My impression is that it doesn't take much to get on the watch list, and Its not obvious that that and the no-fly list are the same thing. Given that there's no real oversight, and you can get put on either list for flipping the bird at a border control lackey, or dating the wrong guy's boyfriend, why should Canada give a damn? Mexicans can enter Canada without a visa thanks to free trade. Most of them enter Montreal or Toronto and its a short drive to the USA. However, we have a same problem with people entering the USA first and coming straight to the Canadian border, which is against international law for refugees, but the USA won't do anything about that. So either both fix the problem or it will never go away.

I am very familiar with this area. I grew up with spending many summers on both sides of the border. I always thought that if a foreign country of malicious intent wanted to invade either part, this would be most vulnerable for both sides. Many people living in this area for generations have families on both sides of the border. And when an outsider is from Mexico or Pakistan, it is not hard to spot.

Both countries are working together to reduce this problem.

Over the last few years I have heard the number of asylum seekers crossing the northern border into Canada have been way higher than the number crossing into the U.S. If this is true it must be the weather, cost of housing and lack of jobs in Canada made them cross back into the U.S.

I am very familiar with this area. I grew up with spending many summers on both sides of the border. I always thought that if a foreign country of malicious intent wanted to invade either part, this would be most vulnerable for both sides. Many people living in this area for generations have families on both sides of the border. And when an outsider is from Mexico or Pakistan, it is not hard to spot.

They strategically settled in Que, right across the border until the immigration to the US became possible. They all came in through Ellis Island and went to Canada. Literally. It's awful. And our county wouldn't even help with funding for the only homeless shelter for our own citizens. Now it's only open a few days a few, limited hours. Now they are all out on the streets again. But, they want us to take in illegal immigrants into our homes and fund housing for them. In michigan for context!

It works both ways. Over 32 thousand tried to cross illegally from the USA to Canada. Canada is closing down some of the obvious illegal crossing sites like Roxham road, and have started to require visas for certain countries. It can be tricky for airport border agents to distinguish tourists and family visits from potential illegal migrants. The northern border isn't quite as out of control as the southern border. Both countries are working together to reduce this problem.

Seal the border with Canada and Mexico and charge the country of origin for the costs of dealing with them. Mexico should be charged trillions of dollars for what they've sent over our border already.

The real problem is the amount of people crossing from the U.S. into Canada. It's convenient that America only sees the other crossings.
Over the last few years I have heard the number of asylum seekers crossing the northern border into Canada have been way higher than the number crossing into the U.S. If this is true it must be the weather, cost of housing and lack of jobs in Canada made them cross back into the U.S.
Nothing to do with jobs. Almost 5% of the people caught crossing last year are on the terrorist watch list.
That means there are even more who weren't caught.
Then there are the ones who we don't know about yet, so they aren't on any list.

Asylum seekers prefer the US over Canada for several reasons. They know the US is the best country in the world.
