I make my turns in the road which results in grass being left. Because of the typical amount of vehicles passing by my beautiful yard to check it out, the grass is gone within hours. I also wear shorts and yes I get grass on my lets and boots. My deck is a mulching mower, double cut until clippings are gone. Good video...
13:20 at my company we sometimes ride the scag mower around a couple laps with a blower on our back, and just blow lightly along the top of the grass to fan out those thicker clumps while the mower goes over the grass a second time. Gotta be good with your steering one handed tho lol.
You mentioned not being a big fan of raking a yard, and neither am I. Have you ever used a lawn sweeper? Those things are awesome dude! If you haven't, you should!!
Many people don't realize that when you mow grass and the clippings go into the street, it's hazardous for motorcycle and bicycle riders, they loose traction on the grass clippings.
@Al 6r God help you if you ever ride in the fall! If you can’t handle a little grass or pebbles maybe you should stick to HOA neighborhoods or get a car; you definitely don’t need to be on a bike😅
@Al 6r Been riding all my life. Mostly dirt, but at 70 had to give it up. Grew up riding in the country with gravel roads and cornfields. No insult intended; just pulling your leg like old farts do😄
I generally run around the perimeter before I start with back and forth. I run a 54" so that's overc4 ft. That usually keeps me safe. I do have a chute blocker. I wear long pants/ shirt and earplugs everyday. I have work glasses with side protection and they become sunglasses.
the "people around" is one that grinds my gears. All of my clients are informed of when I'm coming the day before, and some of them, as soon as I cut the mower on they want to come outside to start doing chores, play or grill.
Yea some even think I'm entertaining them if it's that cool pay me lots more money also they walk right up on me and startle me and have no idea how powerful and how dangerous it is occasionally a rock I can't see or branches will be flung after 30 years in the business have taken out 3 glass doors with rocks I could not see twice with gas driven edger once within a trimmer but no one has been hit I shut the blade off when fools get to close scary how people have no clue how dangerous getting to close to your power equipment is
I hit a stick, stick hit a car. Small ding. Cost me $100 for the paint less dent guy to come get it out. Took him 12 minutes. I am now in the paint less dent repair business.
It happens mate. Been in 17 years for me, I think I've broken a window on a car once. Company has it covered, can't prevent it all, I even narrowly missed a car from damage just by pure luck, a golf ball that was hidden in the grass shot out from underneath the deck and missiled towards a car and went over the top of it, I actually lost where it even went.
Great video mate. Enjoy your site. I have a lawn mowing business in New Zealand. Great points here, most of which are common sense, but some people dont have that. Keep up the good work.
Thanx Jason. Sometimes I walk backwards when I edge. Also I always blow the porches because I feel I’ll get blamed for whatever is on that porch floor.
I try to avoid throwing clippings on the sidewalk or road. If you don't make a mess then you don't have one to clean up. And it saves a lot of time in the day.
Not only blow off the porch/patio, but the furniture/chairs etc. Debris is going to get in there and the last thing a customer wants to do is have to clean off their seat to sit down after they paid someone to service their property.
Details Details Details l do all of that if there is debris in the street gutter we sweep it up. Some of my competitors hate me for it but I keep my clients because any one can do the job but it takes a pro to do it right
lol - lots to unpack so I will hit just a few 1- I work in shorts...it's 100 degrees and I don't care how much crap my legs eat 2- If I don't slow walk it backwards when edging I eat the debris 3- I tried glasses but I sweat sooo much, I literally would have to stop every 15 seconds to wipe them off. Safety squints for me 4 - Bi weekly yards full of grassy weeds? You get side discharge and some clumps. Sorry. Usually these folks don't mind.
I make every-one of these mistakes and I don’t care. It’s grass. I’ll just dump the customer if they complain. They can pay double for someone to sweep the trimmings from their driveway. You’re totally right about wearing eye protection, but I do most of my mowing with flip flops.
I was 13...working my favorite lesco 48 belt drive. Brand new best Western contract. Well hidden nail hit blade, window was gone faster than I could blink. I was a kid man....I wrote an apology and mailed $3,000 for a new window. I bailed that day. I snuck out the back of the field 😆 I thought I was done for, got a call from the manager a few days later. They wanted me back, and refunded the money. They were laughing at me ducking and weaving between trees to leave on the camera.
