In the second half of episode five, Miller comes face to face with Julie Mao and the two of them work together to save Earth. Enjoy my emotional breakdown everyone!

This was the ending of book 1. It is, in my opinion, one of the finest hours of sci-fi television ever produced. And your reaction was fantastic, thank you Molly :)
Here, here. I can't, off the top of my head recall a scifi TV show episode that hit me like this.
@@keithnphx63 emotionally I agree it definitely was the most heartbreaking and beautifully written episode.
Everything you wrote is 100% correct.
@@keithnphx63 does futurama - jurassic bark count?
@@solgnaleb Oh I'm afraid I've not seen a lot of Futurama. I've only dipped in and out from time to time.
This episode was an incredible culmination of Miller's redemptive arc. Miller hates being born a belter, the poorest and most despised people in the solar system. He cynically becomes a cop because it gives him the most power and financial rewards (bribes) even though he is subjugating his own people for the benefit of an earth corporation. He tries to hide from his belter roots by wearing earther clothes and using an earther dialect. When he initially got the Julie Mao case he couldn't understand why a privileged, wealthy heiress would turn leave that all behind to fight and ultimately die for oppressed people she barely knew. He tells Diogo "You don't choose anything, you're born into it. One side or the other. You just play it out." Then he sees the apparition of Julie that and realizes that what he said wasn't true. Your fate is not always preordained.
Dawes said that Miller was in love with Julie Mao but I don't think that was actually true. Miller never said that he loved her. He told Semi "I BELIEVE in her." not "I love her." Even when Miller finally meets Julie he says "I came an awful long way to find you. Because I believe in you. Can you believe that a guy like me can believe in something?" He believed in her choice of forgoing a life of privilege and wealth to work for justice for the oppressed people that was the source of her family's wealth. Julie's self-sacrifice was the slap in the face Miller needed to find way out of his self-pitying cynicism to become the man he always should have been - someone that fights for the greater good and not himself.
I was never understood why the bird always appeared whenever Miller was at a low point in his pursuit of Julie. In this episode there was a protomolecule bird leading him to Julie. None of these scenes with the bird was in the book except for the one of Miller throwing a soybean to the sparrow to demonstrate the low gravity on Ceres. I couldn’t figure what it represented until I rewatched season 1. At the end of the second episode Miller is browsing through Julie’s Tinder account. Her Tinder profile name is “Delightingale”. Then it all clicked for me. It’s a reference to the John Keats poem “Ode to a Nightingale." Julie is the Nightingale leading Miller out of the depths of his cynicism and despair to redemption.
Wow. I never would have made that connection. Great observation!
Wow, thanks for the nightingale explanation. I didn't recognize that clue. I thought it was just chosen as a symbol of something which is leading Miller towards hope, with no connection to the character at all.
Wow, excellent connection with the nightingale. Thank you. It's amazing on how many "easter eggs" this show contains and makes rewatching so rewarding. The attention to detail is incredible.
@@billross7245 I agree that the books and the show contain dozens of easter eggs. The first one I caught was the ship named Scopuli. In Greek mythology it's the name of the island where the Sirens sing to passing ships to lure sailors to their death trying to reach them. In the same way the distress beacon on the Scopuli was set to lure the Canterbury to it's death.
Ooh, that's a great detail I didn't know before. Brilliant, thank you :)
It’s ok everyone felt that way the first time we saw that episode. Speechless.
I read the books before i saw the show, and they are written very cinematically. Probably why they translate to TV so well. And i wasn't speechless at all. I was more like "yes!!! They did it the way it's supposed to be!" and i was celebrating the great transfer from the books to TV...
