The only similarity is thoses game are 2d indie with plateforms (and the plateforming is much more present in rainworld than limbo ) limbo is a classical adventure puzzle : go to puzzle A - finish puzzle A - go to puzzle B - ...finish the game rainworld is a harsh plateformer survival in an open world with a metroivania-esque level design. If you only focus on finishing the game the most direct way you'll find (not talkign about speedrunning) there is plenty of region you'll miss...while an other player who also just focused on finished the game might have gone through completes differents regions. In rainworld you will die ,die ,die ,die not by not understanding some puzzles but byt not understanding the world and it's omni present dangers around you, and you MUST survive, and that one room where you died multiple time? well you MIGHT have to go through it multiple times, so just tryign again and again until you pass might not be enought.
After nearly 300 hours of playing on PC alone: If you're a sucker for a wonderful world of trials, tribulations, and mysteries, then Rain World is the game for you, and I promise it's worth playing to the end - Every area is a brand new experience!
I bought this game a couple of days ago, and why this didn't get more attention? I mean, is unbelievable amazing and well detailed. It is sad that this and others indie gems remain unappreciated :(

I wanna get this game, mostly because it looks absolutely terrifying and I'm already used to the "die, die, die again" loop of games like this, from playing Dead Cells. One problem: I absolutely love the rain.
I once saw a Gamer Played this game, however, he did not played it for long. So, curious, I got the game and try it out myself. And, boy oh boy, I did not know what was waiting for me in this Amazing Masterpiece. It's a good Game.

I read somewhere that this game went under the radar due to the painful difficulty spikes, as the player base for it drop so quick due to reaching some part in the game where people after trying and failing over and over until giving up on it completely and left the game. I remember the devs did say they wanted to update the game to have a tutorial mode for beginners and slightly lower the difficulty, don't know if they did or not.
Took me months to find this game... "black and white pixel platformer game with a weird cat-like creature" - didn't really help but finally was able to find it.
Larisson Williams it’s a lot of fun with friends, but the single player is the main selling point. It’s somewhat roguelike in its progression system, so if you like a challenging game that makes you learn from your mistakes, this game can be for you.

It's definitely one of the most unique platformers I've played, but still manages to be well-polished. It's weakest point, unfortunately, is the tutorial. However, it sets out to make a living world that doesn't feel like a game, and does that. Everything has its own agency. It has a great lore. All the game mechanics tie into it, and I've fallen deeply in love with the game as a whole. (And I'm mainly a strategy gamer, so it takes a pretty special non-strategy game to draw me in.) To kinda decide whether you'd enjoy it, I'd ask these questions: Do you enjoy punishing, yet largely fair games? Are you willing to sink time to learn things for yourself? Do you enjoy having to figure out things on your own? Do you like stealth survival-esque games? Do you enjoy lore stuffs? Do you enjoy complex and dynamic movesets? Do you enjoy great art and a unique style of game?

Well lemme tell you something you gotta study the enemy ai and learn what they do and to get to new worlds you need specific games you can't play this like a regular platforming game other wise you die constantly I'll give you an advanced movement guide if you run and flick your control stick back and press the jump button you do a flip wich is very helpful in a lot of situations if you hold down while falling you can roll on the ground and follow up with the jump button you get a boosted jump you can also slide but you need to press down and jump at the same time to do it. There's a lot of ways to get around in rain world you can pole hop and water skip and everything
i like how people(even youtubers) make the same joke about dark souls, DARK SOULS OF ALL GAMES, to help them chill from this murderously beautiful t bag of a game(thats both a compliment and insult but mostly a compliment to the game) XD
This game is one of my all time favourites, the way creatures behave, the different ways you can approach encounters (sneak by, distract & escape, attack, befriend), the gorgeous environments, seriously it took so many unconventional design choices that you can't find anything else like it
You can't attack or befriend creatures and sneaking is the same as escaping, so there aren't that many approaches, also, i'm sure you can find that in many other games, exanima has alot more ways to approach an enemy, so yeah, not very good review right here.
@@augur8261 you can befriend lizards by feeding them smaller creatures, you can befriend scavengers by giving them pearls or mushrooms. You can attack with spears and stun with rocks...it's difficult and not advisable if you're not feeling confident, but you can do it
@@drGeppo pretty sure that lizards don't die when they're speared, so i wouldn't count that as an attack since there is really no way of killing it by attacking, and again, rain world is not the only game where you can do those things.
@@augur8261 their head is "armoured" so to be effective you need do hit them on the body. Plus different lizards have different stats: green lizard is very dumb and can't climb but has a lot of HP so you need to hit it several times, while a blue one can climb all over the place but you can manage to kill it in 1 or 2 hits.

