100% As long as you don't misrepresent it as new, a working part now is almost always better than a marginally better part later. Also, better for the environment, not just throwing out perfectly functional components.
Us old timers understand something you young bloods don't. That is a promise made is a promise kept. There used to be a day in this world when a mans word was his bond. It's not always about the cash. And there is another little something out there especially in the last 20 years. I like to call it "last one to touch it syndrome." That means once you have done any repairs to the equipment. Every thing that goes wrong with that equipment from that point forward. It's your fault. Been there done that got the T shirt. Hundreds of times.
The customer is obviously fine, and I'm sure she is glad you got her AC running when it was 95 out. Better than waiting a day with no AC. Once I had to go take care of this 90-year-old customer, who's AC was freezing up intermittently. After some investigation I figured out that the blower relay would heat up and cut out. I wanted to put a new relay on and this old lady's friend came over and gave me holy heck for trying to rip her off. "Because if it was freezing up, the problem had to be outside." I said no the blower is cutting out making it freeze up. "oh no you're trying to rip her off." So I went back to the old lady and told her what I wanted to do, and when I did it, it fixed it. Everyone's a presumptuous know it all these days.
Hater's gunna hate - I, for one, am extremely appreciative of what you do and how you do it (both in the trade and in presenting it to all of us on a regular basis)! Thank you!
Yeah I remember that Ted. I thought you handled that very well. That was the worst helicopter I have ever seen. There was nothing wrong with you putting a use capacitor on her condenser unit. You didn’t have a new on your truck. It was last call of day and hot outside. You were doing her a big favor. I don’t understand how people could criticize great customer service.
The worse helicopter I have ever encountered was in Asheville, NC where I was installing a fancy pump and lighting system for a downtown water fountain located in the center of the main bus stop area. I had installed the power and control panels as the fountain was being built and had come back to wire in the pumps, the spray ring, and the underwater lights. The control panel was low to the ground and I was sitting on my butt reading the wiring diagram and connecting the wiring. A drunk guy kept watching me and over time, he worked his way over to where I was sitting. He kneeled down behind me, placed his chin on my shoulder, and started telling me how to hook everything up. He stunk so bad I nearly puked. He was so intent on telling me how to do my job, he didn't notice me motioning to a cop who was patrolling the area. The drunk was hauled off, I shook the smell off me, and went about finishing what I was doing.
Always drives me nuts seeing hvac equipment installed like that where it's impossible to service or replace a blower motor or any other component. Installed problems.
You were SUPER patient with her at the time and getting her going with a perfectly good used part that you disclosed was used and didn't charge for... is perfectly reasonable and... look... it got her through the rest of summer without issue. So... no issue.
People on the internet are just nutballs. I don't care if you used bubble gum, you got her up and running and she didn't die from heatstroke. You are a hero in my book.
Saying crispy to myself as you first started to poke at it with the stat driver to you saying “he’s…. Crispy” made my whole night Wish all the og’s had RUclips channels for more iconic moments like this. You’re so natural
I often carry a few used components for situations like this. A pretty much brand new part that was installed and came out shortly thereafter as the units they came from were replaced. No charge for the part and it’s helped some people who may not have a lot of money.
We stayed at a cabin in Tennessee this past week and it had a fairly new carrier gas unit and the blower motor ran from the time we got there till the day we left (6days). Called the maintenance guy and he said it was throwing several codes, probably needs a board, and left. Heat still worked fine, just couldn't turn off the fan lol
I don't know what was the fuzz about that used capacitor. On a hot day, I'd be happy with ANY capacitor or bunch of paralleled caps that would enable it to run a.s.a.p. You provided the best service one can get. You made that happen for free and you replaced the temporary cap with a new one during another service call. Perfect. But that fan. Being 20 years old, being jammed by a bird. Suffering there, powered but inhibited to turn. And running again, after being freed up. I bet, on modern equipment, the fan would just burn out. They don't make 'em like they used to. This one was built to last forever. Nowadays, they're just built to survive the warranty.
Hey Ted. First off. Thanks for all your great videos. Long time subscriber and saw the first video back when you downloaded. You did right in my opinion on the cap the way you did it without charging. Any other company would of gave her a 200% mark up on a new dual run cap. In my opinion and experience in the trade you have 2 kinds of service techs. Techs that are trained for sales and the true old school seasoned tech that will take the time to fix the equipment even if it is 25 to 30 yes old and not push a sale but professionally comment on age of equipment. You planted the seed and that's how you keep your customers. Always an awesome job done on all your videos. Always appreciate old school techs. You and Steve Lav both. Happy Holidays
I use to work for a company like the first one you described, hated every minute of it. Nothing but greed. I'm now with one who cares about customers. I don't feel pressured to sell anything other than what needs to be sold to fix the issue.
@macmac3374 I get what you are saying but it is necessary to point out to customers when a furnace is due to be replaced and why. Give them the quote and hopefully you will get the business when they are ready to pull the trigger. I was a lube tech at a dealership ... I made as much money as many of techs pointing out problems I saw and what I would do to fix. About 50 percent of time people had me fix the things that I saw. I looked at it as good for them, good for me since I made more on customer pay jobs versus what factory reimbursed for warranty repairs. My point is te hs make the best salespeople and if you worked for me I would be expecting you to at least offer customer service on stuff that needed to be done. You don't get business if you don't ask.
Thank goodness for Goodman. I've probably taken dozens of birds and bats out of draft inducers, and the motors always started after. It probably did some damage to it. But on a 20 year old furnace is it worth replacing?
We see birds in chimneys often. Took a 5 gal/ bucket of them out of one once. They set on the chimney to get warm then pass out from carbon monoxide and fall in. Just another day in HVAC!
Sometimes I’ll use red rtv to use as a seal for the inducer motor or anything of a combustion seal it’s a high temp sealant and I also use it on heat exchangers
I once did the same thing, didn't have a t-stat on the weekend (didn't charge her then) and I told the lady I would put in a used loaner t-stat till Monday, come Monday I call her that I'm ready to install new one and she just said its working fine and just hung up, sister in laws sister blocked both of them.
That's why if I put on a loaner I stick it in the blower compartment. Most won't go in there to turn the heat up 2° so I'm guaranteed to go back with a new stat
The old guy that I apprenticed under always said, bring in your bag/toolbox full of tools so you look like a professional HVAC tech. Nothing pisses off a customer faster than a guy running to his truck for the right tool when the customer is paying.
You're right about that, especially in a big city, image is everything. They want to see new tools, a clean crisp uniform, and the service done in 30 minutes, even though they're paying for an hour just for a diagnosis. An experienced tech really only needs a few tools and a meter, to diagnose the problem, and it's hard to keep clean when you're working in some of the hottest and dirtiest environments.
When I was in business I could fix anything, but dealing with the public was not my fortay. I think ur excellent with customers. Better than I ever was.
I"m right there with you on the basement thing. What was the person who installed that thinking?! Those open frame shaded pole motors are pretty hard to hurt. In regard to a video where I provided a used blower wheel to a customer, someone actually asked me if the customer paid for a new or used part. Right or wrong, I'm a big believer that if one's not honest, they won't be in this or most other businesses for very long... I hope the bird didn't suffer too much before it passed away. Not sure if I would have been strong stomached enough to get it out of there, even as crusty and dried up as it was.
