The fact Thomas Jane is still in Detective Miller costume - both during this aftershow episode and in the on-set behind-the-scenes photos from S05E03 - makes me wonder: Was Thomas Jane just wearing his normal everyday clothes when playing Miller, or did Jane just like the costume so much that he decided to adopt it?
It is really reassuring to know how much the people behind The Expanse are proud of the work, love doing the show. They are fans, too. Wes&Ty have made a great after hours show that helps watchers understand what is involved, how the dynamics of making a fine production work between the parties. Why scenes get better with editing. So the after hours show is so far about not just about the Expanse, but the craft of the parties involved. As for the episode, again you see Cara Gee make the most of the minutes she has. She's made Drummer my favorite character on the Expanse next to Wes Chatham's Amos. Not that the other characters and the people playing them are not worthy of praise. They all are. No you got it wrong the best books and shows make you feel the loss by making you remember and miss them. Lose is a part of every great story. Lord of the Rings, The Expanse, Pandoras Star.
My favorite scene was all of a sudden there are hundreds of Mackerel leaping out of the water and the fisherman is like "wow great" and then "oh boy..."
Wes Chatham plays Amos so well! Watching him here being so talkative and smiling so much, contrasting with Amos who is a more stoic and edgy character is amazing!
Love Thomas Jane.I hadn’t realized he directed this episode. Congratulations. It was truly amazing. Love all the stories. I could listen to them all day. Thank you.
That's funny because when I was watching episode 3 of this season I was literally thinking to myself as they went through the credits how much I missed Thomas Jane, and then his name popped up his director.
@@MrBobzane He definitely brought an unpredictable vibe compared to the rest of the crew. I feel like you already know what everyone else will do before they do it. Holden will always do the heroic thing. Naomi will always suggest the pragmatic and pro-OPA thing to do. Amos is a savage. Alex is the moody cowboy who just sort of goes along for the ride. Miller straight up just shot a dude in the middle of his speech about saving humanity lol.
I'll never be able to enjoy another Sci-Fi series once The Expand concludes, the bar has been set too high. Also, I love Alien and I'm so glad to hear that this movie was such a big influence.
The part when Filip comes to Naomi and just keeps on walking.. it was just so natural. Thomas Jane what a brilliant sense of emotions he had, and how to visually communicate it. It just blew my mind. Great Stuff 🤩🤩 The Expanse.
Thomas Jane looks like he has to be constantly moving. He was cool on the show and I can only imagine he would be a blast to speak to, as long as you are on the same wave length as him.
This is a really good series (after show). Looking forwards to the rest of these conversations. I hope you have Cara Gee on one of these. I’d love to hear her take on Drummer.
Loved Thomas Jane before but hearing him talk as a creative and his vision for story telling made me respect him even more. That discussion about Filip scoping Naomi out and the writer saying how great that was and admitting it wasn't on the page shows the magic a director can bring and you can tell how appreciative he was hearing that.
When he put on the hat he's Jane/Miller/proto molecule. They do great team work. I loved season one for his futuristic Philip Marlow performance. Was the "where's my hat?" his friend asked him when he went to ceres a wink to star wars lando and han talking about the millennium falcon?.
I love Amos. His story in Baltimore has made me cry alot. So good. Thanks for doing this. I missed seeing Miller all the time in the show. The first two seasons were intense and grabbed my interest. His quest for Julie was beautiful ❤️
this was really a great episode. thomas is a great interviewee and is very engaging. i hope there are plans to interview him again, hopefully about another episode of the expanse.