Agree so much. Especially game essayists need to look at this. It's flawed but its the most impressive game I have ever played (not finished and probably wont). So much to be learnt and appreciated about this gem. That's why this is my most hated game, because I see only wasted potential for a "God"-game. Their marketing is quite bad thou.
Hey comment trawlers! Long-time player here! I just want to let you know that yes, this game is great, although certainly not for everyone. Even from the beginning, you are left mostly to your own devices. The game teaches you the most basic of movement up front, and offers other hints with tantalizing infrequency. This is a survival game, but the emphasis is more on exploring and experimenting. There's a surprising depth to Slugcat's movements, and there's little keeping you from exploring wherever you want, other than your own ability to survive. And there is a lot to explore. If that sounds interesting to you, then look no further. This game is the perfect match for a certain type of player. Just make sure you know what you're getting into so you don't get overwhelmed. It can take some time to get your footing, but the experience is very rewarding once you do. I've yet to experience what changes are offered in the 1.7 build, but I can definitely say I will be buying this version of the game as well. Playing Rain World on the go sounds like a hoot, and Videocult deserves so much more than I've given. The list of games I can pour 500+ hours into is extremely short, and this one of them. My first playthrough alone managed to eat up 40 hours, though your own could look much different-it just depends on how you play and where you happen to go. To those getting into this game for the first time, I hope you have fun! This game has been a great experience for me, and I hope you enjoy it, too.

I kinda rolled my eyes when I first saw this because I thought it was just ANOTHER sidescrolling dark atmosphere indie game. But wow this looks pretty cool.
I can see that, but it leads to really good artistic expression that interlaces with gameplay that is normally polished to perfection. It’s kinda gard to really mess up a 2D platformer
Rain World isn't really depressing... the developers had a clear vision when they decided to work on the game: make you feel like "a rat in Manhattan". You get the general idea of the places you go through, you'll notice some antennas and other familiar structures but it will be difficult to grasp the bigger picture, understand what they are part of. Same goes with the creatures they all look familiar but all are also completely alien. If this game picks your curiosity give it a chance, it will surprise you
This is a hidden gem. Pick it up if you think an immersive, responsive, alien world that tries to kill you at every turn would be interesting to explore.
It's a harsh world where hope is nothing but the punchline to a tasteless joke. Death is as familiar as the dark skies. Any will to live is lost instantly. ... It also has local co-op for you to have fun with your friends together.

I forgot about this game. Markiplier started it and never finished the game. At least on his channel. I don't know if he streamed the rest of it. Looks really interesting though.
he didn't even finished it, he did one video on the very beginning and that's all. He didn't even go through 1/3 of the first region and there is many more regions (all bigger than this one ) And seeing how mark play, he usually make the same mistakes again and again and got emotionnaly overwheilm, and this game punish mistakes. This game will broke mark harder than getting over it.
Wel no, he said he didn't finish it because the game(while amazing) isn't great for RUclips content. You can pull it off, but Mark's style of video doesn't really work with the game.
Loved the game from day one. I suck at it, I’ve yet to even beat it, but I love exploring the vast world and observing all of the creatures that share it with me.
I like the animations a lot, and what looks like a physics engine being influenced by said animations. A lot more dynamic than the stiff, choppy stuff you see in the 300 billion other indie Meteoidvania platformers.
Grim Piñata Definitely a physics based Metroid-vania/platformer. The biggest part of learning how to navigate in the game is getting a feel for the physics.
What nobody tells you about rain world is how unfair it is. Most of the enemies can one shot you and are hard to kill, but I'm not tryna be nit picking. It's good that this game is unfair because it makes you feel like you can never sort of have a very high advantage. No matter how long you play you cannot get stronger, there are no power ups or levels, just you, your skills and a piece of rebar lodged into the backside of a lizard.

