It is also a reference to Chinese history. People (especially kids) who live or grew up in poverty often have nothing to eat, so they turn to eating snow in order to have the 'sensation' of eating. Xiao's line is a reference to that, but er... it became a sort of meme in the Western side of the community lol.
Laila was definitely dedicated to her work as Xiao, as in the many voicing industries a voice actress would have a role for a male child or teenager, but to hear such a range for such a character as Xiao played by an actress is something to definitely behold with so much respect. I was shocked to know it was a female behind his voice and it works so well. You can tell there's a difference from say, Bennett or Aether maybe. Of course their body language and how they approach you also matters but just from Xiao's tormented past alone is what brings his voice more to life. You even see that he's not the giver of cold shoulders to everyone, nor should his bluntness be mistaken for being a ''grumpy asshole''. You get to find out his curiosity peeks from behind that shield, he's curious, wanting to ask questions, he longs for knowledge and acceptance. A lot of this I think is misunderstood because younger fans who think on the less logical deeper side just see him as an adorable angry kitten of death of something and sure you ..can it that way by all means but I believe to acknowledge what we've been given about it his lore as small as it is, to remind ourselves of it too.

Yeah the first time I heard that idle animation was from co-op mode with my cousin. The time where my cousin is afk I suddenly heard a distress voice line. The voice line seems like the character got a pretty big hit. So I was startled and fingers are ready to press the mouse and e. Turns out it's just Xiao's dialogue, I explain my reaction to what happen to my cousin and they reply "Yeah he's to edgy" 💀 Things that I want to point out: - Where at an area with no enemies around (we were outside the domain from Dragonspane and I just got there because of my cousin) - My cousin has been in the game for a long time so my cousin is naturally more powerful than me so hearing the seemed high taken damage voice lines made me jump more. - I don't own Xiao so I don't know much about his voice lines except the snow part.

They actually did change some of the lines for him. His most notable one is Favorite Food: Almond Tofu and Favorite Food: Memories. The taste of Almond Tofu feels like a fond dream.

It's because he was starved in the past before Zhongli freed him from enslavement, so he thinks snow is food. Chinese citizens in poverty used to do this to stave off hunger during the winter when they had very little food.
I love him and I'm glad his character is developing with each new added story into the game, he has been more considerate to others and he knows he should rest and not force himself when he feels tired now 🤧🤧❤️

TW : eating disorders "once the snow is thick enough we can eat it" . I know many find this line cute or even funny but the reason he says this is actually really sad. The God that enslaved him and made him serve as their bloodhound did not give him anything to eat except snow, so it maybe that Xiao had learnt to appreciate it because he had no other option. However, I realised the more disturbing part is that, oftentimes people with eating disorders such as anorexia will chew on ice in order to feel like they are eating something without actually consuming any food. This line may be a direct or indirect way of indicating the amount of both mental and physical suffering Xiao has had to go through.. I wish I could give him all the Almond Tofu in the world😭❤
i’m pretty sure that the only reason he can have almond tofu is because it tastes almost identical to dreams, which his old master also forced him to eat 😭😭 but i’m pretty sure almond tofu is the only food he can eat, so even if he wanted to try smth else his body would “reject” the food. :(((( not quite sure if it’s cannon but yh xiao has issues, but we love him

Yeah the first time I heard that idle animation was from co-op mode with my cousin. The time where my cousin is afk I suddenly heard a distress voice line. The voice line seems like the character got a pretty big hit. So I was startled and fingers are ready to press the mouse and e. Turns out it's just Xiao's dialogue, I explain my reaction to what happen to my cousin and they reply "Yeah he's to edgy" 💀
Things that I want to point out:
- Where at an area with no enemies around (we were outside the domain from Dragonspane and I just got there because of my cousin)
- My cousin has been in the game for a long time so my cousin is naturally more powerful than me so hearing the seemed high taken damage voice lines made me jump more.
- I don't own Xiao so I don't know much about his voice lines except the snow part.
Even currently I still got startled from that voice line the last time I was in co-op with a player who used Xiao

I know many find this line cute or even funny but the reason he says this is actually really sad. The God that enslaved him and made him serve as their bloodhound did not give him anything to eat except snow, so it maybe that Xiao had learnt to appreciate it because he had no other option. However, I realised the more disturbing part is that, oftentimes people with eating disorders such as anorexia will chew on ice in order to feel like they are eating something without actually consuming any food. This line may be a direct or indirect way of indicating the amount of both mental and physical suffering Xiao has had to go through..