Thomas smoking a bowel is the most important thing I have seen. I know understand his role for season one and two. His direction was amazing for this episode. So proud of amazon
I'm glad TJ described the Filip/Naomi scene. It was the part that made my heart crack and bleed. It was the first time Naomi actually seemed weak (which is NOT a word I would ever use to describe Naomi), having to stand there and let her son rip her to shreds. One of the few scenes in this show that brought me to tears. (the other two scenes belong to Amos&Holden in previous seasons)

As for Alien itself it's amazing how so much fear is built by the absence of sound and light rather than relying on special effects. The big parts are parceled(sp?) out here and there like the ship is a horror house which for the characters is a home in many ways and you identify with them so fiercely almost immediately. You want to scream at everyone ignoring Ripley (Weaver). The closeness and smallness of the spaceship vs the vastness of the planet and the alien ship and the way the different types of shots convey those differences. I could be here all day...
I absolutely adore Thomas Jane. He is the most underrated actor of his generation. I’ve never seen anything with him that sucked. Would love to have a beer with him and talk film
Having been an old guy and employee for many companies, corporations, studios even, it is so great to hear of the workings of a "well oiled machine", where individuals can make creative input into the artistic work, respected and integrated into the greater work, the tough decisions made by a coordinator, a huge respect for the story and details, people all working together successfully with good will and collaboration. Some things regular American industry has lost in the age of the rust belt and MBA's screwing people for pennies here and millions there. Dodging regulations, cutting paychecks. while feathering nests. Screwing underlings, meanness and prejudice. Good old American creativity and smart, hard work in an artistic and highly technical field is SO good to see. If they choose to light up a pipe, if it is better for the production, great. The important thing is the work, and a sense of humor and a good creative imagination helps SO much.
It's funny that when it comes down to it all, these actors are just huge nerds who love stories so much they want to be in them. It's great hearing them open up about their passion.
Before Season 6 starts I’d like to see a few RUclips drops that recap seasons 1-5 just so everyone can have a cohesive view of things as well as to get spun up for Season 6
As a crime thriller author, I really love these discussions of story and character arcs. The Expanse is a fantastic series with a wonderfully diverse cast.
I've never seen a show, especially in science fiction, where the cast are such dedicated fans who understand and love the show as The Expanse. I'm looking at you, Patrick Stewart.
Was so excited when I saw Thomas Jane Credited with the director title in s5.. He's such a character, some of my favorite movie moments are with Thomas jane on the screen, Hope that the future will be with him behind the camera!
Well now I'm as addicted to the Aftershow as I am the Show. What have you guys done to me. Then to hear Thomas Jane actually say the same thing about The Expanse that I did in an earlier comment just fuels the addiction.
Really love these, seeing the people who are part of this great series as themselves, giving insight into the process and themselves. Wes Chatman is a great interviewer too!
Man... now I understand why my butt cheeks were so tight from watching this show. Thomas Janes , Hitchcock way of building the tension was amazing. Now I will be more aware of the characters actions as well as the story. Had to watch it twice because I was too caught up in the visual. This is going to be an amazing season.
Great show about a fantastic episode! Giving such an important episode to Thomas Jane to direct really shows the respect felt for him by everyone involved in The Expanse. Hearing him describe his process was wonderful. He is an actor first and brings that to his direction. This is a natural progression for him. He sees the bigger picture so well and can interpret this for the actors while also pulling from each actor what they want to bring to the scene and making sure that is included as well. Wonderful interview Ty and That Guy!
Wes, I love how passionate you are about The Expanse (from a fan's perspective), as well as TV and movies in general. It really comes across in these podcasts. And it's especially fun since you play my favourite character on The Expanse!
i thank the creators of this show so much!!! there’s so much cgi to do and the actors are just amazing so much work out into this. i wish you guys would make more seasons but i know you’re not going to since people don’t watch it. if i was pewdiepie i would force my subscribers to all go watch the show heck if i was president free amazon prime for everyone to watch it you guys are amazing
Thomas Jane is the only reason I can use to get some people to watch this show. I hope he comes back again as Miller, because it's the first thing people ask me when talking about how good the show is.
