    Yoshi's Island.
At first, I couldn't get past the idea of leaving stages un-100%'d, and found the game to be a chore because I was too honed-in on that aspect.
I came back to it late last year with the perspective of "to heck with the score, let's just enjoy the adventure".
It is now my favorite Super Nintendo Game.
The moral of the story: Let yourself be less than perfect, sometimes a game is SO MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE if you're willing to let that go.

    • @C_Arson
      @C_Arson 2 месяца назад +2

Amen to that. I tried 100%ing levels in Yoshi’s Island at first, but by world 2, I thought to myself, "this isn't fun" and decided to not stress over the score; just get what I can get on a first run and move on. I started enjoying the game a lot more after that.
I think my willingness to throw full completion to the wayside if it's too tedious/unfun is also why I enjoyed Crafted World more than many others seem to. I didn't bother doing the vast majority of the Poochy missions or the "find the object" missions because I very quickly realized how tedious they would be and ignored them. I also approached that game with a "get what you can get on the first run and move on" mindset, only revisiting levels if I needed more flowers to unlock more levels, which only happened once with the game's bonus levels for me (which thankfully don't require anywhere close to every flower in the game).

    • @savagej4y241
      @savagej4y241 2 месяца назад +1

Yoshi's Island had the exact opposite effect for me- 100%ing the level made me feel like I had fully mastered and experienced that level. I didn't feel the need to do so before moving on to the next level, but did so before the next world area. This was something very different from the Super Mario World and Bros 3 gameplay- it felt good achieving difficult objectives.
Yoshi's Island normalized the idea for me of working to achieve clear objectives in a game one plays for fun, and segued me from platformers being my favorite genre to RPG's becoming so. Yoshi's Island resides somewhere in the middle there for me. I think it might be the perfect platformer to decide if you like these types of elements, period.

    • @C_Arson
      @C_Arson 2 месяца назад

@@savagej4y241 Saving full completion of the levels for later actually is a pretty good strategy; it's a strategy I used myself when I played Kirby and the Forgotten Land for the first time because I was replaying almost every level for missed missions, which bogged the pace down. By world 3 or so, I decided to save the missed missions until after I had beaten the main story, which definitely improved my experience.
I don't completely agree with your last sentence because I do enjoy fully completing levels in other platformers I've played (I just mentioned Kirby, but DKC 2 & 3 are also good examples in regards to specifically the SNES). Yoshi's Island was particularly obnoxious to me because it required you to get everything in one run for any of it to count. In theory, requiring basically a "perfect" run of the level makes them more challenging, but in my experience, it instead felt like the game was forcing me to get a bunch of crap I already proved I could get, just so I can collect the few things I missed. It was more of a pain in the ass than it was a fun way to test my skills imo.
That's why I like Yoshi's Woolly World more. In that game, when you get a Smiley Flower or a Wonder Wool or a Stamp, you keep it; you don't need to get it again.

This happened with me & FF7R. I played like 2 chapters, put it down, and then beat it in 2 weeks before rebirth. One thing I’ve found that works is to divide your time evenly. For example, if a game is 40 hours long, play 2 hours for 20 days (or more if you wish) and it will seem so much more bearable. Do 1 chapter per play session, one section a day, etc. and things will be so much better.

Um... oops I went back to it and it's my favorite *thing* of all time and won't ever be dethroned. It's fitting that you mention Splatoon, because that's a series I struggled to like in the past. I always wanted to like it because I enjoyed its world and characters, but the fact that it was an online competitive game was a huge obstacle for me because I historically haven't handled competition well outside of with close friends (none of whom play Splatoon). I decided to try Splatoon 2 when it was new (I hadn't played the 1st game at the time), and I eventually became so frustrated with it that I dropped it for over 4 years. That means I missed out on most of the splatfests (including Chaos vs. Order) and the shifty stations.
In the follow-up to Splatoon 3, the passion of Splatoon fans on the internet inspired me to give Splatoon 2 another shot. After all, I had grown a lot since 2017, so maybe I would handle it better this time, and I did. Not perfectly by any means, but I was able to get a lot more out of the experience this time around. I finally played Octo Expansion too, which was pretty damn great in my book (I even beat Inner Agent 3 after hours of attempts).
As a result of this positive experience, I bought Splatoon 3 on launch day, and it's one of my most played games on the Switch. It still pisses me off sometimes (despite my personal growth, I still got burnt out on it for a year and didn't come back until Side Order rejuvenated my love for it), but I can handle the heat of competition much better than I used to, now understanding that these kinds of competitive experiences can't be "beaten" in the same way single player adventures can, and that's wonderful in its own way. Of course, it helps a ton that Splatoon has plenty of great single player content to enjoy when I'm not in the mood for the multiplayer.