Best thing you did was not return with the new capacitor...she wasn't out any money that entire time and had A/C ! Now this time, its a combo discount to free the bird ! Looked like the bearings were still good on that fan and it didn't sound bad but as a service call plan, best to at least offer a replacement due to the heat it was likely subject to being jammed up. Good to know about the comments on the other video...I read most of them and likely not the ones that were deleted. Everyone has their opinion...not everyone has logic.
Up here in Canada that furnace would have been condemned just because of that flue pipe is a fire hazard even if it was installed in 2002. Still has to be up to ode when we go to a call or the gas gets shut off.
Great job Ted. With just a meter, screw driver, and flashlight you sure can work wonders. You're a professional service technician with excellent customer service skills and I really enjoy your videos so keep'em coming. Do you every take pictures of the heaters/AC units to show the customers the problem areas? Just curious.
My Mom had a duplex that was so low to the ground that the only way to get to one of the 2 floor furnace heaters was to crawl between the floor joists and crawl backwards to get back out. No fun for sure.
There must have been odors getting into the house for several days. I guess he was looking for an exit from the flue. HVAC service isn't always glamorous. The installers are going to earn their pay replacing that unit. Maybe you could sell her a package unit?
love your videos learned tons. but why are you not checking the heat exchanger on a system with that age? also do you think putting the inducer motor back without barely any gasket could leak CO into the space?
If something burns clean, there won't be co. No flame disturbance when the blower came on. Not everyone has time to pull ductwork apart to check. You might see a crack with a camera but a camera can also mislead you.
If she wants a second visit she should pay. I don’t know the answer about helicopters but for for many folks it’s a lot of money. They for the most part aren’t qualified to question you, but they are needy and need to soothed. It’s a people business at some level. Love your channel
I watched the other one and now I know she had her dad to look after and wanted not to have to think about that. That said…helicopter. Me I like to know how things work. You do right by your customers maybe give ‘em’ ground rules. “ I need three feet or have them hold something that doesn’t break. She seemed better this time. I always have questions, if I am paying $300-500 for something I want to know what is being done. That bird was alive? I swear I didn’t hear it chirp, if he was alive he wasn’t long for this world.
In reference to the used part, I just had a new inducer and dual pressure switches installed on my 16-year-old furnace. I intend to get a new furnace come the Spring. I was thinking I would be kind of foolish to remove these parts when the new furnace is installed, but it's obvious the installers would probably reuse the newer parts on another job, at my expense.
Ted I'd be lying if I said I didn't put a used run cap on a unit to get them going in the summer we are not cap r us we do run out or maybe it's a strange size but let me tell you something that used cap probably out last half of the new one crap I've had many caps new fail litterly the next day weeks months lmao so great job as always
You should get yourself one of those new digital DBE tools with the corresponding phone app to control it (Danfoss Bird Extractor). I've seen this sort of problem in the field many times before. Typically a scenario like this starts when a technician sends in a spider to get a fly, then sends in a bird to get the spider... and so on. You don't want to roll up on a job like this after it gets to the cow stage.
a lady called me and stated her washing machine was possessed...i thought she was drinking to much...however while i stood there and told her there was nothing wrong with her new whirlpool washer ..it fired up and started to dry agitate. i remove the back cover and there was a dried up mouse with his teeth sunk up in the wiring harness.. i guess when it got humid enough it carried voltage and started the washer up..you just never know what your gonna run into out there
Hey Ted, I'm just a DIY-er, mechanic by trade. I can usually fix anything that needs fixing. I don't know everything, but I know people that do, lol. And I'm also a known helicopter (to a degree) at times, but only when it warrants it. But I know what it's like to have someone up in your business (Helicopter) when you're trying to figure out what all is going on, hanging over your shoulder asking all kinds of questions. I just tell them that my fees are 'double' if they watch. Triple if they ask questions! Eventually they get the hint, and leave me to my business. :-) This question is about what "Brand" of Run Capacitor is the best - for the money - in your opinion? I've used the Mars brand (like you used on this Condenser Unit, and they've lasted 1-2-yrs tops each time. Then I moved on to the B.M.I. Brand, which lasted about the same length of time as the Mars Brand. Then I switched over to the AmRad brand, which was about twice the price as the other two brands, but as per suggested by a fellow friend that's in the Heating & A/C business, but living in another State now. But I'd kinda got tired of having to replace them once every year, or two. And since replacing the Run Capacitor this last time with the AmRad Brand, it's been working perfectly for the past 5+ almost 6-yrs now with no problems what so ever. Did I answer my own question? :-/
Been doing hvac for 20+ yrs haven't had any tech like crawl spaces builders should make a mechanical room always trying to make closet space or whatever that goes for in addicts too as far as using used parts to get the customer up and going till you get the right part why not there's always a naysayer
Great job ted !!!!! Looks good from my house . I definitely 💯 % would have had no problems with you installing a used cap to get it up and . running . As long as it works is good enough for me !!!!! Some people are just so daum ridiculous. Great 👍 job as always!!!M!
There's a thermo-overload in that motor. Don't replace it until you have too. I would have had gasket material on the truck or at least some hi- temp silicone.
Only one thing I didn't understand. The bird was obviously wedged into the shell and you mentioned about it being jammed or really stuck, but,,,, why not simply turn the squirrel cage the other way so the bird would no longer be compressed in the shell???? This was my immediate thought!!
She is the type "If you want to do it right, then DIY". The reality is that she doesn't know these stuff. The worst kind that "doesn't even know what they don't know and consequently thought they knew".
That bird could have been a European Starling, which is non-native to N. America. It was purposely introduced back in the 1800's by someone that wanted to enjoy having a bird (only because it's mentioned somewhere in Shakespeare plays) with a presence in N. America. Same issue with the English Sparrow.
that's a tall crawlspace, compared to many I've been in! although some had thin concrete so a creeper worked, you couldn't get passed the drains or the main beams on them and had to GI crawl with toes and elbows. not beer guts in there!
I'm sure you seen those burnt low volt yellow wires that notoriously sit too close to that draft housing, that generation Goodman was almost as bad as the prior Janitrol line. I know, People will say has there ever been a good generation of Goodman/Janitrol/ I say when they went to the tube heat exchanger they improved.
i am afraid she has a bad case of batts in the bellfree
Love seeing you in here. Much love from one of your subs
Ya did good, Ted. Definitely go for a furnace replacement due to the age of it. Tell her to replace it on her terms, not the equipment's.
Great videos Steve. HVAC, Plumbing, and cooking with Miss Molly.
😂
Nothing better than steve
So in my opinion if a used capacitor is still good and you didn’t charge her for it I don’t see the big deal…you satisfied the customer.
Agreed
100%
As long as you don't misrepresent it as new, a working part now is almost always better than a marginally better part later. Also, better for the environment, not just throwing out perfectly functional components.
Us old timers understand something you young bloods don't.
That is a promise made is a promise kept. There used to be a day in this world when a mans word was his bond. It's not always about the cash.

