  • It's (mostly) everything I wrote for my bachelor's degree in writing: the good, the bad, the awful, the atrocious, and the practically unspeakable. And if this video seems obnoxiously long for such a self-indulgent topic, so were the 4.5 years I spent in academia.

    that was alot. i wish more writing students did these kinds of videos, you can really see where real life affects your writing process, sometimes in bad ways during times of social hardship i guess you can say. i relate to that with my art, so its interesting to see it with someone doing an actual degree from uni. im glad you got published, thats really cool for someone who was still in school at the time.
    im wondering if your still into screenplays, especially after that teacher who gave you 96. imagine a tv show written by you, would have folklore and maybe camping? idk

      I'm not really into screen to be honest. I find it really fun to write, but I'm much more into fiction and I haven't had much desire to write screen since I graduated. But if I ever feel inclined to try it again, I'd be certainly open to it!

I love you and your content! They clearly have issues and that's no reflection of you at ALL. Plus, you've come so far with your writing and videos and no one can take that from you. They can try to distract from that but we won't let them let us forget that your growth is worth focusing on above anything else. You are beyond worthy of all the views and subscribers. • @janine9115
    @janine9115 4 года назад +7

    Thanks for this. It was interesting to hear about your experiences. I did a postgraduate writing course and tbh, I've learnt more about technique from RUclips videos.
    The major takeaway from my writing degree was a loss of confidence. My instructors had a very set idea of what constitutes good writing - which was literary style writing about middle class problems eg. Jonathon Franzen.
    It's taken years to regain my confidence and trust my own voice. One of the things I've since learnt is that there are 2 styles of writing - the literary style which draws attention to language through the beauty of the prose, and writing which seeks to make itself invisible so the focus is on the story.
    I fall into the latter group and while I enjoyed my writing degree to an extent, it didn't help me develop much as a writer.

    I'm in an intro to creative writing class right now and just turned in my first piece. It was creative nonfiction, and I feel like I have the opposite problem where I took too much of risk and got way too personal..... my professor sent me an audio recording of her feedback yesterday and I still haven't been able to listen to it!!!

    I'm in my third year of college at a small, American university. My major is called English with an emphasis in creative writing and I've taken 3 (and will ever take 3 creative writing classes). The program has a lot of students but it's severly understaffed. I took an intro to creative writing course my 1st year, a fiction writing course my 2nd year, and a screenwriting course this year. I've turned in 5 short stories, couple of poems, and a short film script in that time. Ever since then, I've pretty much had literary analysis essays. My school is the type of school where you can turn in a 1st draft (I was usually the only person who turned in clean, 3rd or 4th drafts) because so many non english major took the class for a writing credit. No one was expected to have beats (still have never learned about beats in any of my courses) and developed characters. Most of the time, people would show up without even a draft to workshop. I wish the program was better but my school is known for science so that's where the focus and funding goes. I'm also a dual science major (public health and bio minor) so even if I didn't learn much from my english degree, it's still worth it for me to attend this school.

    Shaelin, I am excited to read your novel, Honey Vinegar when it is published. I am trying to overcome writer’s block. I recently wrote the poems, Changes, Into Reality, The Colors Blend, and The Ignited Passion. I am currently working on a short story. I endeavor to finish my novel soon. I submitted my short story, Ambition and Rejection the Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards in December. I just received a notification that I won a writing award at regional level. I won the Gold Key award, which is awarded to the very best literary works. I entered my first writing contest in fourth grade. I am now in eighth grade. I am now a recognized author. Award recipients considered for national recognition will be announced in March. I want to study English Literature and Creative Writing in college. I will definitely read your short fiction pieces that have been published. I love you

    Short screenplays are a nightmare to write anything shorter than 30 pages is very hard to structure. Hour television 50 to 60 pages is easier for a lot of people. Features were scary for me when I was in college, decades ago. In college I had very few ideas. I now have a file of 118 ideas. I taught screen writing. I would often tell the students to read the novel The Cider House Rules, then watch the film and if you can read the screenplay. Then take a short story you have written adapt it to a screenplay. Never judge yourself too hard and never let poor grades or constant rejection change what you think about your project. Never be afraid to fail it will always happen, always. Pick yourself up dust yourself off, fail again and fail again. Your words and your passion will be your power.

    I definitely relate to the nostalgia feeling. I finished my poetry collection that's been a work in progress for two years now. Technically it was complete and completely revised several months ago, but I still had it in my power to change it and whatnot, which I did all the time because I refused to call it finished. I would post some of the poetry and updates about the collection on Instagram, and it came across a small publishing company who took interest and are working with me now to publish the book.
    I'm sure you feel this way with your degree, too, where you have this huge and exciting accomplishment but now it's over, and you have to figure out what to do with yourself because yesterday working on this was your whole life and now you have to say goodbye to it and move on and start the next phase. It's amazing but also really sad at the same time.
