I'm 73 and have done my skincare routine faithfully both at night and in the morning. The only thing that keeps me looking 73 without makeup are the sun damage brown spots on my face.i was a sun worshipper in my teens, 20s, 30s, and 40s. You got me hooked on the Undefined R&R sun serum, and it’s such a great product, which makes it easy to apply liberally. Great application, great finish, the tint is perfect for me. I was a competitive swimmer and a life guard before we were using sunscreens. I tanned beautifully and had one year round. The sunscreen/wrinkle/skin cancer information became clear when I was about 20. Yikes. So after that, my mantra was if the sun hit my skin I would immediately turn into a prune! So I started using products that had sunscreens and used spay-on tanners for the outdoors. So I had nice skin until I moved to Florida just before Covid. I was still good, but the sun is inescapable here. I am so thankful, that I started listening to you and Dr Dray last year (Did not know about retinol - can you believe it?!). I really have upped my game. My skin does not look as youthful as I would like, but the last time I went to my internist, he made a positive comment on my skin as I am now 72. Just keep at... Thanks so much for the information you provide. kk

    Timestamps for the mistakes:
0:52 Not using enough sunscreen. You need a 1/4 teaspoon for the face and for the neck everyday. Reapply every 2 hours if you're outdoors.
If you're inside all day, reapply a bit at least once in the afternoon (if you can) after your initial 1/4 tsp application.
5:32 Not starting on a retinoid early enough.
12:00 Not being consistent with your skincare routine.
14:22 Using too many new skincare products all at once. Your skin may have an allergic reaction or become irritated.
16:07 Not knowing what ingredients are in your skincare.
Example: You may have 5 products that all have niacidamide. Having too much of a repeat ingredient may irritate the skin and not be as effective.

Hey Angie, have followed you for 6 years now and my own skin has improved by having used many of the products you have tested and recommended as well as the devices. One of the products I know you have completed extensive testing on is Vitamin C. Recently I saw an article that stated that Ethyl Ascorbic Acid is MORE stable and potent than the L-ascorbic acid [Vibriance is a brand that uses Ethyl Ascorbic Acid and I believe Carrot & Stick uses it as well. Please consider testing both the Vibriance brand as well as the Carrot & Stick brand to see if you feel the ethyl ascorbic acid provides even better results than products with the L-ascorbic acid. I have learned so much from you over the years. Unfortunately I didn’t take the best skin care steps until I was probably 40, but now I’m very happy with my routine. For me personally tretinoin from my doctor works way better than the subscription services. I started with a prescription from my doctor, but then switched to subscription services for about 5+ years. I recently switched back to a prescription from my doctor (and added in the ingredients that were also in my old subscription) and the difference in my skin is insane. It’s also more cost efficient for me because I had to purchase the subscription on their time while my tretinoin I purchase as needed and the ingredients I added in are inexpensive. I don’t know why it works better for me, but it really does.

I agree, the plain generic tretinoin works better for me as well. I had to switch to that b/c the niacinamide in the subscription service, as well as in all the other products I was using, was too irritating to me. What other things do you add in to your routine? I am finding I have had to build my routine up too.

Now, although I do have sun damage, my dermatologist says I have great skin for a 61 year old.

I use a niacinamide and hyaluronic acid serum during the day with the La Rosche Posay eye cream under my sunscreen. At night I use an essence followed by the Paula’s choice 2 percent salicylic acid topped with the oil of Olay ultra riche cream; the fragrance free one. About a year ago I started holding off on the salicylic acid 2 nights a week and incorporated the inkey list 1% retinol. However, I watch dr dray and I think the retinol in it is a Retinol ester and is basically useless. Once I use up the current bottle I have I’m thinking about using a prescription retinoid. For reference I have oily skin and sensitive to fragrance; that’s why all of my products are so boring. I have heard about the theory of retinol causing fat loss in the skin. You don’t have to spend $$ on Agency retin A. I think you can get your retin A cheaper from an Rx, use one of the coupon apps. Ask your Dr. for a prescription while you’re in there for another reason. Or Google other ways to get retin A. There are “other” ways to get it in the mail. Also, if you’re going on vacation to another country, you can sometimes get it there. Costco in Tijuana $30, works great, for example. One tube from there lasts about 6 months. Curology or Agency charge you every other month. I have used all 3 of these ways I mentioned to get retin A. They all worked well.

Like you I didn't have young adult acne. I knew people who did and who probably have been using tretinoin for all this time. A very long time ago, a dermatologist gave me some free tiny samples of tretinoin, and said, "If you use it, use it at night, and apply SPF during the day." SPF what. Seriously, what SPF was there back then? SPF 4 from Coppertone? Gross. I couldn't find any SPF that I liked, and the tubes were miniscule, so I threw them away. I started wearing UPF clothing that I purchased one shirt at a time, since they were so expensive, and wearing a sun hat... not all the time, but like when I was digging in the garden. The last places on my body to get a sunburn were my calves and the tops of my feet. Now, I have a huge wardrobe of UPF clothing for all seasons, and even though I have "fashion" clothing, I will almost always throw that over for a SmartWool long sleeve crewneck, and in the summer, the stretchy tops from Sun Precautions. I am extremely fair. Fitzpatrick 1. After vacations, co-workers would crow: "You didn't get a tan!" Even if I'd tried to, it would have been a third degree burn. And I have had enough of those to now fear dermatology appointments. Nine times out of ten: BIOPSY. The RUclips algorithm didn't figure me out until your channel was in its third or fourth year, girl. Thank heavens I found you.

I think that sunscreen manufacturers should use more precise instructions on their sunscreens. 1/4 tsp for face & neck is so much easier to understand or a shot glass for the body than "apply liberally." The NIH has a short article titled "Simple dosage guide for suncreams will help users." For anyone that wants to know how much to apply, not just to the face and such but to other areas of the body.
Completely agree on consistency being key. I can tell when my consistency is slipping and it doesn't take long.