The customer is obviously fine, and I'm sure she is glad you got her AC running when it was 95 out. Better than waiting a day with no AC. Being from the northeast, it's so weird to see exterior mounted breaker boxes... Though it does seem like kinda a security risk.
You had me laughing while crawling out of that space...I could just hear you thinking "...I'm getting too old for this kind of stuff..." =)
I would rather have a used capacitor and the unit running that to have to wait for a run to a supply house on a 95+° day.
Hater's gunna hate - I, for one, am extremely appreciative of what you do and how you do it (both in the trade and in presenting it to all of us on a regular basis)! Thank you!
Great job, I also saw in a Steve Lav video that he was finding birds in the ductwork! I love Miss Molly !
Being from Northern Illinois, these outside breaker panels never cease to amaze me..
I don’t understand how people could criticize great customer service.

yeah, but was he right about the diagram?
Why do people think that electricity is a spectator sport?
Always drives me nuts seeing hvac equipment installed like that where it's impossible to service or replace a blower motor or any other component. Installed problems.
You were SUPER patient with her at the time and getting her going with a perfectly good used part that you disclosed was used and didn't charge for... is perfectly reasonable and... look... it got her through the rest of summer without issue. So... no issue.
You took care of that lady like she was family. Don’t let the negative Neds bother you.

