The darkest moment about this short, is the kittens inside that bag scene. The reason why the bag and the kittens were wet, that's because they were drowned
That the thing I came realize about MGM's cartoons. You can have all the cartoon violence and slapstick, but there were moments of quietness, heart, and devastation stuck in there as well.
@@allisonwhatthe4862 There's a later Tom and Jerry short called "Puppy Tale" from 1954 which starts out with a bag tossed into a river on a dark night. There are 6 puppies inside of it. Thankfully, Jerry rescues them all.
The darkest part of this short for me aside from Spike as the devil has got to be the fate of Fluff Muff and Puff, three adorably innocent little kittens who were drowned in a sack. The imagery of Tom going up the very long escalator to heaven is gorgeous. The very last part of the cartoon before the reveal that it was all just a dream, where it looks like Tom might have just made it only for the escalator to fade away and Tom ends up plummeting into Devil Spike's cauldron is absolutely chilling. Sylvester would later have a short called "Satan's Waiting" in 1954 where he too dies while chasing after Tweety. Unfortunately, there's not chance for him to get into heaven, and it's not just a dream...
Funny thing about all three of those shorts. (Heavenly Puss, Satan’s Waiting and Pluto’s Judgement Day) is that they all had a gag involving a cat getting run over by a steamroller.
The shrug is same as the end of Jerry's Diary, it means no reason and not to do something, especially received an unfair treatment for doing some behavior wrong.
I thought this short had a perfect balance dark morbid scenes and wholesome moments. It reminded me of It’s a Wonderful Life. Although the joke about the Three drowned Kittens was one of the darkest moments in all of Tom and Jerry history.
The funny thing is we never understood when these legendary episodes were made when we were kids. Even I was surprised after knowing that these episodes were made in 1940-1950😯 Anyway, it's another memory lane from my childhood☺️❤️
This was one of the most terrifying cartoons I've ever seen! Watching the cats with various injuries was bad enough. But that hellhound sealed it for me!
Definitely, you can also understand Jerry's skepticalism as well due to the many times Tom screws him over, especially when Tom goes back and forth with his attitude towards, but you still side with him because you do not want him to go to hell.
a Bunch of the later cartoons from MGM were poorly done in color originally using companies own process unlike the WB Cartoons made in the 1940's that paid for the use of Technicolor.
lol its the T&J that traumatized a generation. Although, it has a theme, a story, a redemption arc. Its good. But the episode where the two try to commit suicide just cause they lost the girl, is dark.
Ah Yes The Most Darkest Tom And Jerry Short Ever Made (Behind Blue Cat Blues From 1956, The Chuck Jones Short, The Year Of Mouse And The Two Mouseketeer’s From 1952) (But that’s for its ending which along with this short have been banned in Brazil)
Ever see the Chuck Jones short “The Year of the Mouse”? Tom’s just trying to sleep while Jerry and another mouse keep gaslighting him into thinking that he’s suicidal.
To this day, this remains the darkest Tom and Jerry cartoon known to man. If the terrifying laughter of that devil dog didn't shock you, Fluff Muff and Puff certainly did.
This film has a similar plot to the 1948 Three Stooges short, Heavenly Daze. In it Shemp dies, and in order to spend eternity in heaven, he is told by Uncle Mortimer (Moe Howard) to go back to Earth 🌎 and reform Moe and Larry.
This is one of my favorite classic Tom and Jerry shorts. It start out like any other, but then goes in a very different and surprising direction, especially since it plays straight what would really happen in 70% of the painful accidents inflicted on Tom and plays it through to the end. Tom would end up dead and having to address the afterlife morality fact that he torments a mouse more for fun and not for sustenance as a proper cat would.
Same! That, along with Spike as the devil is the most darkest scene throughout short. But I never understood what The Nostalgia Critic meant when he said stuff like this seems cliche.

Shame on humans, really shame on me if I am the same kind as these cruel people, shame on me, shame. 💔💔💘💘

Perfect episode before Christmas
A very Dickens-esque episode of Tom and Jerry. Very appropriate for the season.

Back when the shorts actually had meaning. And weren't pulling any punches.
I love how confused Jerry is at the end of this.
The First time he went to heaven was “Mouse Trouble”
"Come up,come up,come up and see me sometime!"😅😅😅
And also the few times where Tom non-canonically dies in the franchise.
