Mackinac Bridge Crossing in a Semi

- This is the most condensed version of this video I could make. In total from one side to the other it is nearly 15 minutes. My first version was too long so I am hoping that being as close to the 10 minute mark as possible that I can give you an idea what a monumental task it is crossing this bridge. Of course it is nowhere near as monumental as the building or maintainace of the bridge, but I hope you find it interesting none the less
Thank you so much for the video. It was so nice to kind of ride along with you. I had never seen the Mackinac Bridge, and I really enjoyed it.
Since I became disabled, I never get to go anywhere, so thanks again.🙂

I've driven across this bridge so many times, but I'm sure it's a totally different experience in a huge truck that big! That's so awesome. Thanks so much for sharing!
Mackinac and Mackinaw are both pronounced with the "w" at the end. I've been on this bridge at least 2 times a year for 64 years and it still makes the soles of my feet tingle from my fear of heights. I'm glad the maintenance is kept up. Some videos of Golden Gate bridge say they haven't painted it in 20 years.
I don’t know I like that sound. Pure memories . Great work👍🏻
Originally being from NYC metro, and all its suspension bridges...I can say that when I went across this bridge, I was very impressed by the long causeway stretch that leads to the center span...
You are quite welcome and I do honestly hope you enjoy your trip! It is really quite amazing, though a bit nerve wracking for someone with a fear of heights. Thankfully I am almost over my fear of heights, so it's not as bad any more, just a bit of tense for me because it is SO hard to cross this bridge with a truck. With a car it's easier, but keeping speed and distance with a truck is a very demanding task! Have fun on your vacation and enjoy!
Thank You For Sharing ❤️
Good video. I've always liked crossing Big Mack. I don't drive but enjoy the ride. I understand that maintenance hardly ever stops taking place on the bridge.
The reasons are kind of complex, but the straits and the bridge are spelled Mackinac. The old french fort on the south shore is also spelled similarly to the bridge... Michilmackinac .The City on the south side of the bridge is spelled Mackinaw City.
All three are pronounced the same, however.... Mack-in-awe
@jrein59 No that is correct. Mackinaw is a different island entirely. Search on google and you will find that it IS the Mackinac bridge.
@scallly64 I did keep it in the appropriate gear, but the issue is that when you are loaded at 79k gross weight, the slope there is big enough that the load just pushes your speed up slowly. You can't use the jake brakes because the gear and speed are so low that it would just bog you down, so really watching your speed and occasional braking is the only real way to manage your speed. Thanks for the comment!!
two things i would never ride in/on to cross this bridge, semi or motorcyle haha.... so spooky in a car... i almost cry everytime i have to cross it
Cool. Thanks for posting this. I got a chance to go over the bridge from the comfort of my home.
Cool video Blackwolf! You ought to see the antique tractors cross this in Sept. Someone told they had 900 tractors cross a few years ago.
Great video! And, as already noted, it is pronounced “Mackinaw” even when spelled ending with a “c”. Thank you for sharing.
I didn't know they required 500 feet apart on trucks, but it does make sense. It lets the wind through. Too many trucks close together would create too much wind resistance, and then a truck gets blown over. The Big Mack can be pretty scary sometimes in ways unexpected.
Well here is the even more comforting thought. That bridge is very near it's design limits with trucks crossing it. Loaded trucks can not pass, are restricted to 20mph and must remain 100 feet apart at all times. If the trucks travel too fast or get too close technically it would be enough to collapse the bridge. So yes it is quite enough to make you a nervous wreck driving an 80k lb rig over that bridge.
I was on the work crew you drove by. You probably drover right by me.
This bridge is call Mackinac it start at Mackinaw City Michigan
It's not pronounced the way it's spelled. I'm from there and believe me it is pronounced mack-i-naw. Honest.
wow thanks,to scary for me to go on it,but I enjoyed you driving
You and me both
The pronunciation of Mackinac & Mackinaw is the same. Since France ruled this section of America Mackinac is the French spelling & pronunciations. When Britain took over ownership of the country they Anglized the spelling ( phonetically ...as it is pronounced..naw). Another way to remember is French above the Straits(...ac), British below(,,naw).
@BlackwolfTrucker The Mackinac Bridge (play /ˈmækɨnɔː/ mak-in-aw) is a suspension bridge spanning the Straits of Mackinac to connect the non-contiguous Upper and Lower peninsulas of the U.S. state of Michigan. notice the pronunciation....I live in Michigan I would know this!