Man, can this just be a thing? Ty Franck and Wes Chatham talking about The Expanse? Like not just an episode by episode thing but hell, dive into the books, Wes seems to know them well and Ty... well... Yeah. It's an interesting perspective on the story and it would just be great to see more where things came from and how it all came together. As a watcher or a reader we only ever get the end product. I want to know the routes, the justifications, the ideas that led to different things. I mean, this is probably just a promotional thing done for a new season of a show that was never exactly the most popular thing on TV, but man, a guy can dream can't he?
It's a podcast, so no doubt they'll cover S5 to start with as it's the inception, then hopefully they'll do recaps of the four previous seasons after this, and start on the books in between future seasons (if it goes past S6).
This was a great interview. I love Thomas Jane's humility. When he describes his decisions regarding the scene where Naomi meets her son, he could have throw the writers under the bus for failing to flesh out the scene, but he didn't at all. Just pointed out that the way it was written was entirely legitimate and that the dialogue was the important part, while explaining his directorial decisions. The Expanse is a special show. The whole team behind it seems to love what they're doing.
I appreciate what Thomas Jane has brought to the table. Reminiscent of old Star Trek or Babylon 5, just slow it down every now and then and let it simmer for a bit.
It's beautiful to see people who are so professional and so in love with what they do. This is the deep dive I didn't know I needed, but I love it so much! Very inspiring and educational. I put on hold binge-watching The Expanse from 101 for the third (or fourth) time for this. Wes is a good host and a cool guy!
Josephus Miller is one of the best tv characters of all time and I’m so glad that the man who skillfully portrayed him continued to have a role in the show he was such an integral part of. Thomas Jane, What a man.
This couldn't be more perfect! These two amazing actors that are my favorite from the show and how everyone talking about how much the Film Alien inspired them... Alien is one of my all time favorite films.
I've never seen a show more worthy of the exploration that Ty and that guy are giving us. I drink in every word and concept. Re-reading the books, and realizing how true to the vision the series has been, even with major role shifts, is in and of itself mind blowing, but to get it right, episode after episode. Kudos, hats off, bravo. Thank you thank you. This is not just entertainment, it also serves us educationally.
The episode was tight! I loved it. It was like watching a movie. Avasarala is awesome. This season has been absolutely awesome. Makes up for last season which was just ok after the greatness of season 1,2 and 3.
I'm here for the Avaserala and Delgado buddy cop show. Dr Alaoui himself must have figured out the stealth tech angle by now? Did Marco's people stash Ashford's device in that fire extinguisher thingy? Didn't that float out into space with Ashford last season? Didn't really understand how Drummer knew how to find it and how it got where it was. So much fun to see Thomas Jane again. It was a fun episode and what a cliffhanger
When Drummer looks back at the first one she knows something is off with the second one since the first one is where it should be. You don't need an extinguisher in the airlock since you can just space the fire, and the first one is where it should be so it's not a mistake for the second one in the airlock.
Makes sense as a stash point for a few reasons. Maybe in the event of a mutiny he can disable/lock the airlock before he gets spaced, hold out in there for a while with the nutrition bars, and fight back with the gun when the oportunity arises. Unfortunately he was on a different ship in this instance.
The stash in the fire extinguisher was in the airlock on Ashford's ship, the Tynan. Ashford was spaced on Marco's ship. What he used to record the message was his wrist terminal, which is presumably just another form of the PDA/smartphone style terminals. At the end of that scene in S4, you literally see his wrist terminal display "Message Sent", so we can only presume that he was sending it either to his ship, or directly to the device in the stash, which is presumably the backup data core they were initially searching for but couldn't find. It makes sense that a notorious, ex-pirate like Ashford would be canny and paranoid enough that his backup data core is essentially just a hidden WiFi storage device with some kind of Wake-on-LAN type deal to allow it to be completely disconnected from the ships systems and hidden well away from prying eyes (probably even his own crew!)
It's so interesting to learn more about how what's on the screen takes shape and how the writers, actors, show runner, director, and editor all bring something unique and creative to the table. These aftershows are great!
