How about reading the Tanakh for yourself to see what God meant for "afflict" as the word ANAH is mentioned over 70 times.
Why are you rushing to the Rabbis and their Talmud to understand God's word? There is nothing in the Tanakh that says God provided the Oral Torah and Rabbis the interpreters of the the written Torah.
Fasting on the Day of Atonement is an invention of Rabbinic Judaism who has never understood God's word at all but instead simply debate interpretations & opinions.
Again. The word anah (afflict) is mention many times in the Tanakh, and you simply needed to read the verses yourself, and you will easily understand what God wants you to do on Yom Kippur.
The Tanakh clearly warns that you must not ADD or takeaway from the Word of God .... and this is exactly what Rabbis with the Talmud have been doing for over 1400 years.
Rabbinic Judaism forbids the reading of many chapters in the Tanakh, because they say the Christians are MISUSING them to prove Jesus Christ is the Messiah, and only Rabbis know the true meaning of the Word. Isaiah 7:14 has God giving a sign of a virgin having a child and he will be called "God is with us." Rabbis insist that that it is just a young woman not a virgin, even though it will only be a sign from God with a virgin birth ... and ... alma in biblical times only means a young virgin woman.
Rabbis reject Jesus being the Messiah and the Son of God. But Proverbs 30:4 clearly says God has a son -- "... what is his name? And what is the name of his Son? Surely you know."
And surely the Rabbi who rejected Jesus did know his name. Which is why they invented the name, Yeshu Yimakh shemo.
Christ is the English word for the greek translation of HaMesiach
Jesus is the English word for the greek translation of Yeshua .... which means "salvation."
Again. There is nothing in the Tanakh that says God gave the oral Torah to better understand the written Torah and that Rabbis are to be the only interpreters of God's word.
But God warns that you must not add to or delete any of his Word.
Read the Tanakh for yourself ... and do not seek Rabbinic interpretations.
God has cursed the Jews & Rabbinic Judaism ... for something they did 2000 years ago ... which they have not confessed & repented to be forgiven by God & then blessed.
God has blessed Christianity .... which began 2000 years ago with religious Jews rejecting Rabbinic teachings, and accepted Yeshua HaMasiach as the Son of God( Proverbs 30:4).