@TheRetiredtrucker Well the bridge is posted for 20mph now for 80k trucks. In all truth, I normally kept it around 18 or so, for the simple fact that on the downside it constantly tries to roll up faster and you have to just feather the brakes to maintain speed. And indeed it is about 2 light poles apart, 100 foot spacing.
+jrein59 I don't even live anywhere NEAR Michican (I live in Southern Calif.) and I also know hot to properly say, Mackinac, "MACK-in-NAW"! I look forward to going near that part and going across...the bridge tower cross girders remind me of the Golden Gate only three, not four down the bridge and very different color...
I'm from New York & crossed Mighty Mac/Big Mac twice...first time I drove it was freaky cuz of the inside lanes on metal grid like a draw bridge, plus it was cold rain...I was struggling to keep straight without slipping into the right lane, yikes!! I loved it, I just wish that NY had suspension bridges with similarly designed towers...ours are just so plain!!
this is located between Mackinac City MI and St Inglace MI. Highway I-75 connecting the upper and lower penninsula of Michigan.
@StayingBack71 LoL I have been over the Rainbow Bridge. I will agree that is a nasty beast. Texas has some REALLY high bridges, the thing that makes this one such a pain is the slow speeds on a high long bridge... it just takes SO much longer. I had to cut this video down 3 times before RUclips would let me put it up. It's actually about 13 minutes to do a full crossing in a truck. Takes less than 5 minutes in a car though XD
its Mackinac I live in Northern,MI I would know.
From michigan, everyone here says it mackinaw hell even some shirts sold in mackinac are spelled with a "w" instead of "c"
If you cross at night, the seagulls sit on the bridge deck and refuse to move until the very last second. One night I had about a dozen of them crash into my antenna.
The most modern bridges where this bridge is at some peoples say it's crossing Michigan's
Folks, it's not hard. Get a map. The bridge, island, and straits are Mackinac; the city is Mackinaw. They are all pronounced Mackinaw, wherever you are from.
@TheRetiredtrucker thankfully I do not have to worry about that any longer LoL I switched to a local job now after the money went away and the stress got too high. I'll stick with hauling my heavyweight produce loads within the 150 air mile radius of the farm. Pays better and home every night!
@watchforfinger Been there and done that ^^ Have to say it is rather exhilarating especially in a semi!
You guys think this bridge is scary....Try crossing the 1000 island bridge on 81 going into canada......just as high but only 2 lanes wide....OR Try crossing the Rainbow bridge in port Arthur Tx.......Very Very Narrow...High and it feels like you are gonna fall off of it ionce you crest the top...... Look these up and youll see
Actually its fun to cross in an empty flatbed...lol 45 all they way as long as no other trucks in the way
@jrein59 The last time I said Mackinaw... I got chewed out by about 3 people from MI so I guess it comes down to the matter of you can't please everyone as it seems that everyone has a different opinion, but, I will keep it in mind... not that I ever GO there any more.
Where is it located at?
where is this bridge at?
Does a semi handle differently while driving on the grated portion of the road near the middle part of the bridge?
Joe Geshel Way delayed in response here... (been neglecting my channel lately) From what I have seen and experienced yes. It very much does effect the way the truck handles as the grating tends to slightly manipulate the truck with the treads of the tire. Which is why trucks are kept in the right lane... except during construction.
BTW How many speeds does your truck have,+BlackwolfTrucker?
Steve Carras WAY late in replying... but, At the time of filming I was driving a 12 speed automatic. Years later, I am back in the good ol crappy 10 speeds. And yes... been given much hell for a slip of the tongue about not pronouncing it correctly. Which is funny because Mackinac Island (pronounced Mack-in-Ack!) is nearby and no one pronounces that any differently!
I lived in Michigan the first 25 years of my life. Any time anyone ever said Mack in ak, they were corrected. Never heard it called Mack in ak Island.
Looks very stressful in a semi, I still prefer walking it on labor day.
Paul Engler As the years go by, it has gotten easier and easier for me to drive over it. Of course a healthy respect of heights still challenges that constantly, but, it isn't so bad.
😨😱
Nope!
you said mackinac wrong! it's pronounced mackinaw!
