  • An anonymous French trouvère song from the 14th century manuscript Le Chansonnier de l'Arsenal MS 5198 (found in 3 other manuscripts as well). It's a song of unrequited love.
"Often my heart full of grief sighs for the most beautiful one in the empire. She torments me so much that I dare not describe it. She knows well how to refuse me and to despise me more than all others...When I look at her she kills me and sets me on fire.
...I must draw grief onto myself since I cannot please her. I must make myself leave her presence."
I've tried different ornaments and drones on the repeated verses.
Performed by Daniel Shoskes on a 5 course medieval gittern.
