It's not dumb that the school doesn't let him use a Sword. It's a MAGIC school. Even if he used it, he wouldn't get any points for it in class, that's what the Praxis credits and the dungeon are for. This is a test of MAGIC. And yeah, it's frustrating for him too, but those are the rules and the show isn't at fault for following its own rules.

As for proving himself to everyone in academy, unfortunately it look like he already gave up on doing that since long time ago because no one appreciate his super human strength back then (doesn't help that Edward just look down on his strength recently too). Really disappointed in this episode full of infuriating conveniences for lame setup. Especially the part where instead of punching the guy in hand's reach our MC let's him put out his weapon and gives him space to do whatever he pleases, after initiating the encounter and not following through.
I honestly feel infuriated with the episode, in both good and bad way~ The good way is the garbage attitude of the magic elitists which was meant to piss you off. The bad way was the fact that Will just isn't allowed to be armed with his sword, heck even a dagger despite the fact that he can accomplish the goal of the class to beat the golem-- that just doesn't make sense. It's like the show is purposefully giving Will handicaps on the types of tests that he's good at that he has no choice but to follow despite displaying his physically ability, experience, and ingenuity in overcoming trials in the dungeon which is way worse that whatever they had in class. I'd understand if it were some kind of trial where he had to use magic for other utility purposes, heck if being a Magia Vander means he had to use magic to set up that sky barrier thing, I'd understand if he never gets to that goal--- but in a combat scenario? There is just no way he has to be held back by that. And lastly for both good and bad, I feel pissed at Will for holding back during the bar fight, he's fought on an ice environment no sweat in the last episode but then now gets troubled with the ice attacks in the bar? He would've easily smashed all of their heads in or at least end up in a stalemate but no he ended up "trapped". Despite having the ability, he didn't give validity to his anger. Which is a good thing for that some amount of patience he has as a character, but man... no one is that patient and the suspension of disbelief is really getting weak on me. Plus he should've broken the wand in the end there~

They made Will lose quite a bit of backbone just to make Julius appear more annoying because Sion can't fill the "Snobby guy who hates people without magic" role now. Seriously, he was just going to give up and fail as a whole until Julius began messing with dwarves. On the surface it's just showing Will's nature of helping others. But it also means his promise to Elfaria wasn't as important considering that he did decide to join at the end, just for another reason.
Will follows the "throw alcohol on me, bully me, I don't care, but... If you insult my friends" mentality that Luffy in One Piece has. It's not that big a deal. People try to bully him, he doesn't really lift a finger, but someone close to him is when his true self emerges. Man just doesn't have time to care about those who directly come at him.

The problem is he is willing to join the tournament to protect his friends but he isn't willing to join it to keep his promise to Elfaria, the main driver of his character. It basically shows keeping his promise isn't really that important to him since he was just planning to not join.
