- Welcome to another one of my random geography and culture facts videos. So I made this video instead of writing my paper on why the Soviet Union collapsed and now its late. So if you’re like me and going to procrastinate what you’re supposed to be doing right now then I guess you might as well learning something.
Mistake: It’s pronounced Gu luh not Goo luh
It works in reverse, too. I'm a teacher avoiding grading papers
Funfact:The old English word for orange was geoluread, which was literally pronounced yellow-red,
I'm hoping with everything that is true.
Pronounced or translated as?
@@Betweoxwitegan pronounced, if you replaced the g with a y then you can pronounce it
I can read that, it almost looks like archaic norwegian
@@thomaseriksen6885 To me it looks like English with predominantly Germanic and Celtic influences without the French, Spanish, Arabic influences etc.
From the Wikipedia article on East Timor: "Timor" is derived from timur, meaning 'east' in Malay, thus resulting in a tautological place name meaning 'East East'.
I believe that there's a theory that suggests Spongebob and all the characters are based on mutation from all the nuclear testing, hence the weird life, as they live in Bikini Bottom, which means they'd live in the sea somewhere around Bikini Atol. There are multiple clues in the series that would suggest this.
I've always found this subject fascinating. Thanks for covering it. Very interesting.
Thanks for doing what the K-12 schools should be doing!!! I used to teach introductory geography to college 101 students. Some didn’t know blue represents water and green represents vegetation on a map. They learned!!!
Tell me you're joking 😭 how did college students not know that??
For real. I used to teach 8th grade geography. It was a problem when they first came to me. Funny enough, the ones that played a lot of video games such as Fortnite understood maps well.
@@GeographyGeek I learned my Geography from football
I wish this video was an hour long. Great stuff
Fun fact
Since Brazilian Portuguese wasn't influenced by French like European Portuguese, the language remains pretty similar to Galician Portuguese, to the point schools often make children study the letters written during Brazil's discovery in 1500, and they're rather easy to understand
@@SimonSenaviev The french influence in the 19th vocal shift + glotification of the R in european portuguese is debated.
It could've just been a natural evolution.
@@luizfellipe3291 well it didn't happen in Brazil, only in Portuguese and the territory they still controlled
@@SimonSenaviev Yeah. Mostly. Something that did go to Brazil was the glotolization of the R which eventually became an aspiration here (I'm not sure if "aspiration" is the correct word, I mean that the R at the beginning of words and RR conjuction sound like the English H in "house")
(Only in some dialects, others keep the thrilled R)
(This probably came to Brazil by late 19th and early 20th century portuguese migrations)
It is true that We, Galicians, understand much better Brazilian Portuguese than Portuguese from our Portuguese neighbours!
I lived in Galicia for a year and it was interesting learning a bit about their language! There definitely were places that spoke more Galician or spoke more Spanish. Since then I have started learning Portuguese. Galician was heavily influenced by Spanish since becoming a part of Spain centuries ago, and as a result it seems like Portuguese vocabulary with Spanish sounds. Nearly all of the Portuguese vowels and consonants that make it distinct from the sound of Spanish are gone, with the exception of a couple open vowels and the letter x, which is pronounced like the English "sh". There are debates as to whether it's a separate language from Portuguese, and there are some teachers in schools that are trying to introduce Portuguese orthography into lessons (replacing x with j, among others) and having kids write letters to kids in Portugal.

You're doing a great job with these videos about nothing and about everything at the same time. Keep it up.
Another way to say hopefully for us Latinos is the phrase; “Si Dios quiere” (If god willing) pretty much the same meaning as the original Arabic word inshallah
Amazing content as always! Appreciate the education you’re providing. 💡🎉
There is a cave in my hometown in Alabama that is graffiti-ed with Cherokee script in an attempt to preserve the language.
You forgot to mention that Sahara is the Arabic word for desert, so you’d better procrastinate that paper some more and reshoot this video.
Alternatively, if you wish to segue back into your paper, note that Białowieża, the name of the forest where Yeltsin, Shushkevich, and Kravchuk met to dissolve the Soviet Union, is Polish for White Tower. (The Belarusian and Russian names for the forest, Белавежска and Беловежска, mean the same thing)
I feel like my language exploring has taught me more than anything. No more Mr. nice guy! No more parochial thinking! And no more fantastic or terrific ideas.
Major props for the double word name section. Like the ‘Los Angeles Angels” lols.
Can you make more videos about map inaccuracies, legends, and or myths
Working on many more.

Another cool one, Milky Way comes from the latin Via Lactea, which means the same thing, and it's actually its name in many other Latin-derived languages.
The patch on the arm of the soldier is my old infantry unit.
Thing to note about Switzerland, the German they speak is a dialect called Swiss-German (very creative I know). It sounds pretty crazy, I’ve never been able to understand it but I’ve been learning German for a while. Most Germans cant understand it either, but Swiss people learn proper German in school so they can speak both
Yes I love ❤
The superstitious fear of bears is not Germanic only. In many Slavic languages, the word for bear includes the word for "honey".
Isn't brown brown a special cocktail found in East Africa?
Literally me irl
Top ten first viewers!
Yiddish was used by the Jewish speaker and is very similar to German.
5:53 how is it written the name of the tribe?
Pirahã
@@adrianlopezrobinson5176thank you!
Sahara also means "desert in Arabic, so Sahara Desert = Desert Desert.
Aran means valley in Basque so Val d'Aran comes to mean Valley of Valley.
It happens all the time.
is this a reupload?
I was thinking the exact same thing. All of these feel like I heard about them like a week or two ago
Reupload from last night. I made a sarcastic joke at the beginning that I decided I wanted out. On second thought it kind of sounded like I was saying studying wasn’t important.
Hello sir, I will convert your video into Hindi language and upload it on my channel.
Ooooi I’m so behind 😭
I'm kind of sad that you seem to think Brazil is not interesting. The small reference you had, you decided to remove from this same video. It's a shame because I do enjoy your videos and always hope you reference something interesting or new about us. I know you don't have to do it, I'm not offended by it either, just sad. Nice video as always.
@@gus2368 I didn’t remove any content. The only change was the intro. I haven’t done a video on Brazil because I‘ve been waiting incase I get to visit next year. There is Brazilian Army memorabilia all over my office where I’ve worked with them in the past. I’m taking a short Brazilian Portuguese language course through the Army next month.
Edit: Spelling
@@GeographyGeek No worries. I think the fact that I enjoyed your videos and find them very interesting just made me want to hear something interesting about us, like old maps. So I'm sorry if I was unfair with you. Keep it up, I'm kinda watching all your playlists when I'm free :)
@@gus2368it’s all good! I appreciate it. I think Brazil will get a lot of content at some point. I’ve been circling around it with other Latin American countries. I actually have an old map one related to Brazil mostly written but I haven’t decided if I’m going to go through with it or not. It’s on depictions of cannibalism on old maps. I’d like to do some more uplifting videos related to Brazil.
I’m an expert script writer and video editor. I can create engaging and captivating videos for your channel turning into a PROFITABLE one. Looking forward to hearing back from you! Thanks.
Guh luh not goo lah
Thank you. I wish he had pronounced it correctly, but I am thrilled he included it.
@@fuzzyhippos dang, thank you. I just pinned the correction
can you give me a shout out next video?
