I've watched your video about half a dozen times lol and each time I pick up something new. I just re-created all of my sounds using 2 A in the GT and I run them into my Roland JC and it sounds unbelievable!
Man, you explained this so good! Specially the 4 cable method. I did not have the full concept till i watched your video. Thank you so much for sharing!
Hey Dan great video and you will be happy to know that I just purchased the GT 100 today and you graciously spent time demonstrating its flexibility at the Long and McQuade store in Bedford! Thanks Again! Jeff
You helped me decide to spring for a GT-100. I was fretting (pun intended) over the ins and outs of it, and your clear explanation showed how easy it really is. Thank you!
Hey Dan I just wanted to say good job on the GT 100 ! you broke it down like a pro! I watched some others on you tube who were ignorant of that concept! but you handled it with a touch of rock and class! thanks" Dwayne Fengier"
This is such a great and very useful video. I just got a Boss Nextone Special and connected my loyal Boss GT-100 to it. Without your video I would have spent much more time trying to figure out how to workout the S/R and pre-amp stuff. Many thanks!
This is the first video that explains in layman’s terms the various cabling for the gt100, and makes sense of it all. Thank you ! I finally understand the reason for the 4CM.
Dan, Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video....incredibly clear and concise. I wanted to be able to use a mix of sounds with my Blackstar Preamp and using the COSM amps....S/R On and Off .... Its a beautiful thing. Boss will sell a lot of these units just because of the flexibility and their understanding of what real guitarists need. You are the MAN.
Brilliant Dan. Thank you very much. I'm just a little bit in the dark though about how you switch between the GT-100 preamp and your amp's preamp, right at the end of the video. To anyone who supplies the answer thank you in advance.
This was a very useful demonstration of the GT 100 which i happen to own. I now know why the sound coming from my amp sounded kind of funky, i am in the front of a Fender Virbrolux that does not have a send and return on the back and i didn't know you need to turn off the BOSS preamp in the signal chain.
Great review Dan , easily the best on U tube .....thanks for sharing . I have a JVM head and wanted something that could both change channels and give me more FX to play with ......I just bought a GT-100 after seeing this so thanks again man . Vinny from Scotland .
Sir, it may be a little late to thank you for this very usefull video wich made me understand the whole thing as I'm a beginner. Very instructive. Thank's again.
Video still relevant today--thank you! QUESTION: why (or is) the 4 Cable method better than, say setting output to Returns and sending L/R out from GT-100 directly to GA-212 A/B stereo inputs on the back of the amp? (you're still using the Preamp on the GT-100--and this is a mains in--it bypasses the preamp on the physical amplifier). Why would 4CM be better than this approach?
Es mejor cuando tu amplificador real es muy bueno y quieres seguir utilizando su preamplificador natural, si no es el caso no vale la pena en mi opinión.
Cool vid Dan, good overview with enough background info, slanted to the GT-100 which is an imminent purchase - hopefully. I had always stuck everything in front of the input, in a long series. Will explore. Thanks.
Im still using the GT100 in almost 2020 N i think im going to keep using this unit 4 a long time coz it really blows in terms of sonic achievements ...i also have a good old Zoom G9 which has tons of good tones thanks to its hybrid tube/solid state preamp section with two tubes (once they have been replaced with good ones)... But the Gt100 with its Dual Processing + an unbeatable PC interface (Tone-Studio) remains my Fav MultiFx unit -- Im doing this 4CM (kind of) with a ENGL 530 tube Preamp + stereo ENGL 840/50 Pow-Amp (3U rack head) i have the the ENGL preamp inserted into the GT100 S/R block N i can switch between channel on my preamp with an Ext. pedal using a TRS 1/4 jack cable (using the Ctrl Assign function) it works flawlessly i have also another tube preamp [Effectrode Blackbird] + an MXR 10 bands EQ inserted into the FX-loop of the ENGL preamp in order to get some more really cool colorations 4 my ENGL Clean N Crunch channels .....this is the best setup you could ever find so far.....
First off excellent demo and thanks for the explanation of the Gt-100's wiring set-up's. Very helpful. Using the 4 cable method, your demo doesn't resolve the issue of changing the GT-100's "Output Select" from "Combo Return" back to "Combo Amp" when turning the S/R in the GT-100 on/off. I've tried to find a solution to this but there is none. The only way to change the "Output Select" is to change patches. You cannot change the "Output Select" within an individual patch. Boss missed this one.
Thanks, Roland for elucidating the uses of the four cable method. I was wondering, though, when you explained 'switching the GT-100 COSM Preamps and my amp' what you physically were kicking on the GT?? Little confused. Ernie Johnson,Thousand Oaks, CA.
Great video and explanation on 4 cable and OUTPUT SELECT, BUT, no mention on which OUTPUT SELECT to use in 4 cable method. I'm thinking that if I have the pre-amp in the GT100 turned off and using my amps pre-amp I should have it on COMBO AMP, JC-120, let's say, and, now I turn the GT100 pre-amp on, and the SEND/RETURN on, should the OUTPUT SELECT be on combo return? Or does it matter?