I've had AC Techs put in USED Caps on our Rentals. They charged FULL price too. I discovered this after the fact
You can use Hi temp silicone in place of gasket in a pinch.
We stayed at a cabin in Tennessee this past week and it had a fairly new carrier gas unit and the blower motor ran from the time we got there till the day we left (6days). Well said. I couldn't not agree more. Ted is first class all the way.

14:45 that's what she said.
Ted
I always kept a couple small tubes of heat caulk on my truck for when I get in jam.. very cheap but very effective
That's a chimney swift! It is very rewarding to watch you work Ted! Thanks and Merry Christmas!
Nice fix! You should consider wearing a respirator when working in that sort of environment.
At least a Dust mask
There's just nuthin' like petrified shredded tweet in the inducer fan.
I saw that video and you were completely amicable to the customer you did fine you have more patience than I do that's for sure
That heat exchanger is probably toast too
Do what you can and you're doing a good job you've been doing it for a while I love your videos
I appreciate the shots of the data plates. Thank you. Those shaded pole motors are great. If they hum, they will run.
Thank goodness for Goodman. I've probably taken dozens of birds and bats out of draft inducers, and the motors always started after. It probably did some damage to it. But on a 20 year old furnace is it worth replacing?
That inducer motor sounded pretty smooth. Can’t get a new gasket for it?
Like watching you and Steve. Good people.
We see birds in chimneys often. Took a 5 gal/ bucket of them out of one once. They set on the chimney to get warm then pass out from carbon monoxide and fall in. Just another day in HVAC!
Finding a well established colony of hornets jamming up the draft inducer is about the least fun one can have in a craw space furnace job site

Chickens are like that too. We had one that jumped through a 36 inch belt drive fan years ago that fan was never right after that.

Im a tech up north in Rhode Island. Found a bat in an inducer bout a week back. Love your videos man 🤘🏻

Up here in Canada that furnace would have been condemned just because of that flue pipe is a fire hazard even if it was installed in 2002. Still has to be up to ode when we go to a call or the gas gets shut off.
Typical crawl space here in CA is 18"-20". The furnace is in a closet or the attic space.
All furnace belong in closets
Excellent REAL WORLD situational service Ted!! I say well done!
The shit you run into man lmfao , your reaction plus your accent makes it 10x funnier than it really is.
Ted you did Good on both counts and state the facts keep your word and are a Country Gentleman. With Good Coustomer Service. MERRY Christmas.

