This is a GE fridge that had the food starting to go bad and the ice cream really soft. That was the first sign. The problem was not that it couldn't get cold. That part was working perfectly. It's that the fridge also needs to periodically melt the ice that builds upon the fins. The heating element in this fridge burned out just like a lightbulb does, and then it would not melt the ice. The ice then gets so massive it stops all airflow. The only way to keep food at the correct temp is with airflow. This fridge is a GE GSS25JERF BB The BB part of the model number bust means that the finish is black. The Heating Element was part number G7102
The part I replaced for this model fridge was a GE WR51X10055 Refrigerator Defrost Heater and Assembly, 725 Watts, 12 Inch. See it here amzn.to/2dUGLsF

RUclips is the best...Thanks for posting this very informative video. I just repaired my GE side-by-side. One thing of note is that when I tested my NEW defrost heater element it still did not test positive for a short with my multimeter.

My GE freezer couldn't handle heat/cold of garage. Moving it indoors got it working well again.
One thing a person needs to be careful is that the light bulb in the freezer if it ever burns out, and it somehow becomes broken, never attempt to remove it with out the power cord unplugged. There is a door switch that turn it on and could cause a shock if you are trying to remove pieces of the bulb metal parts out of the socket. This is the way it is on my Whirlpool.

My freezer has the same EXACT same issue, how important is it to test the continuity with the multimeter before replacing the part?
What would cause it not to freeze and there is no ice blockage on coils. Replaced relay/hard start with a supco410. and all sticks on compressor all came back with continuity, cleaned coils under frig, compressor puts out freon but then tube on compressor goes from real cold to cool? Can you help me out?

Omg, my fridge is the exact same, same heater, etc... I don't know if it's the heater yet, it just started acting up so I removed everything from the bottom hoping the food was just causing the problem... But I might just order the heater so I have it to replace if it doesn't start freezing. Do you have a recommendation for a less expensive meter, just something basic? Thanks!

Hi Adam I tested the heating element for continuity and it beeped. But when I checked the back of the fridge the blue wire and orange wire had no continuity . what can be the problem if the heating element works but not the wiring

The freezer isn't freezing. It's cold but not freezing. I've cleaned the coils and the condenser fan is working. The fridge is at a good temp. Since the fridge isn't warm, then I'm suspecting that it's not a defrost heater problem, though I haven't visually inspected the coils - will do tomorrow. Any suggestions?

Hi, I recently got changed a refrigerator compressor by a technician. But I didn't check the cooling of the freezer compartment. It was cold but not cold enough to freeze the things. Then I called the technician again & he told that the gas pressure could be low. So he brought the gas & filled the gas in the refrigerator. & told met to check again for a day or two. But with that action its freezer temperature increased. Though it shows colder than the outside temperature but its efficiency has reduced. Please tell me what shall do for this problem? My fridge has the same exact problem. I followed all your steps down to the heating element, continuity failed. Now my balls are stuck to the ice maker and the left one has shrunk considerably. My wife says I'm doing it on purpose to avoid taking out the trash. The ER is on its way because I can't feel my balls anymore. Do you recommend I get a new heating element or buy a new fridge.
Update: Doc had to remove my left ball, but wife says the right one is good enough so long as I'm not shooting blanks. And the freezer is purring like a kitten.

Kenmore double door 795.51833.411, compressor works not too hot, cooling fan for compressor works, both fans inside work, both door switches work, refrigerator at 46 deg and freezer at 46 deg. Coils feel a little colder like 40 deg. Left on a few hours, but not cooling enough in the freezer. Any ideas?

Hi my Ge side by side is the same. Not cooling enough. Freezer part. The evaporator fan stopped worming and i replaced that. Nut still didnt work. Im now measuring heating element and reads 86 ohm. This should be ok ? Or not
if it was infinite ohms (OL) it would be a broken element. If it was infinite (or very very high) ohms, it would be shorted. Replace either.
86 sounds reasonable, depending on design.
It's very important to keep your appliances at the proper temperatures. Keep the refrigerator temperature at or below 40° F (4° C). The freezer temperature should be 0° F (-18° C). Check temperatures periodically. If the temperatures aren't kept at the proper settings the more chance Listeria, a bacterium that causes foodborne illness, can grow, especially if the refrigerator temperature is above the safe temperature. Thermometers are the best way of knowing these temperatures and are generally inexpensive.
Hey Adam, so I've recent replaced the same part that was in the video. But I found another problem. The freezer side (left side) of the fridge is working fine, but the right side is not cold at all. The cool air from the freezer is not coming over. Can you help me with this?
Diffuser vent not working maybe? It opens and closes electrically and allows air to come through from the freezer side

