The author also started to think sometime when the series was airing, that the anime could not portray his vision in a good way and was being used more to generate money by extending the runtime of the series, rather than to follow the author’s vision. These struggles made the author continue the manga on his own and take away the rights from the company
@Kinda batooni personally I don’t think rukawa is mature at all, he’s probably more naive and a selfish brat to me, he is egotistic and it shows in every match in this series, from not wanting to pass the ball even though he is stuck in an impossible situation, he’d rather force his way out of the enemy defense zone rather than passing to his teammates, lots of times I can’t stand his selfish behavior and the need to overachieve in a team sports, it’s called a team sports, while individual achievement is also important, the greatest thing is to learn how to use your teammates in a team sports and rukawa lack so much in that department; granted rukawa later on learned abt this and is willing to pass balls to other teammates and realize his ego but only cuz Anzi sensei gave him a wake up call so he does not sink deeper in his self inflated ego but to focus on getting better and being humble. But no, he is far from mature, in fact I would say he’s on the same maturity level as Sakuragi
And the only reason why Sakuragi hates Rukawa Is that Haruko likes him, and eventually Rukawa starts to hate him because Sakuragi doesnt take basketball seriously until they lose to Kainan, but by then, the damage Is done, they cant stand each other. And I love how ridiculous the situation Is, reminds you they are just 15 years old kids.
Slam Dunk does not get enough credit in the USA. On top of being comedy gold, it depicts a shonen rivalry in a hilarious way. Sakuragi doesn't stand a chance to reach Rukawa's level from start to finish. The rivalry is one sided, and it's based solely on Sakuragi's bullheaded crush on Haruko. If you can let yourself be open minded enough to accept this story revolves around basketball and get involved in the games, it's a definite nail biter as well. I dumped way too much money in acquiring the official English translation of the manga. It easily surpasses the anime. Also, personally I think most old anime shouldn't be remade. But this one of a very few that should be remade. If it could be done without CGI, adapt the entire manga, and maybe update one or two scenes involving phones, it would absolutely hold up for a very long time.
The dub only lasted 20 straight-to-DVD episodes, sadly...but I loved it. They got the Toronto pool for it, which is rare, and it's uncut. They got mf Rob Tinkler of Pelswick and Sam & Max fame as Sakuragi, Scott McCord of Total Drama fame as Rukawa, Martin Roach of Rescue Heroes and Goosebumps fame as Akagi, and Martha MacIsaac of Superbad fame as Haruko
What i love about Rukawa is that he seems mature and all but he REALLY is almost as dumb as Sakuragi like when he falls asleep almost anywhere even on his damn bike 😂😂 and he even had to study for them to go to the Inter High tournament 🤣😂 They're my favorite rivals even though they're only rivals because of Sakuragi having a crush on Haruko and Haruko liking Rukawa
Their rivalry is so childish because it’s really just because of Haruko that it’s funny. 🤣 But honestly Sakuragi & Rukawa is actually quite alike that if Sakuragi just get past his jealousy and see that Rukawa couldn’t have cared any less about Haruko… they could have been best friends and help push each other to be the best. If they cooperate and team up Shohoku could have actually won. 😆 I really wish we got to see their 2nd year to see their improvement.
one of the best moments in the whole entire manga history is when hanamichi and rukawa high 5 after all of this... there is no other manga about sports that come close to this master piece and its been so many years that its a shame...