Reminds me of an old Skynyrd song '' Free Bird ''🤣🤣🤣👏👍✌Thx for sharing
Why can you not vent into a chimney? Is the idea that you can't trust a masonry chimney to be airtight so combustion gases could enter the house?
If she wants a second visit she should pay.
I don’t know the answer about helicopters but for for many folks it’s a lot of money. They for the most part aren’t qualified to question you, but they are needy and need to soothed. It’s a people business at some level. Love your channel

That bird was alive? I swear I didn’t hear it chirp, if he was alive he wasn’t long for this world.
Went under one of the historical houses in my area, and to turn over on your back you had to get your hip between to floor joist that was a tight one.
In reference to the used part, I just had a new inducer and dual pressure switches installed on my 16-year-old furnace. I intend to get a new furnace come the Spring. Just as this lady did, you got the use of them when you needed it.
I’m just eating dinner watching you peel apart this bird 😂
😊 you can't make everybody happy you just do what you can
17:15 - Is it possible that the flue gases will seep around that compromised gasket or rather no danger of CO in the space?
Ted I'd be lying if I said I didn't put a used run cap on a unit to get them going in the summer we are not cap r us we do run out or maybe it's a strange size but let me tell you something that used cap probably out last half of the new one crap I've had many caps new fail litterly the next day weeks months lmao so great job as always
No KFC for Ted for dinner tonight!
hey what coil cleaner did you use....
Your videos are my favorite ones to watch.
a lady called me and stated her washing machine was possessed...i thought she was drinking to much...however while i stood there and told her there was nothing wrong with her new whirlpool washer ..it fired up and started to dry agitate. i remove the back cover and there was a dried up mouse with his teeth sunk up in the wiring harness.. i guess when it got humid enough it carried voltage and started the washer up..you just never know what your gonna run into out there
It’s pretty hard to rip someone off when you don’t charge them. Crazy people.
This question is about what "Brand" of Run Capacitor is the best - for the money - in your opinion? :-/
pretty much any of them made in the US are good the titan pro’s are probably the best cheaper option
If new cap lasts you a year - you should look for additional problem. Something takes it out. I have Jards/mars/tradepro caps running for 5+years
I think your over thinking this whole subject
You kill me with the shock the monkey game at 5:07.
We don't have breaker panels outside here in PA
Been doing hvac for 20+ yrs haven't had any tech like crawl spaces builders should make a mechanical room always trying to make closet space or whatever that goes for in addicts too as far as using used parts to get the customer up and going till you get the right part why not there's always a naysayer
I remember the other video she literally followed you back and forth through the yard asking silly questions 🤣
she asked if the capacitor was the "freon" lmao
Thanks for the great content Cowboy 👍🏼, Greetings from MoTown.
the worst helicopter is the one that is watching and asking questions so he can try do it himself and just pay service fee.
Great job ted !!!!! Looks good from my house . I definitely 💯 % would have had no problems with you installing a used cap to get it up and . running . As long as it works is good enough for me !!!!! Some people are just so daum ridiculous. Great 👍 job as always!!!M!
From the camera angle it looked like there was some more of the bird in the exhaust pipe, where the inducer hooks up to it.
Down here we have anoles, armadillos, bats, and alligators! We find them everywhere!
There's a thermo-overload in that motor. Don't replace it until you have too. I would have had gasket material on the truck or at least some hi- temp silicone.
how are you going to get the blower motor out when it needs to be replaced
Honey, will u take lunch with you?
Naaa. I have fried bird for a lunch.
You have not seen a helicopter until you meet my mom lol.
Should have bagged it and brought it to her like a proud cat 😂😂😂
That bird could have been a European Starling, which is non-native to N. America. It was purposely introduced back in the 1800's by someone that wanted to enjoy having a bird (only because it's mentioned somewhere in Shakespeare plays) with a presence in N. America. Same issue with the English Sparrow.
Whoever installed that furnace doesn't need to be installing them anymore!
You can't stop a Goodman! I'm with you on the crawl spaces, that one sucked. Another Dr. Seuss install.
Hello from the great state of Michigan
Hello from the greater state of Ohio
@@Austin23191 hello from the GREATEST state California
Steve Lav found 2 Black Birds in The Flue Pipe of a Furnace a while back.
Nothing can't stop a Goodman... unless it is a bird.
that's a tall crawlspace, compared to many I've been in! although some had thin concrete so a creeper worked, you couldn't get passed the drains or the main beams on them and had to GI crawl with toes and elbows. not beer guts in there!
Crawlspace work would tend to cut down on the Helicopter Factor.
They Should Do Furnaces/Air handlers like they do here in Oklahoma they either go in the Garage or in a closet in the House
I agree with you about the height and crawldoors
Used part, no charge? What an awesome fella!
Ted "The Bird Man" Cook 😎👍
Yeah, but he'll take real birds over drones!