So no, not everyone was speechless the first time they saw the episode, i was already waiting for it at the end of season 1. ;D
No matter how many times I see this episode it still gets me. It's such a brilliant and heartbreaking culmination of Miller's journey as a character and his story arc and it's so beautifully done. The dream-like interior of Eros. The bird. Julie transformed into a tragic goddess. The kiss. The soundtrack. And at the end, the collision of Eros with Venus which is by far the most breathtaking visual effect I've ever seen on a television show. One of the best hours of television I've ever had the privilege of watching. It puts every other science fiction series to shame.
Your last sentence says it all. Absolute masterpiece
The scene with Avasarala and her husband got me.
Knowing the person you built your whole life with will be gone. And still having to be strong.
Right? Their faces said so much more to each other than just their words. The actors conveyed a couples love in that scene.
*Must. Not. Spoil*
@@Horesmi are you talking about NG/BA? Or worse yet, TW? If so, definitely do not
Yeah, Thomas Jane, is such an under-appreciated actor. He did the work with, Miller, so well.
Thomas Jane isn't under-appreciated at all. Not by us.
Fun fact: Miller and Julie has the same initials: Josephus Aloisus Miller & Juliette Andromeda Mao
JAM (squared)
Space Jam, hm?
Well, they were definitely jamming.
Didnt know that
I was a blubbering mess after this episode, the first time around. The next 10 times around ..... I was also a blubbering mess.
The greatest show on TV right now, and tbh, probably ever.
One thing that I didn't notice until later rewatches is the look that Miller gives to his nuke, he is trying to decide if he should let it explode and kill him and Julie, or if he should believe in Julie and trust that she will stop all of this
your reaction mirrors almost everyone who has a soul, this series is so good.
This reaction was every bit as good as I hoped it'd be :P
^^^
love this reaction...truly heartfelt
Man that's a tough watch. Miller :'(
Fun non spoilery observations about the episode!
Title: Home. In season 1, Anderson Dawes tells Miller that once he's lost everything, he'll find his way home, and "it" will welcome him. Miller also tells Naomi that in his visions of Julie, she tells him that he belongs with her. She says that to Miller in this scene. Also, waaaay back in episode 1 of season 1 Miller summarizes his task to find Julie as a "kidnap job" and once again she uses that exact phrase this episode.
Some behind the scenes info: The kiss wasnt scripted, the actors decided it fit the energy of the scene.
I have seen this scene at least 10 times now and I always tear up. It's just perfect.
Great Episode!
Quietly one of the most beautiful love stories I've ever watched. 2 people who never met drawn to reach other thru space and time... And death.
Miller never stopped trying to get back to her. Volunteering for his first spacewalk, taking the bomb from Diogo, willingly walking into contaminated Eros.
Proto-Julie could've been really cheesy but they totally nailed it! It was an lovely scene.
'You belong with me'
Miller told Naomi he could see Julie saying that to him.
Molly, don't worry about the commentary - the reaction was in your eyes and it was amazing.
Something to think about (no spoiler): Why was the bird there to guide Miller? He hadn't been assimilated yet. Julie had never met him, she couldn't have known it's significance to him. And why did she think he belonged with her? Some people speculate that the protomolecule exists outside time. So because Miller eventually united with Julie in it, they were always united across time, drawn to each other, that's why he becomes obsessed and why she wants him to stay: they've always been together, across space and time. Love your speculation, can't wait for you to get to season three :D
In the books and later on in the TV series there is talk about the protomolecule being able to "read" brainwaves.
Remember, Miller started seeing visions ofJulie right after she died. He even said to Naomi that he sees her as clearly as Naomi right in front of him and she says to him 'you belong with me' A line I missed the first time thru, but when Julie actually said it to him at the end it tied it all together. They shared a bond of some kind. The hints were subtle but they were all over the place. And WOW, did it every pay off!
@@Shawn_M Good point.
@@Shawn_M Also right before Julie dies in season 1 she has a vision of miller with the bird
I love how when Julie woke up she was gasping for breath in exactly the same way as when she died on that bathroom floor. It's like her consciousness resumed from the same instant.
