    Have you ever aged your own whiskey?

      iv been wanting to poke around with it. wanted to take some rokker vodka and throw it in a oak barrel for a year and do winter simulations. Always figured that would be fun.

      Aged some Buffalo Trace White Dog Mash #1...hated the result...love aged bourbon, but the White Dog taste better before I put it in a mini cask...mini casks are a bullshit fad...let the professionals age your bourbon

      how long did you ag it for before the taste test?

    I am currently aging a (local to me) Vancouver Island distillery (Stillhead is the name) single malt whiskey in a 3L mini cask. It has been in the cask for a year at this point and I have not tasted even a single drop yet. The whiskey was completely unaged when it went into the cask. I try to rotate the cask every Friday moving the spigot from 5:00 position to 7:00 or back the other way. Just trying to create a small amount of movement and greater surface contact inside the cask. I'm still intending to leave it until August 2026 before pouring any for a taste. That is when I retire. Fingers crossed.

      Geoff, I love the idea, but can I recommend tasting it asap?! It'd stink to over-oak your whiskey for such a special occasion. You can bottle it and let it rest until you retire! Cheers and good luck!

      So it’s been 3 years. Have you tried it? Have you lost a lot of whiskey from evaporation?

    • @Geoff_G
      @Geoff_G Год назад

      @@marcoz2470 I haven't tried it yet. Like my original comment states, I'm waiting until August 2026 (or so) when I retire. I am just going to cross my fingers that it finishes to a nice tasting whiskey.

      @@Geoff_G awesome! I’m excited for you. I’m just about to start one myself. Should be a great whiskey. I’ve been reading online and saw that someone tasted it after 3 months and it was very Oakey and bitter. So he forgot all about it and a year later remembered. He said it was very good. I can only imagine with 6 years. I will message you back when you retire for an update.

    That's really interesting. It would be pretty cool to turn a super-cheap basement brand into a passable, good daily drinker over the period of several months or a year.

    So this was posted two years ago.
    Is the white whiskey still in the barrel.
    Can’t imagine what two years would’ve done to it.

    I do this all the time. The longer you leave it. The better it gets. After a year, you will not know it. Have also used wood chips and spirels. Then transfer to a barl to finish. Choice American oak French Hungarian oak. Also can use maple and birch.

    after you finished aging this round let a sherry ride in the cask a couple of weeks drain it rinse it just once then let a bottom shelf bourbon sit in it a month just set your barrels sit by a heat duck your central heating cycling on and off is adequate to accelerate the aging process

    I have a question. If I bought a 12yr aged whisky and put it on a barrel will it continue to age?

  • @batica992
    @batica992 5 лет назад +1

    Ok,this is very wrong to me...For aging needs time... put in in barrel,or whatever,alchohol pulls out wood ingridients.. when you feel like its enough,remove it from wood,put it in glass but not full,leave place for lil air and open it 1 a month.. in 6 months try it,alhohol will react with wood,releasing new aromas... after 2 week u just drink corn and wood... also i am from balkan,we make hard core Sljivovitca,that feels and smells very good on fruit... also i tasted some very good rakia 20 years old... now im working on Viljamovka rakia,now this is fantasy... Buy more alcholol,leave oak in it,get oak out,put it glass with air,put in house and be patient,tell wife to hide it... :P

    You didn’t add any flavor or water lol? That’s kind of the point. A little water to lower to aging proof. Try some vanilla or caramel flavors to get something new.

    I’m not an expert by ANY means and not a Bourbon snob. If anything I get pissy about all the bourbon bullshit trying to take advantage of the hysteria.
    That being said, next time you try this experiment try a third option.
    You can look up “nuclear aging” in various hobby distillers forums.
    You add a spiral or Domino to a jar and microwave it up to approximately 150 degrees. Bitch put the top of the jar and let it cool to room temperature. Repeat it three or four times..
    The temperature fluctuations drop the Spirit air it out of the wood which is what you’re doing putting it outside.
    It addition theoretically are raising the temperature to 150 to 160° sub of the heads little turd to vapor it be removed for of your spirit.
    Just make sure you don’t go overboard 170° which is the evaporator point of ethanol which you want to keep.

    The 1 L barrels only give you color as there’s not enough time to allow actual aging. Any size less than a 3 L won’t allow enough time to pull most flavors out of the wood.

    Ok I have 4 mini-barrels and there are a few truths. (Chris I wasn't surprised at your results.) First, whisky makers know how to make whisky better than you. Simple. Second, you have to season the barrel, port, sherry, whatever. Fresh oak in a mini-barrel is powerful. Third, these things are AWESOME for cocktails. Manhattan and Negroni rock. Cheers Bourbonite.

      Triplecap professionals are better? Have you actually tasted jack daniels lately? No charactor at all, afer their oldest master distiller died. Now they pay towns folk to rate the whiskey's taste. Since most people want drunk without the taste, they've become flavorless. Proffesional my ass! Their green label used to taste like apples and honey, now its just an oakless bland mess. Did you also know that jim beam makes 30 actual different brands, including old crow, that used to taste like cream corn, now tastes like vodka. There is a reason niche beers are on the rise, and in a few years, i hope, so will niche whiskey makers.

      I did an old fashion cocktail in one. sugar, orange bitters, and some grand marnier. the final result was deadly.