When my yard gets away from me like when I was in the hospital, I cut the yard normaly but slow leaving rows of piled grass. Wait 3 days and do it again after it dries out cutting 90 degrees to the last cut and it's acceptable to me. I feel like I could cut it all day long and it still not look good. After drying it's a different story.
Overalls suit love my jump suits and boots might as well say gear in general it keeps the grass clippings off me when I use my equipment people can see me when I'm working close to getting dark out side so neighbors can see me when they drive by so I don't get hit by a car or a vehicles even though I look both ways when I cross the street if I had to weed eat at dark right be for the sun goes down if that's smart I even were a mask when I weed eat to so I don't breathe all of that debris in my lungs because I have asthma
I cut some pretty hilly lawns and there are a few that for safety's sake I have to turn around in the drive. That's why I like blacktop driveways better than concrete, can't nobody hardly see your tire marks. Lol. And as far as shorts... if I know I'm going to be doing a ton of trimming or in an area with poison ivy, ect. I will wear pants. Maybe long sleeves. But most days nah, shorts and a tee. I cut off a finger last year and didn't flinch, I'm not worried about some rocks to the shins.
Here in Georgia, it can be a choice between heat stroke and a few cuts on your shins and arms. Ill also wear long sleeves and pants if I know Ill be getting into something nasty or if its a relatively cool day.
Making sure you are mowing with sharp blades will ensure the best possible manicured look after completing a job and also help "mulch" dispensed clippings if you are not using a bagging mower. Dull blades tend to "break" grass rather than cut it and "dull" the overall look of a lawn the next day because the tip of the grass blade turns brown. Keeping blades sharp makes them last longer as well. Quality landscapers consider daily blade change-outs part of their regular maintenance routine before starting out each morning. A chain hoist and impact wrench with a stack of backup blades make this job much easier and faster each day. All blades can be touched up and balanced on the grinder at the end of the week. When the metal has a "dip" (not straight across) on the business side of the blade, you are waiting too long to sharpen. Of course, always try to stay out of the sand. Sand will destroy your blades quicker than anything I know. A sharp blade is the rule on a 20" walk-behind as well as your 60" Z-machine.
Hubby hit a rock about the size of a baseball, chute was up, it went thru the window, across the room and punched a big hole in the plaster. The glass went everywhere. He had no idea it happened either until I went into that room and I was just baffled where all this glass came from. So it can happen, I'm glad it was our house and not a customer's.
Yeah you covered pretty much all the bad mowing practices , but I hate when I have a line of multiple houses to do and some fertilizer pesticide guy jumps in front of me and sprays one of the lawns...Also hate when the customer runs the irrigation every day especially when they know you are coming .that day...They charge for water uses in some developments so people avoid the cost by installing a well just for irrigation...Almost without exception, everyone who has one of those wells overwaters and it ends up hurting their lawn.
Had a friend wearing shorts while weed eating and hit some dog crap. If thats not bad enough, it got into a cut on his shin from a stone and he got a really bad blood infection...wear long pants!
One more cringe worthy moment to me is dads and granddad's riding their small kids while mowing. Mowers and tractors are not toys and can change lives in the flash of an eye! Stay safe!
A really annoying thing is not using your legs correctly for the job. Using the snipper and not moving your legs, I see one guy at work stop every 2 steps and swing it around way more than needed. Keeping your legs moving is ideal as the stop swing move method really stuffs up your back, & slows you down.
Drives me nuts when hacks blow grass into beds and edged concrete. I'm a homeowner, it isn't a trash moat for lazy zombies to blow the clippings into. I won't even hire a crew if they don't have chute blockers.
That's unfortunate, I don't use chute blockers because most mornings I'm mowing wet grass and that stuff builds up under my mowers, but I don't leave a mess in or out of the lawn. I see guys that leave clumps in the yard all the time, we go back and blow that stuff to break it up into the lawn as well as along fence lines.
Seed oils in your food cause you to burn and Sunscreen causes cancer. Cut the seed oils from your diet and you’ll never have to put cancer causing sunscreen chemicals on again.
Not having people nearby when cutting, hit a Kong hard rubber dog toy once ,it spit out that hard that it put a huge dent in the side of a steel pole barn 30' away. That thing would have probably killed someone if it hit them.

Start with a perimeter cut or two then 3 point turns within that area for the rest of the lawn... Unless you can come back after the grass dries.

Cutting a ditch and leaving a “line” at the bottom because the deck didn’t line up right or because they were too lazy to weedeat the bottom