The single most underrated TV show ever. Everybody does reactions to GoT or Walking Dead but when you see someone react to the Expanse it's like you're watching a moment in their lives.
I'll never forget when I first saw this scene, it's probably the best thing I've ever seen on TV. It completely blew me away.
My favorite small scene in this episode is Drummer flipping off Fred when he tells her to get him a cup of coffee... and at the end.... Drummer brings him coffee. She might be one of the best Tsundere characters in live TV.
When those strings swell up, my tears well up. It's pretty much Pavlovian at this point. Loved your reaction!
The musical scoring definitely adds to the scene.
As far as "reaction videos", this is perfection. Looking forward to your commentary after you recover.
It's proof that you don't have to turn it into a laugh fest & fill every nanosecond with "content".
@@allyourmoney Molly's reviews are like fine wine compared to, I don't know, Red Bull? :)
Red Bull & vodka. ;)
Miller's last conversation with Dawes makes sense now, doesn't it? When he'll have lost everything, he'll know his way home and it'll welcome him.
End of book 1 story; time for book 2 story. The build up this time will be similar to the first arc's. And, this may sound ridiculous, but it's only going to get bigger, better, weirder.
Yeah when I first saw these episodes, it was just amazing. Felt like it was some of the best scifi ever put on TV. And then... I continue watching season 2 and 3 and it kept hitting new highs. This show is just incredible.
It was handled better than the books, but that's because almost all of the development happened in the form of his thoughts and inner monologues slowly changing throughout the book. I totally see why it was so hard to adapt that kind of development into a tv series.
i wasnt as invested the first time i watched this show, by the end of season 3 i went back and watched it all again to absorb all that i had missed. now this scene gets me every time. even the music. its a good way to measure, if it gets you the first time, you have been paying attention to the depth of these characters.
Fun fact: Julie and Miller kissing wasn't in the script, it was an on-set improvisation by Florence Faivre (Julie)
I've read this several times, is there a making of or an interview about this ?
@@kaguario "And while there was no kiss written in the book, or in the script, while shooting “that just sort of came into the scene spontaneously. It wasn’t a planned moment, it just came out of the connection that Julie and Miller were feeling, that paid off when she said ‘you belong with me.’ That was just one of those moments that evolved into more than it was written. It felt right, so we leaned it that way.”
Source: www.indiewire.com/2017/02/the-expanse-season-2-episode-home-spoilers-thomas-jane-interview-1201785933/
@@kaguario in addition to that article, I distinctly remember seeing behind the scenes footage where they talked about it, maybe it got taken down when Syfy cancelled the show & Amazon bought it, because I just searched high and low and couldn't find it, but I know that I've seen footage of Thomas Jane and Florence faivre in the blue screen room where they filmed that scene
Ive seen this episode 10+ times now and it hits me the same every single time. For me it is literally the most beautiful moment to ever air in video form. Stunning.
This might be my favorite episode of The Expanse. Ever since Dawes points out that Miller's in love with Julie my reaction has always been more Huh? than anything else to the Julie Miller love story. Maybe it's handled better in the books, which I haven't read yet, but it never felt fully earned to me, but In the last like 20 minutes I go from having zero emotional investment in their story, to who the hell is cutting onions in here by the end. The episode just captures them beautifully, and it turns it into this really nice elegant story. Julie and Miller, together on Venus.
Pretty difficult to choose a favourite episode when they're all stellar. But it's certainly in the top 5 for sure. The other 4 top episodes are obviously season 3 episodes.
I think the kiss was a too much for the arc they had. It would have worked better if they had just kept it as a deep and personal relationship for Miller.
@@sverebom7069 It's said that the kiss wasn't in the script. Apparently Florence (Julie) just felt it was a good moment. They decided to keep it.
@@STR33TSofJUST1C3 Okay, interesting. I did not know that. Not the call that I would have made, but they probably thought that the kiss was necessary as the end point of this character arc.
