Sam, it's probably long gone but anyone else, do a leakdown and youll likely find valvles open. These cars are known to over pump the lifters hanging the valves open. Let the car sit overnight and crank it in 10 second bursts for a few minutes and youll hear ithe valvers start to seat and then run fine. Normal starting: make sure the car is runnung before releasing the key from start or this may happen. Fairlures that cause equal compression loss across the bank is very rare. Anyone finding this to be true report back.
The day has come, I sincerely wanted to thank you for the tip, made my Mazda up and running again. I had this whooshing noise but the engine wouldn't start. Not sure if it was because the minute before I released the key too early. The fact is that after a minute or so, after several attempts (and gas pedal hit at the end) it seems to be running fine. you must have scope and a Mazda diagnostic tool or a rectable tool that you can see data to see what is going next diagram all problem might be the same but not the symptom, until i know what is going on in car i can decide

You forgot to release the pressure
This the same problem i am getting I change cam and crank sensor no start
Please i will like to know how you fixed your 2006 mazda 3 starting issue, because i'm having the same car with the same issue.
