The set of fountains in Piața Unirii in Bucharest, Romania is managed by Apa Nova, the concessionaire for the provision of water supply and sewage services for the municipality. They were built during the communist regime following the systematization plans of Nicolae Ceaușescu, when Unirii Boulevard (at that time, Victoria Socialismu) was also laid out. Degraded a lot until the 2010s, they were rehabilitated in 2018-2019 by the German company Oase GmbH.
Unirii Boulevard is one of the most important boulevards in Bucharest and one of the busiest roads in the city. The large boulevard represents the longitudinal axis of the new Civic Center project, started after the 1977 Earthquake, under the pretext of rebuilding and repairing the damage caused by the earthquake in Bucharest. Starting from the idea of repairing the damage caused by the earthquake, the project of the new Civic Center was used by the Nicolae Ceaușescu regime to dissipate the influences that the old, historic center of Bucharest exerted on the city environment.
Representing a socialist equivalent of the Champs-Élysées avenue, Victoria Socialismului boulevard is part of the suite of megalomaniac works that mark the last decade of Nicolae Ceaușescu's repressive regime. One of the dictator's great wishes was for the boulevard to exceed the size of the Parisian thoroughfare. The construction of the 2.8 km long artery required remarkable financial and material efforts, using a quarter of the construction materials from Bucharest, in the context of the parallel construction of other large-scale objectives, such as the Palace of Parliament, the National Library and the Radio House.