I never thought about it before until I read this comment. It occurred to me that Venus represents romantic love and Eros represents physical love which makes for a nice juxtaposition. I wonder if that was intentional.
This is one of the best scenes I have ever watched on screen.
At last, a reaction video with a real reaction in in. Thank you.
This freakin' series got me with "The World is Saved by the Power of Love", literally my least favorite trope ever...
Everytime I watch this scene back someone starts cutting those damn onions again. But seriously the score to this scene, the visuals and the acting is on another level. For a show with a relatively small budget by today's standards, this scene was utterly beautiful in every sense of the word. When we see Julie and how scared she is, "I'm done fighting. I just want to go home", that wrecks me everytime.
I was expecting your to be sad in this episode. But I was surprised once I saw that it reduced you to tears. I was like "I thought I got over this lose but your crying is flooding those emotions back. Stop crying please stop...😭😭. MILLEEEEEER!"
If the producers are ever worried about continuing this series, they should watch this video. If you create beautiful things, expect beautiful reactions.
I really liked Miller he was my favorite. The show keeps getting better tho. :P
That kiss, you know? Was unscripted.
Yeah, she took the lead.
Really? :o Where was that stated? Is there a story behind it? Sounds like an interesting titbit.
@@aineomaille4332 I love me some interesting titbits.
Honestly , I don't think i would've had the kiss. Personally i feel like the writing leading to that point already told Miller's and Julie's connection. Where the kiss almost feels forced. It's basically the way i would've felt if Jyn and Cassian kissed at the end of Rogue One . I feel like displaying the physical act of what is already Being shown on a deeper more cerebral level is just kind of redundant. Either way it's one of the greatest scenes in all of Sci Fi . Its more of a subjective opinion on my end .
This episode. The role miller takes, his deep and sharp understanding along with the gang's - all of it is just incredible and amazing. And of course their final moment especially like wow Truly as said here, one of THE best scenes in sci-fi tv.
And such a good reaction video - thank you!
This was the end of the 1st book. That's why it's so epic. This show likes to throw what would normally be season finales right in the middle of the seasons.
End of the 1st book.
Too right! Thanks.
I love it how invested you are in the story. I usually don't watch reaction videos, but your reactions to and interpretations of the story make it special. Needless to say that you are once again on the right track with many things that you deduct from the story and all the details (but there is always a twist to it). I can't wait to see your reactions to the rest of season two and then season three.
Your reactions and emotions just took this episode (that I’ve watched numerous times) to a whole new level. Thank you
Thank you Molly for sharing your experience of this amazing episode of TV with us. Your genuine, heartfelt reactions are truly wonderful...your insights when you are ready will be worth waiting for. Thank you.
Miller dying in the arms of Julie is the most beautiful tv scene ever. Gets me every time. I hate the fact that he died because he was my favourite character but still... it makes so much sense he died that way.
I am crying too.
I am mostly surrounded by less sensitive people than myself, so you made me feel less alone.
Thank you. ❤️
You're the only reactor I've watched who's reacted the way I did to that scene. I had to pause afterward to process the beautifully tragic end of the Miller and Julie story.
Yes. That episode was thrilling, exciting and heartbreaking all together. Your reaction was amazing, just as it should be to every of human beings. But the most interesting thing is ahead. Great show. Take care.
Love is the strongest force in the universe.
It’s a great video Molly, not worry about the lack of elaborate comments, it was expected! What a pay off, wasn’t it - elating, mind-blowing and also heartbreaking. And to think they dared do this not even halfway into the season. This marks the end of the first novel, and it only gets better as the story’s scope widens, though episodes 204-205 remain classic and some of the best the series offered so far, certainly a big emotional high point. 206 is when Avasarala’s story begins in the books, what we’ve seen of her so far was a prequel (of a sort), to blend the two novels more seamlessly. A lot of really interesting things to come. I’m very much looking forward to your comments on the last two episodes, as well as the next one - I know you love politics and you have a very insightful comments, it will be really fun.