Don't hate me but this was me with Chrono Trigger. I wasn't always an RPG person and I've been spoiled by newer games, so playing a game where I'm wandering a medieval ren fair with redhead Goku wasn't exactly blowing my mind. Even when I time traveled, it got better but I still wasn't hot on it. I kept taking breaks and forgetting I was playing it. A friend pushed me to pick it back up and for whatever reason the music started hitting me right, I met Frog and that Lavos reveal got me a little hype. • @savagej4y241
      @savagej4y241 2 месяца назад

I think its because Chrono Trigger takes a while to get going. It sort of plays with the time travel idea and at first you go, "Oh, that's neat, whatever," but then you get thrown into a post-apocalyptic future and go, "Oh, now we have something to work with." Dealing with Magus feels like a climax but its the midway point, then seeing the birth of Lavos and going through the pivotal events of 10,000 BC to me are the high points of the story. You witness the apex and fall of multiple empires throughout history, and ultimately the ending is so hopeful that its too good to be real... But its definitely the kind of future most would want, I think.
(Then of course Chrono Cross just annihilates that hope, but I digress...)

No one crucify me, but I gave up on BOTH breath of the wild and Metroid dread when I first played them. I'm used to linearity and structure so those two games were intimidating to me at first. But after retrying them multiple times, I fell in love with both games and now I wanna wanna play all the games in both series!! Always worth giving all games a second chance!

Very similar situation: I had recommended Outer Wilds to my cousin, but he bounced off after a few hours saying he was stuck. I asked to sit down with him and watch him play, and it really helped him out. I didn't spoil any puzzles or anything, but just offered a bit of guidance. He said my best advice was "you aren't stuck if there are other places you haven't explored yet". He went on to finish the game and counts it among one of his favorites!

I was not into JRPGs for the longest time. My preconceived notions of the genre kept me from playing many incredible games cause as a young kid, I thought “turn-based combat SUCKS!”
Then, one day, in the summer of 2020, I decided to finally give this genre people love so much a shot. I played the demo for Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age: Definitive Edition on Switch to grab every spirit in Smash Ultimate initially, but that demo intrigued me enough on its own to play it for real.
Many weeks later, I beat it, and I came to see how much of a fool I was for writing off a entire genre just because I believed that turn-based combat could never be as tense as real-time combat. HOW WRONG I WAS!!
That one game made me a new Dragon Quest fan(waiting on the Erdrick Trilogy to drop to play more of it), and finally pushed me to explore more series I have come to love. From there, I have now played and beaten Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Persona 5 Royal, Shin Megami Tensei V, Persona 5 Strikers, and Persona 4 Golden(currently playing enhanced version of SMT V, Vengeance)
Needless to say(for those who can see my pfp in detail), I have gone on to making SMT/Persona(or Megaten) a HUGE part of my personality, for better and for worse(jokingly, ofc). I still love Fire Emblem and Dragon Quest, but Megaten has become a very special franchise to me, and I can’t imagine my current life without it.
All because I decided to play DQ XIS in the middle of the pandemic.
So yeah, what this man said!
    DON’T GIVE UP ON GAMING!!

It was the opposite for me, I didn't like the absolute precision demanded in the NES titles, but Mega Man 7 felt a lot more forgiving, and had all those hidden extras, making it the first mainline Mega Man title that I actually finished.

Brandon! This was such a good video! I love giving games a chance whether they’re typically something I play or not. I think there’s almost always something you can enjoy or at least appreciate in a gaming experience if you try. There’s also something oddly comforting in coming back to games I’d dropped with a fresh perspective, so def couldn’t agree more with this 💜

For me it was halo. I first played it at a friend's place from school and it didn't work. The guy was obnoxious and not really willing to tone it back for me. Couple with me not typically liking shooters and I thought that was it. A few years later my best friend to this day sat us down on halo 2 and we cleared it in two nights together in a series of massive 12 hour long sessions. He slowed his pace down for me and let me absorb the lore of it all and I loved it. I still love halo lore to this day and it led me to realising that what I really love about games is the stories, both from the games and the players. Even a simple cliche story is wonderful if it's told properly and the mechanics surrounding it are interesting.

