  • This Creo Parametric tutorial video shows you how to create a Copy Geometry feature using both methods:
    * A Publish Geometry feature; and,
    * Manually selecting references.
    Copy Geometry is a Data Sharing Feature used in the Top Down Design process to communicate design information from a source model - often a Skeleton - to target models, which are often parts or lower-level Skeletons.

    Hey Your Creo Tutorial's are quite useful can make a tutorial for designing a impeller of centrifugal pump.

      No, I don’t have any experience in that area.

    When would you recommend using copy geometry vs. using a skeleton with a shrinkwrap feature? Is it primarily based on the number of components/features you are trying to bring in as a reference to your subassembly model?

      They're not mutually exclusive. I often use both together (and preferably in a skeleton). In cabling, I will use Copy Geoms to grab references for assembling components and Shrinkwraps for routing references. Copy Geom is good when you need references from one source model only. Shrinkwraps are good for referencing multiple components in one step. They can also automatically update with any components that are added to the assembly, which can be both a blessing and a curse.
      Regardless, you should make your choice depending on your situation and what changes you expect in the future.

    If you want copied geometry but have a really large assembly that you are copying from, is there a method that is easier than creating a large amount of copy geometry features in your part?

      See my video on the Shrinkwrap feature.

    Still confused as to why Copy Geometry somehow solves the problem of external references. The examples shown still are creating external references, so the external reference problem that is recommended to avoid is seemingly no different than if Copy Geometry was not used and the external geometry was used directly. The only advantage of the Copy Geometry that I understood was you could turn the update control to off, which breaks the external geometry reference. If one is to avoid external references as recommended, it seems the only option would be to to the update control off. Can you please explain a bit further? Thanks.

      I do not recommend avoiding External References. They are an extremely powerful design tool and an essential part of Top Down Design. I fully recommend designing with External References, but doing them properly - with Data Sharing Features.

    Copy geometry is grayed out for me or not available. Is this based on a global preference or setting?

      Do you have AAX?

      No we don't have that license. I see now that it is required. I used merge/inheritance instead.

      As I state at 4:01, it's a hidden option. That means you aren't going to see it.

      You could not be more wrong. Used properly, external references are a massive benefit towards building Design Intent into your products.

      please trust me. i have used Pro/Engineer since version 17. i have learned from my use that it has a vicious temper if you try to cheat. copy geom will only create external references that will pull the copied model into session every time. the model created will have no definition on its own. you will create a dead model using copy geom. its an absolute waste of time to try and convince me. i have seen the worst garbage models in the database where i have worked to know how useless this modeling method is. do yourself a favor PLEASE. editable models are far more useful than copy geom models

      I first used Pro/E in version 12. I won't try to convince you since you said it's a waste of time, but there are two factual errors in your previous statement. Have a nice day.