Hey, thank you so much for making these :)
The crew toasting Miller with a bottle of Ganymede gin - what a perfect ending , gets me every time.
My heart breaks for Julie throughout the whole two seasons. I am glad that in her very final moments she was not alone.
Miller man. Just a deeply good person, no matter what he pretends to himself or others. And one of the most emotional episode endings in all of TV. It feels like a season finale, but it's only halfway through. Absolutely beautiful scene between him and Julie, and hilarious moments between the Roci crew trading looks at each other of "what? are you serious?" as everyone does things a little out of character. But them toasting Miller's empty seat at the end... that did me in.
Get's me everytime, that scene Q.Q
Doors and corners, kid. RIP Miller.
Miller and Julie saved each other.
This was amazing! Things are about to get insane.
I just found your channel while i was looking for reactions on this scene, and i have to say, because i know this scene in and out i continually looked at you Molly, and i had EXACTLY the same reaction!
Very good vid, i look forward to see more so you are a subscriber richer!
Keep up the good work!!
At the end, when they all give a toast to Miller's seat...kills me. :(
I loved your reaction. Thank you for sharing.
I was crying too. This is one of my favorites scene of all the serie, maybe the most ;_;
Fred actually got Drummer to get him a cup of coffee at the end. :)
A very powerful episode for sure.
Great reaction! Now you have the second half of the season to get through. Stay tuned!
"now I'm a giant mess"
It's ok girl, it's ok ! That was a - b e a u t i f u l l - Ending to Miller Story !
Tell ya, episodes 4 and 5 season 2 of The Expanse is best and most extraordinary TV science fiction I have ever seen.
Though I don't think I was that saddened by it, the reaction was perfect. It's a bittersweet ending for Miller but he embraced it. Chrisjen's moment had been a bit sadder for me. The unspoken connection with her husband is amazing.
Don't worry I cried the second time watching it along with you. So sad...
ICREIEVERYTIEM
I loved somebody like that once. I hope I can again.
Apparently, the kiss scene was not in the original script and was the idea of the two actors.
I have watched through the entire series. I have come to hate myself for it.
There is way to long time until season 4 is released. I feel like Marvin in The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy..
So for your own psychological well-being, spread out the remaining episodes so that you do not have to suffer from this unbearable wait.
I am here enjoying your videos trying to keep my withdrawals at a survivable level..
great reaction!
Your comments earlier in the show about the significance of Miller talking with the Mormon about believing in something greater than himself, and how he hadn't had anything to believe in before Julie - that was so important, and something I missed on my first watch. You were very quick to notice it, and I feel like this episode has a huge payoff for that.
didn't know it was going to be a love story when it started did ya? good reaction
If you can take another very difficult SF story consider 1980's _Somewhere In Time_ with Christopher Reeves, Jane Seymour, and Christopher Plummer. Quite different but quite rewarding, it became a cult classic few have ever seen.
This scene wrecks me every time
That moment, when RUclips reactors just watch and do not talk (much) any more.
Well, she was reacting plenty without words.
You are now finished with book one

There is five minutes coming up this season that ripped out my heart.

🖤
Damn. Must be something in my eye.. Sniff. That episode gets me every time. Even watching it vicariously make me leak water everywhere.
Not a spoiler, just something to note, but again, I'm going to point out that Julie seemed to know stuff about Miller that she could not possibly have known. For example, when he says he was sent to find her, she replies with "Kidnap job" as if she is familiar with Miller's conversation with his boss at the start of the show. The bird as well. She never saw that bird. ~cue mysterious music~
I hadn't thought of that until you just said it. The bird was on Ceres... not Eros... How after all of the times I have watched these episodes did I not realize that? Uhg... Then again... Julie was living on Ceres for a time... she might have seen it... which gives added weight to it connecting them both. So many new things to see each time I view this show.
