  • At the eastern tip of Jejudo Island, there is an enormous and uniquely shaped geologic feature that formed as a result of a volcanic eruption. It is Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, a popular spot to watch the sunrise.
Unlike other tuff cones found on the island, Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak contains traces of volcanic activity, with layers of fine volcanic ashes that resulted when magma ejected from the seabed met the cold seawater. Behind Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, featuring a large crater and towering cliff, that blends beautifully with the picturesque seascape, there is tragic history, as it served as a secret base for the Japanese army during the occupation period and the site of the Jeju uprising, or the Jeju April 3 incident.
Many come here to pray for their loved ones to be happy and well, while watching the sunrise.