It's nice to see a video with an encouraging message like this. It's easy to give up when a game just doesn't hit the first time and I definitely have a couple of games I think I should try to go back to after hearing this.
I used to hate Sonic Colors when I first got it as a kid, I didn't like the fact that it was primarily 2D and not fully 3D in gameplay. But when I got a bit older and decided to try to accept the game for what it was it became one of my favourite sonic games. I think that I might need to try to do the same with Pikmin 4.

Therefore i have to live these games all over again by playing them alongside my friends, just how your friend played outerwilds with you. and it was like playing them for the first time all over again. i cannot recommend enough playing more games with friends if you ever get the chance. its amazing

I remember putting down Metroid Dread for a while, thinking that maybe I didn't have the skills required to beat the bosses and solve the puzzles. But a few months down the line, I picked it up again. Perhaps after other games trained up my reflexes, I ended up 100%-ing Metroid Dread.
I almost never 100% games; I could count my completed games in one hand. But Metroid Dread just made me understand the appeal of the Metroidvania genre. That feeling of getting stronger, and returning to that once-impenetrable room, and conquering it.

I wanna share my story. I first played VA-11 Hall-A in early 2018. That was the first game I ever bought on Steam. I remember looking up the reviews at the time: 98% positive. I was like "how is this possible? is this game that good?" Well, I played it, and for a game that had "Cyberpunk Bartender Action" in the name, there just wasn't a lot of action. Long story short, I didn't like it, and stopped playing after just a few hours. Later in 2019, when the game arrived on Switch, I bought it again just for nostalgia sake (late 2017 and early 2018 was a very special time for me). And guess what? The same thing happened. I did not like the game one bit. I felt so dumb for buying the same game I didn't like twice, so I pretty much forgot about it.
Fast forward fiew years. It is now 2024. I wanted to play something that didn't require a lot of effort and didn't cause that much stress, and I saw this little game sitting on my Switch library. This time I said "I know that this game is and what it's not" so, with my expectations now in check, I gave it a change for the third time... and I became hooked. The setting, the lore, the characters, the humor, the easter eggs... but most importantly, THE MUSIC!!! This is a game I couldn't have enjoyed six years ago. A lot of time needed to pass for me to appreciate it, and here I am. Sometimes you just need to wait for the right time for a game to click on you. I have currently got one ending and I'm hunting for the other five on my own. I am so glad I gave it another chance, even if it took me years to do so. I still find it hard to believe that I had been missing out on this for so long.

I played up to around the end of the first disc back in 2020 while my Switch was being repaired and haven’t been back since. I think this video inspired me to come back to it once I’m done with Lego Star Wars 2 and GTA BoGT. Almost done with those two wouldn’t want to drop them right at the end to come back to MGS and have those two be in the same spot MGS is in rn 😅.

Metal Gear Solid and Chrono Trigger are probably the two most dramatic examples of games that just didn't click for me the first (or even second) time around, and then I came around to loving after giving them another try. MGS frustrated me and I just couldn't get very far in the game (in hindsight, I'm positive that the TV I originally played it on must've been set too dark, because I truly had so much trouble just seeing where anything was). I played it again a few years later (via The Twin Snakes) on a better TV, and practically inhaled the whole game over a weekend, and almost immediately ran out to buy copies of Sons of Liberty, Snake Eater and the PS1 version of MGS once I was finished.
Chrono Trigger had the issue of almost impossible expectations; whenever a game has a reputation like, "this is the greatest RPG ever made!", it's hard not to not have that color the experience, and I've found that even the best games can feel wanting when you enter them with that as your baseline expectation. I started it a couple times, and while I thought it was good, it didn't blow me away or hook me and I'd usually fizzle out somewhere around when you first go to the distant future. Gave it another go several years later when the DS version released, with a more modest mindset, and had a total blast.

I rarely don’t finish games but if I stop playing a game for long enough then I might not return just because there are other games that catch my interest (plus time is a limited resource)
Most of the games I have played but not finished:
-Fire Emblem Awakening: fun game but each stage takes an hour to complete (plus I killed an optional party member that I could have recruited so if I return it will likely be from the start)
-LBX: I watched and enjoyed the anime before playing the game, only to realise the game just the anime story
-Etrian Mystery Dungeon: I don’t know how I am suppose to play this game, is there even a story? You start with being able to pick 4 team members and then what? You just complete each dungeon that becomes available?
-Skyrim: played through the intro, explored the map from corner to corner, had my fill before starting any of the quests
-Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga: honestly, would have preferred a more linear experience such as in the Complete Saga game
-MegaMan Battle Network: I feel out of my depth with the whole chip mechanic, I haven’t even touched the default deck of chips because I just don’t know what deck would best suit my play style
As for some of the other games I haven’t finished, I either have them as “I play through them in short bursts and eventually they will get completed” or “I enjoy playing the game but I know I will never finish the game”

It really is funny just how common the exact experience with MH where someone plays one of the games, bounces off of it very quickly, then plays a different one a few years later and becomes obsessed. My guess is that more than just the lack of handholding in earlier titles, MH is a series that really asks you to meet it on its own terms, so someone entirely unfamiliar will usually be caught completely off guard, but when someone has an idea of what they're getting into, it definitely helps the whole thing click.