Not since Battlestar Gralactica has a science fiction show given up suck moving story's and put you right in the action. .I like the Expanse but BSG is still number one in my hart for TV.
How can I not love you?
Jesus Christ I shouldn't comment after smoking some cannabis.
this is the biggest mistake almost all a new baby youtubers make by thinking you need a 5000$ usdollars pro camera but the reality is that you do not and even a camera that films at a quality of 4k(ultra hd) is no more then 500$
Your problem and is a serious one so please take it seriosly is the small resolution of your videos --> 720p and the video is pixelated and hurts your eyes when watching a video of yours.
400$ laptop/notebook will have 1080P (full hd) camera and you can also have a new notebook/laptop OR 100$ dedicated photo camera has the ability to capture video at 1080p and highquality because it has dedicated lens and the quality will be better by a factor of 4x .
i told you before and i am telling you again as i see returning your videos and finding again that i can't watch them because it hurts my eyes and YOU ARE GOOD RUclipsRS and is a shame for people to go away because it hurt there eyes ---> please please go 1080p (fullHD) quality and i bet you wil have an increase of 10x number of subscribers as you are cool but not with 720p
i really hate i ca't watch you because you do not have 1080p
HD refers to image resolution of 720p (1280 X 720 pixels = approximately 1 million pixels)
Full HD stands for image resolution of 1080p (1920 X 1080 pixels = approximately 2 million pixels)
Ultra HD or 4K resolution (3840 X 2160 pixels = approximately 8 million pixels)
PLEASE PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS MATTER because there are soooooo many youtubers that are trash quality and U look to be special but the low resolution is killing you and please go 1080p resolution level
I had tears too when I watched this even if I knew it was coming having read the books before. This was an amazing episode and the boys and girls who wrote it did an astounding job. Acting. Scene. Music. Everything in that Miller-Julie scene is fantastic. It's probably one of the best episodes of the series and for sure the most emotionally intense up to now. It almost feels like a season finale and it's jut the middle of the season! To think that things are just gonna escalate even more from here just tells you how crazy this story is and how nicely it's portrayed on screen. Jeez I love this show.
Boy this episode hits ya right in the feels. The first time I saw this and Miller removed his helmet I'm saying to the TV "What the heck are you doing man?!" I kept holding out hope he'd get out alive.
I even had hope after he removed his helmet, because maybe Julie will let him live? But then you see spores go right up his nose...
@@SyntheticaYT Yep. That was pretty much when you had to accept the harsh reality.
When she says "they left me all alone" and later the team giving a toast to the absent miller, it's the Moments which get me by the balls.
I know! I really feel for Miller, but everyone talks about that. Julie's last moments were so heartbreaking, feeling abandoned, her body being used and abused by the mad scientists, and then having to accept that she can never go home.
Please don't cry, Molly. Seeing you cry made me cry with you! LOL
Don't worry, I've seen this episode 3 or 4 times now, and I still well up a bit every time. Seeing your face change, as the penny dropped about Miller's fate, was about as perfect as you could ask from a reaction video, and was so authentic. :)
I was well prepared for this glorious mid season finale with tons of tissues and they were needed. Well we've seen you understood this Miller/Mao story on all levels, you are so sensitive, it was just sad and beautiful, thanks, little elf.
Now that's what I call a genuine reaction , girl you deep in your feels ,virtual hug
Yeah, that's about the right reaction! Brings tears to my eyes every time I see that scene.
I also believe when Miller "Fed" Julie the nuke... I like to think by feeding her the energy... he gave her the strength to move eros… also just knowing she wasn't abandoned, wasn't alone. That one person cared and was willing to show her genuine compassion. She could do it.
Oh wow, I had never thought of it that way, that she could absorb the energy of the nuke. That's such an interesting idea.
That...actually makes a lot of sense. I had seen it as Miller giving her control of the nuke as an act of trust, which it was, but i'd never considered that he was also handing her a bunch of energy.
