Is this pushing the 32X? It seems the biggest limit for those early MD games was just the ROM chip. This is a smaller jump than Streets of Rage was from the sequel, and all that was just a ROM 4x the size. The art seems more detailed and using more tiles. Not really that much more colorful. I was hoping to have the scaling from the character selection implemented, and be more arcade perfect.
Though this is clearly an upgrade, It's not pushing the 32X by any means. To me that's where Sega missed the boat. If you're going to create a 32-bit add-on, then there better be a lot more games (than we actually got) that show off that power.
@@TheLaymanVideoGamer to be fair back in it’s day in its limited library half the games did do things the mega drive couldn’t. Virtua racing was a visible step up from the svp chip powered original port. As underwhelming Doom was it played at the proper frame rate, so for all its faults like small window, crap sound, enemies facing one direction, missing levels, it plays fine, a homebrew port shows what it could have been though. While the snes beats it in many ways, the choppy frame rate basically cancels out all those things and renders it unplayable. Using the Jaguar maps would have given it a better frame rate. Virtua fighter on it showed what you can do. The polygon count was lower, but with less flickering and smooth frame rate it was a better experience than the original Saturn game. As a former owner of the 32X, I have a soft spot for it. It did feel like it was a step up for the Mega Drive, but not big enough considering the Saturn and PlayStation were literally just months away. I would have hoped with the 32x power they would have either ported the sequel return of death adder, or just add massive improvement. What they did here they didn’t really need a 32x. A 16mbit rom chip would have done these improvements.

@@MobileDecay I'm talking about remakes of older titles here. Months apart is very different than years apart, especially back in those days where the technology, technique and design was improving at a crazy speed. I don't recall Space Harrier or After Burner flying off the shelves or being "hot" new titles when they released on 32X. Same thing would have happened to Golden Axe because by then, it was "very old"
Glad you made a video about it. I love the fact that molders are familiar with the 32x and can update older games to benefit from the 32x. I'd love to see a more robust Eternal Champs or Outrun. That might make me crack.
Looks like a rom hack mix of arcade and megadrive. The Sega cd version has better quality music and speech than the arcade and has all the little jingles in the background on the boss stage's and you will get that in some emulation device's.
They did confuse us. No doubt. I went straight from Sega CD to PS1 myself. Didn't buy the Saturn until much much later (within last few years). I also have the 32X NOW, but I used my friends 32X back in the day. Definitely not worth it back in the day, but I do enjoy it now.
You should be comparing this to the arcade version. If you absolutely must draw a Genesis comparison use the cart version, the CD version removes many sound effects to fit into RAM. Anyway, next to the arcade... Yea this version is pure trash bro! I mean for F's sake Gillis Thunderhead hasn't even got a "gold" colored axe. How hard is it to recolor a damn spright? Far as I'm concerned arcade was first, so arcade is the original definitive version. This might be better than the original port, but its clearly NOT like the arcade version (Jesus just look at them side-by-side)... So any effort involved (and whatever you paid for that abomination) was all for NOTHING.
Audio is different on the Mega Drive compared to the Mega CD, Mega CD has arcade audio. Mega CD version is one player only. You need to compare the OG arcade version to the 32x. And the dead enemies do not disappear on the arcade version. 32x version has only one real difference (the background) Honestly a pointless conversion.
Backgrounds look nice, yes... but THIS many years later... we should have an arcade perfect port. I was always disappointed with the riding of beasts never having the animation of riding up towards the top of the screen (you are always pointing downwards, even when moving upwards). And ALL of the villagers running away... not just a squeaking little girl and boy. Nice try, but seems like the case of "too little, too late".

Attack hit detection is the same as Genesis and not arcade 6. Missing Alex death intro 7. Missing a lot more villagers running and getting abused 8. Missing skeleton attack and death sounds 9. Enemy layout is from Genesis and not arcade 10. Dragon and chicken leg has wrong sounds I can go on but you get the point. Superior to Genesis, inferior to arcade which was still running off their 16-bit motherboard so if 32x can not even replicate a faithful version of the first game then good luck with the second (arcade) game which is on their 32-bit board. Would I buy it back then? Probably since I love it so much. Great video btw.
The programmers used the 32x color palette but neglected to use its audio and better sprites. I do not like that! The programmers used Genesis sprites and sound and used just some of 32x colors! I could tell not even one minute into this video that I would want to subscribe to your channel-And I did! You're got a really cool style and format. Keep it up!
Oh thank you! 🙏🏻 I appreciate it.
Golden Axe 3 is when the game play gets fun. It was so long ago I don't remember but something about playing as the cat guy made the game more fun, less like double dragon and more like a game where skill matters.