Thanks for making that so clear. Could you please make a video demonstrating how to get levels correct using a board (GT100) and amp? There are a lot of volumes to play with: Guitar Vol, GT100 input level, GT100 patch level, GT100 output, Amp pre-amp volume and gain then the master volume. Thanks.
I love the dual amp tones from this unit. I recently bought mid-level studio monitors specifically for home practice using the dual amp feature. The only thing I do different is, instead of a 100 right and 100 left i go 85 right-85 left and it really seem s to fatten up the tone.
Good day. I have a Boss Gt-100 conected throught the 4 cable method to a Marshal Amp. If I still want to use the amp simulation in the GT-100, where must I put the loop S/R (send/return); before or after the amp simulations. Please reply. Thank you.
Hi, thanks for the great video! The 4 cable method was never explained properly in the Roland instruction manual. However, I do have one question: I still would like to use a couple of my old effects pedals, I.e. Wah Wah, Dirty Little Secret. I've noticed on your setup you are also doing the same but it wasn't mentioned how you're hooking them up in the chain. The old method, as per Roland, is to hook them into the send/return on the GT100 but that's no longer an option sin the send return goes into the amp. Any advice? Regards
Gil Marriner Take whichever external pedals you want before the pre-tube amplifiers and chain them together, then send a cable into the input of the amp...take a cable from the FX send to any external pedals you want after the pre-amp and chain them together, and plug that into the return of the GT-100. External pedals will be hard to reach if you're just using a short cable to connect to your first external pedal from the "send" of the GT, but it uses "tube buffering" so you can use a long cable which, gives you room to put it within reach.
Great demo. I'm thinking about getting a GA-212 for my Eleven Rack, and this has sold me. This guy even gets a great sound out of a GT100, and does an excellent job of explaining all of the connection methods. Who is the guy in the video? He lays all this stuff out better than anyone else I've heard. Edit: It's Dan Doiron. www.dandoiron.com/index/
Hi Dan; Excellent video! It answered most of my questions. However, I'm a little unclear on the S/R option. Where does using this selection come into play? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Phil
The information that you gave was absolutely awesome. I didn't know how to bypass the GT 100 and use my amp. Now it works just the way I have always wanted it to. The problem that I am having now is that my looper doesn't play back. Do you have a fix for that? Thank you so much.
i have a jet city 50 watt combo5012c;and what cable method do you suggest with the boss gt-100 and this combo amp;if you want to utilize the amps preamp and other pedals like tech 21 para driver and reverb fender pedal? Or do ya have to choose one or the other methods? thanks jesse.
Question please? You mentioned using the send/returns in back of an amp;and for instance i would have the jcm 2000 dsl 100 Mlb anniversary (2005ish) half -stack;so how would i plug ths Boss Gt-100 unit if i were using the ISP Technologies G string II pedal? This one i just got about a week ago? Thanks Jesse.
Do you go in-and-out of the preamp or the effects loop I have both I have a Marshall head with pre amp send and return, and effects loop send and return
Hi Dan; One final question to clarify a point in your excellent video. Just after you discussed phrase looping, you mentioned you just hit one switch to switch between the amps in the GT 100 and your own amps pre-amp. Did you assign a pedal to do this for you? How is that accomplished? Phil
I have the same doubt, since I think the pedal to be assigned is Accel/CTL , that is on the right side, and it seems he press a pedal on the left side...Anybody knows that? Regards
Thank you for your review, perfectly done! I have 1 question, please answer it if you get a chance. I love the GT-100 but it seems to have very limited looping functionality (39 seconds or so). I'd be interested in buying an RC-30 and hooking it up to this existing setup (4 cable method, or 5 for stereo) could you explain how I could add an RC-30 properly and where in the loop it would go? I think I have an idea but I'd like some clarification. I'm thinking it will sit between the final GT-100 output and the amp return, is that correct?
AlTheEngineer I have a Jam Man Phrase looper that I love and, this is a great question! If you are just recording guitar loops, you probably want all of the tones your creating to get recorded in your phrase loop pedal...If you do the 4 cable method, 1) unplug the last cable in the chain (Gt-100's "L-mono/out that goes to the "FX return" of the amp)...Put one end of that cable into the Gt-100's "L-Mono/Out," plug the other end into the input of your loop 2) take another cable and plug it into the output of your loop, and put the other end into the return of the amp. You can do this same process for a stereo sound if you have a phrase looper with two inputs and outputs. You'll just take one of the outputs from the loop pedal to another speaker system.
Thank you so much for the reply! I have the GT-100 now and I haven't yet purchased or connected the looper! Will certainly be following your guide when I do so! I appreciate your time!
Hello Dan Would you not say that the sound suffers and loses quality even more by the 4 cable method in this case because of the extra AD/DA conversion that you need to do to bring the audio signal back into the GT100 for a second time?

