Same issue for me buddy. Just purchased the new diff. Dampener and am about to install. Have a lot of clunking when going over bumps in the rear end, hopefully this solves the issue. Ty for your video
Thanks for the video. I just got done replacing mine on my 2003 CRV. Mine was so rusted that it fell apart. That's when I heard it rattling around. Removing that damn bolt literally took me about an 40 minutes. I had to keep spraying it with 3M lubricant. Used my foot on the ratchet to get it to move. Only took about 5 minutes to get the new one installed.
If I had broken that bolt off I think I would have just left the new damper out and lived without it. We still have the car. A local independent shop replaced the engine front main seal a couple of years ago but otherwise she just keeps going.
I agree, Ken. I have since acquired a smartphone holder device in anticipation of whatever next job comes along. Probably then lighting will still be a challenge. Still, I do like to share what I can in the moment.
I know you have never walked on a tightrope over a gorge before but all you have to do is keep your balance and put one foot in front of the other. And that's all there is to it. I hope this has been helpful.
0$ fix here! I just cut mine out. Cut one of the nubs off it and then pulled it out. Figured its just a damper=not required. No added vibrations or noise from the rear end since even months later. 0$ fix ftw!

Hi Keith, I've got a 2005 and the damper is completely rusted and it is making a clunking noise over some bumps. I tried to loosen the bolt with a breaker bar but haven't had much luck yet and I didn't want to force it and snap the head off so I've been patient and sprayed it with Free All. Hopefully, I don't need to put a grinder to it. Was it difficult at all for you to get that bolt off?
Not that I remember. I probably blasted it myself just out of habit, but Colorado is not as hard on cars as Minnesota, where I grew up. I'd guess that I just used a 1/2" drive ratchet with a 12-point socket. You can tell from the second half (ish) of the video that there is no jack in my way, since it was up on stands by then - on the rear frame just in front of the rear wheels. That allows the rear suspension to drop some distance and give your hands and arms a bit more room. Still not enough for an impact tool, but manual tools worked for me anyway. Good luck with your job - let the penetrant soak.
Update: I was able to break the bolt loose with penetrant but do not have enough room to turn the ratchet enough for the bolt to unscrew. The bolt seems to get kicked back by the rubber gasket(s) so I think my only solution left will be impact ratchet.
For sure, if it's the only thing wrong with your 17 year old car. If your car is like mine, though, there are probably higher priorities. Worse than a missing damper is one that's still there, but it's broken and making horrible sounds. If it's missing entirely it can't make noise - but then it's also not damping noises from the rest of the drivetrain. Manufacturer claims that it's also there to maximize the LIFE of the drivetrain. How long do you hope to drive it?
I just pick it up for a winter car but it's a nice ride would like to keep as long as I can both of the other cars I had I got over 300 on them before they weren't worth fixing

Happy wife, happy life. :) But seriously, if Honda's early engineering tests showed measurable vibration, and the next tests showed that the vibration was largely controlled with the addition of a rubber-mounted floating weight, and so they shipped it that way...my guess would be that lots of guys would choose to live without it after the rubber aged and the weight shook itself free of the car. I wouldn't see a problem with that myself.
If you live on the east where it snows do not try and open this unless you have enough tools i had to cut the mount with saw zaw to get it out and struggled with getting the new one in there is no way you can open the bold its rusted to the mount

Honda never says explicitly what its function is. They probably thought the name "damper" was sufficient. Since that's all we have to go on, it apparently dampens vibration somehow, either isolating passengers from road unpleasantness a bit (though if you drive a CR-V you know that it's pretty "in touch" with the road) or protecting the differential from excessive vibration forces. How a small metal mass suspended in a rubber hanger can handle the kind of forces thrown at it from a typical interstate (you ever traveled crappy I-80 across Nebraska before any of their dowel bar reinforcement?) at 75mph is beyond me - though I am an electrical engineer and not a mechanical engineer. Also, does it filter across a broad band of frequencies or is it meant to be more responsive at a particular more narrow band? Why? This is bizarre arcane magic to me. However, wife and I flipped a coin, dropped the 60 bucks and replaced it rather than remove it. Not sure what I would have done if I had been unable to remove it, though - stripped or broken bolt or whatever. Cut out old one to eliminate the irritating clunk and then return part for $60???? Still driving this old car, by the way.
Hi Mr. Junker, you never show what did you do to put that inside, so I have mine missing for some reason I printed out the picture of that damper and show it to the mechanic, he wants to charge me $200.00 because he said that he will take everything off, it is a big Job. It may look tight our cramped at times in this video, but there is in reality plenty of room to take out the single bolt, pull out the damper, sneak the new one in, and bolt it in place. That's if you jack the car as shown at the beginning of this video. If you go further and out jack stands under the rear jack points (just ahead of the rear wheels in the frame - relatively obvious) and then lower the jack, you will have even more room for gigantic or clumsy hands. :) This is a beginner job requiring the right tools and common sense, not a big brain. Be patient and safe, and you will save money and gain experience and confidence!

How did you get it out? Did you have to let down the sway bar?

Could fill up the holes in the mounts too. Seeing as the dont make after market motor or diff mounts for am 03 5 speed honda crv

Did you have to drop the anti sway bar i cant get enough swing on my ratchet to get the bolt out

If you can get one in there... Do you have the car up on jackstands in the rear so that the rear suspension can fall and give you the most room?
Yes! The rear is on jackstands on the tallest notch.

I would have though that the 2 rubber "teeth" supposed to face down to hit the metal, but guess I was wrong!

I wrapped some duct tape on each ends and some in the middle to keep it suspended. Not spending money on a silly part

That dampener is useless.... removed mine years ago and it affected nothing. Def not worth the price for such a unnecessary part