Wowza. I didn’t- HOW didn’t I know you two did this YT series???? My bestie and her husband are retired Coastie/Army vets, and were the first to recommend The Expanse. My teenage son and I became addicted to it. We refuse to watch the Final episode because then it will be *over*. We are reading the books, rewatching the series, and have dissected plot points, the science, the politics, and how brilliant the casting choices are. It’s been a godsend, honestly, over the last three years. I so appreciate this YT series- can’t wait to dive in. Ps: we adore all the cast. The decisions have been Perfection!!! But our top 5 faves really are: Avasarala, Miller, Drummer, Amos, Draper, and special recognition to PRAX! (Holden and Naomi & Alex are all that and a bag of chips, but we *do* play favorites. Sorry!)
I kind of felt that the new season mirrors the first in a way. Three episodes of world-building and build-up before the "wow" hits in ep 4. Didn't pick up on Avasarala as the detective though.
shout out to Cara Gee. What a great performance in that episode.

Detective Miller went out too early from this storyline, yet he left an everlasting impact. Salute. Amos as usual, is a gift that keeps on giving.

i thank the creators of this show so much!!! there’s so much cgi to do and the actors are just amazing so much work out into this. i wish you guys would make more seasons but i know you’re not going to since people don’t watch it. if i was pewdiepie i would force my subscribers to all go watch the show heck if i was president free amazon prime for everyone to watch it you guys are amazing
The genuinely believe in the WORK. What a concept. So good to see today.
It's a podcast, so no doubt they'll cover S5 to start with as it's the inception, then hopefully they'll do recaps of the four previous seasons after this, and start on the books in between future seasons (if it goes past S6).
@@danallard1966 Well it looks like that is exactly what they are doing. Awesome.
The whole team behind it seems to love what they're doing.
feeling that Alien love, that movie blew so many minds
I still remember the first TV reference to it on a cheesy Kids SpaceDude" show out of california. Early 1979 ( I was a High School Junior)
_Right._
Great watching this! Thanks Ty and "that guy." And Thomas freakin' Jane discussing Alien. So cool.
I appreciate what Thomas Jane has brought to the table. Reminiscent of old Star Trek or Babylon 5, just slow it down every now and then and let it simmer for a bit.
The expanse is great please reconsider your decision on stopping at season 6 and continue with the whole book series
It makes me happy to not have to have it be confirmed but just know that all three have read The Dark Tower... just so happy.
I hope Marvel gives Thomas a chance to direct Jon Bernthal in The Punisher. Match made in heaven.
Josephus Miller is one of the best tv characters of all time and I’m so glad that the man who skillfully portrayed him continued to have a role in the show he was such an integral part of. Thomas Jane, What a man.
The Expanse made me really enjoy Thomas Jane again. Seeing him smoke a pipe makes him my new hero
Thomas Jane... we need to see more directing from this man!
I wish I could sit there during weekend rehearsal meetings.
Wow, Timmy is really well spoken.
How long before HE becomes a director I wonder.
@@garywheeler7039 He is a director and has his own studio, they speak about it in the begining...
@@Pyreing he's not talking about Thomas Jane. Timmy = Amos = Wes.
I'm assuming the device she found was the receiver of the message.
Wow, this was a great interview please keep them coming, thank you Wes & Ty.
It's so interesting to learn more about how what's on the screen takes shape and how the writers, actors, show runner, director, and editor all bring something unique and creative to the table. These aftershows are great!
Detective Miller one of my favorites characters hheeeheh where is the hat sir?
I'm loving these! Thank you and can't wait until S5E4 ❤️❤️
All those messages were like "Hey Tommy! Will you direct my new film / episode?!"
Sorry!)
episode 3 was amazing! keep up the good work and thank you for keeping us all sane during lockdown
I kind of felt that the new season mirrors the first in a way. Three episodes of world-building and build-up before the "wow" hits in ep 4. Didn't pick up on Avasarala as the detective though.
Expanse, great show.
This pod, great show.
Keep it up guys.
