourists.

20:30 Probably adrenaline. Your heart is racing and you're ready for anything at a guttural/instinctive level. That's why some people get hooked on/crave "crazy" or "dangerous" experiences, they want that rush. It makes sense that we'd feel most alive in those times because we are primed by the release of adrenaline to preserve and "fight" for our lives, so we're more in tune with living.
@@damondominique Ah, how cool! Gonna re-watch that part - she seems like the best; I wish more online personalities were as authentic, informed and well-spoken as she is; truly a role model for young girls/everybody!

Damon, since you talked a lot of about death in this video, I highly recommend the book "A morte é um dia que vale a pena viver" by Ana Cláudia Quintana Arantes. She's a Brazilian doctor who works with palliative care (taking care of pacientes who have a terminal disease and are in an active process of dying). I dont know how rusty or not your Portuguese is (lmao), but this book is so thought-provoking I think you would like reading it.
Sitting on the floor of your dorm with a little snack saying out loud to absolutely no one "I really almost died today huh" was also my experience visiting the Arctic 😂😂
I'm very interested in bio-inspired design specifically because I lean more towards being a nature person, but I'm an engineering major and an artist so I will always be passionate about human creation. I think your theory definitely holds some weight!

I love nature but it´s kind of easier to find happiness in the city. But once you take your time to appreciate nature - mind blowing gratefulness. I love going to raves, sipping cafe, wearing cute fits, drawing, painting etc but I also like a good lay in the grass or swimming in a stream, admiring trees, human kind, beautiful buildings from the 1800 idk. I think the real extremes here would be people who love cars, beton and metal instead of all that u kno?
Okay, so I'm from Finland and this is only speculation, but maybe the prices are higher because workers here aren't reliant on tips to get by. Paying everyone a liveable wage and a tax system means higher prices. Also general income in Norway is quite high I think, so the prices reflect the wealth. The blinds thing I think is just a quirk. There's no reasoning behind it. I keep my blinds often all the time because I like looking out of my window haha
Yooo the cinematography tho 😭🙌 Btw the last bit of your video kinda reminded me of city rat and village rat story? Swede here, Tromsö is actually in the arctic circle (northern Norway, northern Sweden and northern Finland are all in it). And the curtains thing, I think it's the opposite, we wanna make sure we get all of the sun (like in the morning), and just let them be. If it's dark you don't really need to block out the sun to sleep. But everyone is different.
I think that most of the stars in the sky we see are in our galaxy and we're moving with our galaxy (????) and any other relative movement between stars and stuff is so small to our naked eye bc its like THAT far away from us 🥶
I love finding the balance of city and nature. Both are so important and can fill your cup. It depends a lot on the vibe I have for a trip, where I am or the time I have.
Alternate video title: Fear and Loathing in Svalbard. I’m getting Hunter S. Thompson and Werner Herzog vibes from this vid. Hunter was a print guy and did too many drugs, but Damon could definitely be the next Werner Herzog. Instead of doing a Netflix series, maybe Damon could do documentary feature films like Herzog. Damon is one of the few doc filmmakers who has a personality that is as big as the movies he makes. Herzog’s movies were always about him and that’s why they were so interesting. Damon has a similar larger than life personality. He should always lead with his personality. Brand is everything.
This was such a masterpiece to watch!! Totally behind the nature vs human made theory - i’m more of a city girl and I spent a while in Washington state which is definitely more nature people. it taught me to appreciate nature way more and now I crave trees more than before but ultimately i’ve found my best friends and most fun in city-like places. It’s nice to push yourself to appreciate the other side though.
Loved the 'Damonisation' of a Svalbard travel vlog, so refreshing and superbly entertaining. Coming to your nature vs city question, I think I like a bit of both. Being out alone in nature makes me appreciate simpler things in life like listening to the birds or water running down rivers, and being in busy cities makes me appreciate the culture, the food, imagining life as another person. I do tend to start missing the other option if I'm doing one kind of travelling for too long.