There was never a GA3. There was 1,2 and revenge of death adder
@@codenamecod2931 you better do a RUclips search on
(" Golden axe 3 no damage")
And let all those people who made videos that they are wrong.
😜
@@codenamecod2931There was a Golden Axe 3. It never got a physical copy in America. It was only released digitally on Sega Channel. All of the Genesis collections have it though.
I miss my sega CD, even tho that 32X Side by side comparison is easily the superior version
I'll always have a soft spot for my SEGA CD version
This is actually quiet nice, however i don't own a 32x i mean i was but, not anymore these days, however i'd love to try it on a decent emulator if the rom would be available
The ROM is definitely available ou there.
This trearment is what aMaru is doing with Ghouls n ghosts. Not a 32x version tho. Check it out.
Better graphics on 32X but the music is better on Sega CD.
Agreed!
Found myself with a few dead c64s so coming to yt for motivation 😅
My only complaint. I want the Conan aaaaargh scream in cd quality from the movie
Can you imagine if PS5 and seriesX were programmed in C and Assembly? They would run games at 500 fps.
Games would also take 500 years to be made. Coding is a thing of the past for the most part.
@@Jolly-Green-Steve They would actually take less time to develop. I know from experience. There is a difference between what we all think and the reality. In therory you would be right, but in reality it is not like that for many reasons. I am not saying that we should replace the scripting in the game with c, but the engine below.
@@MarquisDeSang what are you talking about? all video game engines are made from code then those engines are used to then make the game. this is how it's been done since the 90s whether it was a companies own in-house made engine or another's like unreal.
@@Jolly-Green-Steve These clown have no idea how a cpu actually works or how their C++ code actually compile to. C++ allowed shitty programmers to get a job at a lower price. Real white men use only c and asm... and maybe holy-c if they are demi-god
the 32x game looks great and it is only missing the arcade voices from the golden axe plus hack. but anything is better than hearing OW
The Genesis version was pretty good already there's no need to upgrade, the real question why didn't anyone port the Arcade version of Golden Axe 2?
I'd play that for sure!
Where's the parallax scrolling from the arcade?
Splatterhouse 3 was my joint on Sega.
that game is so great , thanks to the author of 32x version
I want one... where I get this?
I got it off Etsy, but the ROM is available for free somewhere.
No scaling on the magics is very disappointing
I’m not sure why you wouldn’t go with a 32x cd version of the game tbh
That would have been amazing!
Awwan!!! I actually remember playing this at the PIZZA HUT 🍕, when it was still a sit down restaurant, w the salad bar, and jukebox along w 2 arcades....Golden Axe was one!.....man this brings back so many memories,..the smell o the inside restaurant, soomething aboutbPizza hut always smelled so goood and inviting, and while my mom n dad sat at the booth my brothees n i would play some GOLDEN AXE,...
I remember having either the axe or the sword...regardless it was so cool.....wow!!!! Bring me back to when i wasnlike 10/12 yrs old...thanks guys GOLDEN AAAAXE!!!!!! 😅😅😅. 🛡️ 🪓 ⚔️ 🗡️ 🪙 🪙 💀
I played this so much on Sega genius...
What is the background music from?
Golden Axe is a good start, but it still needs more hacking!!!!
Now who's waiting for ALTERED BEAST 32X!?
Sign me up!
alright - I mean I feel like I didn't miss anything playing the original Genesis version.
IT's a nice upgrade, but yeah... I agree.
Sega cd version has different sound FX from the genesis version
not a fan of the 32x, just did the rom patch and added it to launchbox. If you already own the entire collection for 32x i guess why not . I dont see it worth the investment
I would say this is CLEARLY for those who are either collectors or big Golden Axe fans. Totally agree.
people wouldn't have bought it back then because the market was completely different. People didn't care for remakes, they wanted the hot new thing, always
Did you forget about Virtua racing Deluxe and Mortal kombat for the Sega CD, and Mortal Kombat 2 for the 32X, and Nba Jam TE for the 32X, and Corpes Killer on the Sega 32X CD, and Primal rage on 32X, and Pitfall the Mayan adventure on the 32X, and WWF WrestleMania arcade on the 32X, as well as many others including yet a third version of NBA Jam on the Sega CD? 🤔
Same thing would have happened to Golden Axe because by then, it was "very old"
I like the Sega CD colors more.
This game should've been made for the 32X when it was out
33X?
Agreed!
@@MaxAbramson333 minus 1 X?