I would not purchase the GT 100 for distortion or gain boosts, rather I would use it for switching my whole rig (channels and other features on the amp) and adding delays/verbs. Hi would you suggest in getting a blackstar ID: Core model for basically the same reason shown in this video: has 2 stereo speakers or just get a PA Speaker to go with my GT 100? thanks
Gligor Vlad It depends on how much money you're looking to spend (I hate this answer haha.) I feel like stereo sound is better with two PA's, because they can be separated further than the two ones in an amp. I think people tend to hear stereo sound from speakers that are close to each other more like a blend. Finally, someone who clearly explain the send and return function .. THANK YOU so much DAN !! :))))))

So far out of many reviews, you are the only person who shows the four cable method. Excellent review!!!
yeah thats right dude! 👍 very nice tutorials!
Six years later, your video is still quite relevant and extremely useful. Thanks. Keep ‘em coming! 😎👍🏼
this guy is a natural teacher. great video.
This the absolutely best video/explanation/lesson on how to hock up the GT100 in the most effective way.
Great lesson! Just got a GT100 the other day. I knew nothing about effects chains but now I feel very knowledgable. Keep rocking!
The best explanation of effects chain, pre-amps, and multi effects pedals I have ever heard.
I've watched your video about half a dozen times lol and each time I pick up something new. I just re-created all of my sounds using 2 A in the GT and I run them into my Roland JC and it sounds unbelievable!
The info in this video is pure gold... even after all these years...

The best tutorial video on the topic. Rare to find on the net
This has been the best education on using the 100 I've found on Y.T. Well done, easy to follow. Thank you...
This is the first video that explains in layman’s terms the various cabling for the gt100, and makes sense of it all. Thank you ! I finally understand the reason for the 4CM.

How would you use the 4CM going into a mixer? This is such a great video!
Hi, thanks for the great video! The 4 cable method was never explained properly in the Roland instruction manual. However, I do have one question:

So helpful. Thanks a lot!
Question please? Hi Dan;
One final question to clarify a point in your excellent video.
Dan, is the four cable method only apply in one patch only or that automatically apply to all patches ? Thanks
Hello Dan
Would you not say that the sound suffers and loses quality even more by the 4 cable method in this case because of the extra AD/DA conversion that you need to do to bring the audio signal back into the GT100 for a second time?
Do you need TRS cables or just instrument cables for the four cable method?
Hello,
I have a question in regards to setting up and using Midi capabilities with a midi controllable amp head.
My plan is to plug my guitar directly into my amp head (Revv Generator 100). Then using the midi ins and outs on both the GT100 and the Revv head. I would not purchase the GT 100 for distortion or gain boosts, rather I would use it for switching my whole rig (channels and other features on the amp) and adding delays/verbs.
So I would obviously turn off the pre amp section on the pedalboard but what would I say it is being plugged into? The loop of the amp?
This all in theory should work, do you have any suggestions to optimize performance and would this work?
Cheers
Great video, and nice man. Thanks!
Hi would you suggest in getting a blackstar ID: Core model for basically the same reason shown in this video: has 2 stereo speakers or just get a PA Speaker to go with my GT 100? thanks
Gligor Vlad It depends on how much money you're looking to spend (I hate this answer haha.)