Check the compressor relay shake it if it make a rattle noise means is broken needs to be replace
I changed the heating element and the two thermostat on the freezer side. I cleaned the coils. All fans are running. I'm not sure what else to change
Greetings AdamDIY! My freezer is not chilling below 30 degrees (same fridge as in this video), the lower coil ices over, the remaining is ice free. At 2:50 you were testing the connections on the main control board. After I place my multimeter in the locations you advised, I get zero continuity tone on the meter; so I believe the heating unit is bad. I pulled the heating element out, performed the same test and I do get continuity. So I pulled the thermostat, testing that in a glass of ice water, and I get continuity there too. So I believe both the heater and thermostat is in working order. Do I need to replace the board since I had zero continuity when testing?
same fridge but not froze up, gets down to about 35 on freezer side set with both sides on 5/5 cleaned seals and coils inside freeze and dust from underneath, oiled fan motor and still wont get down to 10 degrees. am stumped as fridge runs 24/7 when house temp reaches 75 in the house. did the dollar bill test all the way around after cleaning seals any one have an idea?

I have a similar problem the fans are working I put the dial up to 9 on both sides and only get cool and damp in there. I hate to throw this fridge away. It's the same G.E. please help.

So I have an exact model that is stock in heater defrost mode, after deicing, the heater comes back on right away almost and makes sizzling noises as the water drops on it. the fridge tries and even seems like it got cold, but the heater element does no go off and so the temp never gets better beside the fact that it seems dangerous to see such glow right through the metal covering the section! Any ideas? Maybe the Brain then? did not cycle back?

The back wall of the freezer compartment is totally covered with frost. Tomorrow AM I am going to check the coils. Now going to bed feeling I may not have to buy another refrigerator. Could this also cause the fridge to run continually and not get cool enough even if you turn up the thermostat to 8-9? ??

I have a Kenmore upright freezer, model 253.28432809. About a year ago, didn't need it, so, unplugged it. It was working fine, then. Now, it won't get cool. Compressor is working, fan in fridge above coils is working. There is frost on the copper tubing that comes from the coils. The coils, however are not frosting up or getting cold. Does anybody have any suggestions? It was suggested that the compressor is too hot. I'm not sure that that is the case. Could it be low on freon? The only thing that changed, from when it had worked fine, a year ago, is that it sat, unplugged. That's what's making me wonder if freon leaked out, and there's not enough for it to cool, sufficiently.

I have a Frigidaire side by side model FRS6LR5EB3 that the freezer side is not getting below 18 degrees even with the thermostat set on 6 for coldest setting. The refrigerator is getting cold though. I have replaced the starter relay and compacitor on the compressor, because I could hear it clicking. The defrost cycle is working and I have heard the ice dripping when it is on and found a little water on the floor but not much. The evaporator fan is blowing on the freezer side because I can hear it as well. My ice maker is making ice, but at a slow rate. Any suggestion on what else I may need to check on this particular mode.

It could be as simple as a bad seal on the door or a door that does not close all the way. I have seen several with that problem. Look for air gaps on all sides of the freezer door.
I checked the heater and I have continuity so that is good. Will a bad defrost thermostat keep the freezer from freezing and the fridge from getting cold enough? Thanks man.

If the heating element on the water dispenser tube goes bad which it will do not go to all that stupid trouble too many connections to many different at the bottom of the chute got a one and a half inch wide slot down 5 inches use your multi-max do not go all the way through remove the plastic dig out all the phone with a spoon you will see the nozzle unscrew the nozzle unplug it from the tube shove the tube through drill tiny holes around the tube for heat put tape over it and then refill cavity with expanding foam do not let it get cold it will not work trim it down replace your plastic fill with caulking
hello can you help me , i have a sumsung refrigerator and the freezer is not getting cold. the fan doesn't turn on. i test the fan and it works i test the plug that is connecting to the fan and it doesn't have any volts coming to the fan. what do you think what it should be the problem ?
The internal fan? or the compressor fan? I am assuming the internal fan. When something is not getting power you need to follow the line back and keep testing voltage till you find out where it stops.

I found out my Defrost Heater is out. I followed your video and bam, when I removed the back cover in the freezer area I found the coils to be thick with ice. I proceeded to test the heater and no continuity . I removed the defrost heater assembly and will look and call to find the part. My question , can I run my fridge for at least a couple of days without the assembly ?

My freezer isn't staying cold. I know the defrost element is good , I've seen it get red hot. No frost build up but freezer isn't getting cold?? What could be the problem .. it's a ge like in this video . Seems like it's defrosting too often or something

@@kartboarder22g17 yes!! It was the compressor relay.. they sell a universal one for around 20 bucks. It's called a 3 in 1 I believe.
@@kartboarder22g17 I cleaned the all the dust from the compressor coils with air compressor and a shop vac and installed the relay. Works brand new. And it is easy to do. If you need any help I'll do my best to help