That ow sound on the Sega CD version is pretty annoying lol. Wish they would have put in the intro like in the arcade though.
looks fantastic too bad is single player, but perhaps it can be implemented some day
I'm very hopeful 🙏🏻
@@TheLaymanVideoGamer why would they make it only one player thats what made the sega cd one not too good back in the 90's
@@JunkerDC it’s still possible they may go back and do that. I’m hopeful. But yeah, wish this was a 2-player co-op
Glad you made a video about it. I love the fact that molders are familiar with the 32x and can update older games to benefit from the 32x. I'd love to see a more robust Eternal Champs or Outrun. That might make me crack.
@@samfrito I would get either of those in a heartbeat!
Can never understand why Sega could never produce a system that can produce the arcade games at home. The Genesis certainly wasn't that.
Beautiful! But I can't understand why Gilius's axe isn't goldish like the arcade version
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Looks like a rom hack mix of arcade and megadrive. The Sega cd version has better quality music and speech than the arcade and has all the little jingles in the background on the boss stage's and you will get that in some emulation device's.
I need it
You can jump up the rock platform at the start not half way through
Sega confused us soo much I just stuck to my Genesis. Then went straight to PS1 not dealing with the bs of even the Saturn marketing or lack of.
They did confuse us. No doubt. I went straight from Sega CD to PS1 myself. Didn't buy the Saturn until much much later (within last few years). I also have the 32X NOW, but I used my friends 32X back in the day. Definitely not worth it back in the day, but I do enjoy it now.
I want the rom 😊
What happened to "oh gaaaaad!!"?
Low framerate capture makes both of them appear not so great.
They could've done more with the Sega CD version
If its 2 players, then we can just burn the cd version
Something is seriously wrong with your setup. Whenever sprites move, they kinda bounce around and distort the area around them.
Now let's get a strider 32x along with vector man and clone wars and a sonic with more colors wouldn't hurt.,..oh and eternal champions 1&2😂
I would be ALL IN!
doesn't look that much different to me seems like a waste of time
32x has a 30 fps frame limit...... ftw!!!!
Gillus' axe still isnt golden. Missed opportunity.
Audio is different on the Mega Drive compared to the Mega CD, Mega CD has arcade audio. Mega CD version is one player only.
You need to compare the OG arcade version to the 32x.
And the dead enemies do not disappear on the arcade version.
32x version has only one real difference (the background)
Honestly a pointless conversion.
Fast load on 32x )))
32x version very close to the arcade; not arcade perfect but very close.. it missing speech; the " Oh God" taken from David Caruso in first blood.
Huge fail, HUGE... Always wondered about the fact that no version NEVER FUCKING ACTUALLY HAD A GOLDEN AXE?!?!?
Hard Pass, i might download the rom someday......!!!
First of all my friend you need show the Sega CD version on a Real Sega CD HARDWARE to make it Fair the Comparison between the two games👍 !!! Cause it seems clearly that you are using an Emulator with the > 2x SAI FILTER on the Sega CD version😬 !!!!
It was real hardware. I don't do emulators.
@@TheLaymanVideoGamer NOPE !!! you are using an Emulator with the > 2x SAI FILTER on the Sega CD version >> I GOT THE SEGA CD VERSION AND I KNOW HOW IT REALLY LOOKS ON A TV !!!
@@mode7perspective27 incorrect.
@@TheLaymanVideoGamer you are using an Emulator with the > 2x SAI FILTER on the Sega CD version !!!! PERIOD !!!
@@mode7perspective27 if that makes you feel better then by all means.
Not very good port.
1. No parallax in the background
2. Arcade graphics but not the same effects
3. Music is decent
4. Voice is terrible. Missing the Conan and Rambo death screams
5. Attack hit detection is the same as Genesis and not arcade
6. Missing Alex death intro
7. Missing a lot more villagers running and getting abused
8. Missing skeleton attack and death sounds
9. Enemy layout is from Genesis and not arcade
10. Dragon and chicken leg has wrong sounds
I can go on but you get the point.
Lazy ass programming! I rate this 3 thumbs down because the programmers are using Genesis chips only and slapping the name 32x for hype! 32x is far superior then Genesis hardware specs in every way!!! They can't fool a person that really knows how 32x operates!
Too dark.... Pyron's color hack looks better.
Only 5 player. The sega genesis had 2 players at the same time.
If Sega had made this back in the day, I never would have sold off my 32X.
No offense. But WHAT IS THE POINT of being a 32x nerd? We have emulation. Unless your intention is to document tech history at the hardware level, these games are available without messing with obsolete hardware.
Not sure I qualify as a 32X nerd, but thank you. I'll take it. I'm a big nostalgia guy and I just prefer playing on the hardware. Nothing against emulation. I just like the feel of the original hardware, the original controllers, etc. That's what I grew up with.
It’s literally the same game as the original game…