This game is as gorgeous as staring at an eldritch being. The only thing I've been playing is rain world for a month now. 9/10 only problem is waiting for that downpour dlc.
edit: for the people who love animal companions in games, yes. you can tame the lizards. edit 2: yes, you can get a plush of slugcat (the character you play as). i think ill put this comment here in case anyone new comes across this trailer and is considering buying rain world. rain world is my favourite game, however its not made for everyone so ill give you a quick rundown. this game excels in: - amazing world building - captivating lore - fitting such a large range of movement into small controls - ai that feels real - creating an atmosphere for each region - creating a challenge (one that i personally found motivating) where it fails is very sparce in my experience, although this is mostly based on my opinion: - the movement system using thumbsticks. i much prefer the steam version to the switch as it is much easier to use a keyboard, however you can always use the arrows when the thumbstick fails, as some things require precise direction (of which is hard to do with the thumbstick) - explaining itself. if you buy this game and get confused by anything, its ok to ask questions, when i first bought rainworld i turned to the community to ask all the things i needed to know, and they happily obliged. the basics the game doesnt explain to you are: 1. the movement system, although you can slowly figure this out on your own i would recommend looking up a guide for more complex movements (such as learning how to slide and put spear ledges into the ground to gain extra height). 2. there are humanoid creatures with spears running around. if you come up to a cluster of them with a large mask thing, throw them a pearl (preferably a white one rather than a coloured one if you are interested in the lore). and 3. hold down and press the button you use to pickup stuff to drop stuff. one of the things that was so great about this game in my initial playthrough was the difficulty. i finished the game in 35 hours, most of the times i was playing were 2 hour sessions, as i would get frustrated and decide to take a break. when i returned, however, and spent a coupled more tries to beat a certain section and finally did it, the feeling of pride at the accomplishment (beating a part of a videogame, how amazing) was addictive. there were parts where i just couldnt beat it, but i overcame these by either trying new routes, or looking up help (one of the regions is extremely hard to beat, however there is a much easier path you can take, if you spend too long on one part its probably in your best interest to look up 'easy route' in case there is one). after my first playthrough, i immediately started a new save file, the ending had gotten my interest and my second playthrough was dedicated to uncovering the lore and story behind the world. this one i used a lot more of a guide to understand the basics of how to do this, but without spoiling the game, it requires the coloured pearls you can scarcely find around the map. beyond that, the game is amazing in terms of exploration. once you get more used to the controls and gain a bit more bravery (most of the lizards you can jump over as the majority of them use a charge attack that takes a couple seconds for them to lunge forwards, or you can use garbage to stun them and quickly stab them several times with a spear by throwing it at them and quickly picking it up before throwing it again) there are over 1600 screens in rainworld, allowing you a huge environment to explore. if you find the karma system too taxing (the ranks you gain when you hibernate / lose when you die) there is an easy glitch you can do to make it obselete, i consider this useful for beginners as it makes the game just a little bit easier (not to mention the speedrunners make good use of this). in the end, do i recommend this game? depends on what kind of person you are, but if you are motivated by challenge, and interested by a huge world and interesting lore, then yes. i 100% recommend this game.

Playing Rain World on the go sounds like a hoot, and Videocult deserves so much more than I've given. The list of games I can pour 500+ hours into is extremely short, and this one of them. My first playthrough alone managed to eat up 40 hours, though your own could look much different-it just depends on how you play and where you happen to go.

I can see that, but it leads to really good artistic expression that interlaces with gameplay that is normally polished to perfection. It’s kinda gard to really mess up a 2D platformer

Rain World isn't really depressing...
the developers had a clear vision when they decided to work on the game: make you feel like "a rat in Manhattan".
You get the general idea of the places you go through, you'll notice some antennas and other familiar structures but it will be difficult to grasp the bigger picture, understand what they are part of.
Same goes with the creatures they all look familiar but all are also completely alien.
If this game picks your curiosity give it a chance, it will surprise you
This is a hidden gem. Pick it up if you think an immersive, responsive, alien world that tries to kill you at every turn would be interesting to explore.

I played this game and it literally rains so hard in this game that it kills the character.
This game is so good, just started playing yesterday and I'm loving every second of it. The way it creates fear of the other animals feels so real.

hey there! i recommend joining the rainworld discord, there is a lot of help to be found on there and they personally helped me get through my first playthrough of the game :D
Or you can just touch grass and interact with real people outside so you wouldn't feel anxious about the littlest of things.