For me, there were a few games that I ended up dropping that usually was because of them being too hard or me getting lost/not knowing where to go. The 3 main ones that I can think of are Return of the Obra Dinn, Metroid Dread, and Death's Door. Since I started my backlog journey at the beginning of 2023, I got around to picking up and finishing all of these games. Return of the Obra Dinn is a masterpiece that everyone should be able to experience the pure joy and adrenaline of figuring out the mystery. I finished that in May 2023. Metroid Dread was my first Metroid game I played, and it was a fantastic entry to start with. Amazing design, boss fights, and overall world design and lore were all meticulously crafted. I finally finished Metroid Dread in July of 2023. And Death's Door is an indie darling that has awesome combat and fights, hilarious writing, among many other things. It was a fantastic game that I'm glad I was able to finish, and I completed it in January of this year.

I legit had a similar experience with Nier Automata, where I played the first few hours while in the desert but the game didn’t immediately hook me. To the point where I put it down for several months. However, once I got to the Adam+Eve fight, it captured my interests and I got endings A-E, and I’m most certainly glad I did due to being a truly magnificent experience. I beat it shortly before Nier Replicant dropped too, and so I ended up having even more Nier to enjoy!👌🏽
I also didn’t play Xenoblade 2 until half a year after it’d released due to finding the designs too sexualized anr the characters too cliche and “anime” compared to the first game, which I held up on a pedestal. And despite its slow beginning and steep learning curve, I ended up heavily enjoying it and placing 200+ hours into it collectively doing every quest, getting every rare blade and even doing the DLC, including Torna. I’m glad I managed to push through my pre-conceived biases, or else I would’ve missed out on one of my absolute favorite Switch games.

Later om I was proven dead wrong more enemy variety, having 4 weapons and using tricks and keeping the combo meter active made it one of my GOAT games. It truly is amazing to see a slow start turn into something amazing.

2 for me. I bounced of Hollow Knight hard the first two times I tried it. I went back in almost a year after the 2nd attempt and this time it clicked. I suddenly got why people loved it.
The second was Elden Ring by which I mean the whole Souls genre. I'd tried Dark Souls and had a miserable time, but a friend who was really into the series encouraged me to give Elden Ring a try. With him helping nudge me towards mechanics I could have missed, suggesting 'helpful' directions to go in which don't have any ambushes, and keeping the 'hit list' of bosses I had died to a few times and needed to come back to I had a lot more fun. Heck I did every major boss in the base game (although I did need player summons for Malenia and the final boss). The social element made it a lot more fun. We're currently doing the DLC - he's managed to sink about 15 more hours in than me so far, so we've got the same system in place.
Having said that there are games I have bounced off, tried again, and bounced off again. Bayonetta being the first one that springs to mind.

As someone who regularly does this and forces myself to finish games, I'm honestly not sure I entirely agree. Sure, there have been games that didn't click first and by sticking with them I came out of the experience adoring it. Xenoblade 2 is my big example. But I have also endured through countless hours of many games that I just hoped would become enjoyable to me at some point, then never did. After loving the first game, I pushed entirely through horizon forbidden West. It was 2 years on and off playing it and waiting for that click before I finally finished the game to a resounding meh. I don't look back on that experience fondly, I look back on it wishing I had spent my time doing anything else.

Go back to the first Horizon and see if you still hold it in high regard. This can happen sometimes with some sequels, before realizing whether the previous entry really was more enjoyable or if it just had a sense of newness to it that felt good at the time.

Fallout 3 is the absolute best example for me. When I retried the game a year later after release I was hooked. It opened many paths to games I would never have played, including future Bethesda titles and similar titles like mass effect.

