- It is surprisingly unknown that fossils can be collected on the riverbed of the Tama River.
The Tama River is also famous as the river where the whole body skeletal fossils of the world's oldest sea cow (Steller's sea cow: a branching species of dugong) came out. I think it's a fun place for parents and children to excavate fossils on weekends. If you're lucky, it may not be possible to make a second big discovery of Steller's sea cow. When collecting fossils, the rocks are hit with a hammer, so I would like to have goggles to protect my eyes in advance so that stone fragments can be scattered.
The production area is the Iimuro Formation, which is classified into the Kazusa Group (Tertiary Pliocene-Quaternary Pleistocene 2.8 million to 500,000 years ago). Fossils of crabs and sharks are produced.