Also if ur still playing it a good tip is that stealth is sometimes the best option, and if you’re able to get into the game it’s rlly good!
(Also if you play as the monk then creatures will attack you less unless provoked)

I forgot about this game. Markiplier started it and never finished the game. At least on his channel. I don't know if he streamed the rest of it. Looks really interesting though.
he didn't even finished it, he did one video on the very beginning and that's all.
He didn't even go through 1/3 of the first region and there is many more regions (all bigger than this one )
And seeing how mark play, he usually make the same mistakes again and again and got emotionnaly overwheilm, and this game punish mistakes.
This game will broke mark harder than getting over it.

Loved the game from day one. I suck at it, I’ve yet to even beat it, but I love exploring the vast world and observing all of the creatures that share it with me.

I like the animations a lot, and what looks like a physics engine being influenced by said animations. A lot more dynamic than the stiff, choppy stuff you see in the 300 billion other indie Meteoidvania platformers.
Grim Piñata Definitely a physics based Metroid-vania/platformer.
The biggest part of learning how to navigate in the game is getting a feel for the physics.

What nobody tells you about rain world is how unfair it is. Most of the enemies can one shot you and are hard to kill, but I'm not tryna be nit picking. It's good that this game is unfair because it makes you feel like you can never sort of have a very high advantage. No matter how long you play you cannot get stronger, there are no power ups or levels, just you, your skills and a piece of rebar lodged into the backside of a lizard.
That's why it's a metrovania

9/10 only problem is waiting for that downpour dlc.

i think ill put this comment here in case anyone new comes across this trailer and is considering buying rain world.
rain world is my favourite game, however its not made for everyone so ill give you a quick rundown.
this game excels in:
- amazing world building
- captivating lore
- fitting such a large range of movement into small controls
- ai that feels real
- creating an atmosphere for each region
- creating a challenge (one that i personally found motivating)
where it fails is very sparce in my experience, although this is mostly based on my opinion:
- the movement system using thumbsticks. i much prefer the steam version to the switch as it is much easier to use a keyboard, however you can always use the arrows when the thumbstick fails, as some things require precise direction (of which is hard to do with the thumbstick)
- explaining itself. if you buy this game and get confused by anything, its ok to ask questions, when i first bought rainworld i turned to the community to ask all the things i needed to know, and they happily obliged. the basics the game doesnt explain to you are: 1. the movement system, although you can slowly figure this out on your own i would recommend looking up a guide for more complex movements (such as learning how to slide and put spear ledges into the ground to gain extra height). 2. there are humanoid creatures with spears running around. if you come up to a cluster of them with a large mask thing, throw them a pearl (preferably a white one rather than a coloured one if you are interested in the lore). and 3. hold down and press the button you use to pickup stuff to drop stuff.
one of the things that was so great about this game in my initial playthrough was the difficulty. i finished the game in 35 hours, most of the times i was playing were 2 hour sessions, as i would get frustrated and decide to take a break. when i returned, however, and spent a coupled more tries to beat a certain section and finally did it, the feeling of pride at the accomplishment (beating a part of a videogame, how amazing) was addictive. there were parts where i just couldnt beat it, but i overcame these by either trying new routes, or looking up help (one of the regions is extremely hard to beat, however there is a much easier path you can take, if you spend too long on one part its probably in your best interest to look up 'easy route' in case there is one).
after my first playthrough, i immediately started a new save file, the ending had gotten my interest and my second playthrough was dedicated to uncovering the lore and story behind the world. this one i used a lot more of a guide to understand the basics of how to do this, but without spoiling the game, it requires the coloured pearls you can scarcely find around the map.
beyond that, the game is amazing in terms of exploration. once you get more used to the controls and gain a bit more bravery (most of the lizards you can jump over as the majority of them use a charge attack that takes a couple seconds for them to lunge forwards, or you can use garbage to stun them and quickly stab them several times with a spear by throwing it at them and quickly picking it up before throwing it again) there are over 1600 screens in rainworld, allowing you a huge environment to explore.
if you find the karma system too taxing (the ranks you gain when you hibernate / lose when you die) there is an easy glitch you can do to make it obselete, i consider this useful for beginners as it makes the game just a little bit easier (not to mention the speedrunners make good use of this).
in the end, do i recommend this game? depends on what kind of person you are, but if you are motivated by challenge, and interested by a huge world and interesting lore, then yes. i 100% recommend this game.