I would mostly agree about trying different genres and things you aren't into could lead into discovering more things you like as long as you don't overly force it. Your taste will probably continue to change throughout life. Sometimes you like a certain thing and that is okay too. Sometimes I spent so much trying different things for the sake of trying to venture out to no avail and went back to playing what I always liked. Sometimes I come across games like with Splatoon that I know I would enjoy despite not liking shooters.

i used to hate roguelikes, but i've always liked rhythm games. after playing and loving crypt of the necrodancer, i suddenly started to get sucked into so many other roguelikes which i didnt initially enjoy. i think if a game in a genre you arent generally into offers a unique twist that appeals to you, it can help you appreciate the genre a lot more, like how earthbound's humor and aesthetic helps a lot of people get into RPGs

This exact thing happened to me with a few games: DBZ Kakarot (took my 3rd attempt to fall in love with it) and believe it or not: FINAL FANTASY VII

Red Dead Redemption 2 was a big example of this for me before. I played maybe 6 hours and shelved it for a month before coming back. I finished it recently and I gotta say it was an excellent experience, just a slow burner.

I LOVE this video/concept. Way too many people are so quick to just give up. It’s a horrible habit imo and leads to the inability to adapt. I get it, there’s so many things out there, but sometimes you’ll be missing out on your new favorite thing if you don’t take the chance.

This has happened with many games for me. Symphony of the Night was one of them. I couldn't really get into the game the first time I played, but when I tried again later, I found myself trying to collect everything throughout the map! And this is coming from a metroidvania fan.
If you can't get into a game, it's certainly not your fault, but it's not always the game's fault either.
You should give Federation Force another shot. It's great with friends.

The first time I played hollow Knight, it didn't click. Put it down for over a year I believe. Came back to it one day, back when my backlog was far smaller, and it clicked. Giving games multiple chances doesn't have to be a waste of time. It can be, but time could be all you needed to get over the entry barrier to something you love.

This was me and the Yakuza games. I rented the first one for PS2 back in 07 and it didn’t grab me at all in the 2 hours I played. Never touched again. It wasn’t till I saw 0 at a press show’s coverage (think TGS) the year before it came out in Japan that I wanted to try it out again. I then saw Japanese reviews say how good it was. So I waited for the English release.
It started probably the best gaming string I’ve ever had (Spring-Fall 2017) with Yakuza 0, Horizon Zero Dawn, BotW, Persona 5, Nier Automata, Mario Odyssey, Wolfenstein 2, Cuphead, Splatoon 2, and so many more games occupied that time.
What’s more I fell in love with Yakuza/LaD as a series and played so many back to back after that.

Dude, I have at least 500 unplayed/unfinished games in my backlog on Backloggery to go through.
I'm wondering if I'm even gonna be able to not give up on all of them.

Don't buy any new games until you're finished with at least every 10 unfinished games. Not great for keeping up with social trends, but it is great for your wallet.

I bought mh3u on a whim as a kid. Got to that one quest where you can meet Lagiacrus early and wimped out, never played again. Years later in college my bf got into World. Watching him made me want to play so I tried it. Now I have probably close to 1000h in the series.

I remember when I was little, I played Rhythm Heaven DS but had no clue on what rhythm even was, so I was constantly using visual cues. Somehow got to Rhythm Rally (the stage after Remix 1) and just couldnt beat it.
Long time later, I found it randomly and decided to give it a shot, and now I've perfected every game to their fullest.
Another game I remember is Yo-kai Watch. I played the first game and beat it, and some time later got both versions of 2 for my birthday, played the game at the time but never really got into it.
Some time later I was bored and decided to go through my 3DS games to see what to play, found Yo-kai Watch 2 and decided to play it since I remembered at least liking the game. And now I cant get enough of it. It’s become one of my favourite game series of all time

There are so many games I have yet to play, even amongst series that I like, and games that I've been meaning to replay, but I feel like this video really goes to show how much our perspective is shaped by how much attention we give to it, either by ourselves or if we have the confidence to share that love with others. Really interesting.

This is what happened to me with The Last Guardian. I love Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, so when Trico started acting up, I gave up. I came back to it a year after its release and all of a sudden it just clicked, and I beat it within a few days.

I remember being very young. I almost got close to beating New Super Mario Bros. U before ultimately giving up. Few years later, I revisited the game and defeated Bowser, thinking that was it…
Until now, when I decided to collect every Star Coin in the levels. As of now I’m currently trying to get the second one in Pendulum Castle (Superstar Road-8).
There are also other games I have beaten, but not fully completed yet. I have intentions to try to complete those as well. Oh, and as for games I haven’t beaten at all yet, I’m currently going back to playing the original GBA version of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and THE iDOLM@STER SP; maybe even Super Mario RPG. Figured you should finish what you’ve started.
